ARCHIVED Costco
Emilushka replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We do use Costco. I get things like paper goods (paper towels, toilet paper), soaps (detergent, dish soap), dried mangoes, dried nuts, frozen stuff ... Also single-serve hummus containers. -
ARCHIVED Glutened
Emilushka replied to michayla's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I hear you. Just got over some major glutening last week ... took me almost a week to get over it! UGH. -
ARCHIVED Pots Pans And Dishes Sharing
Emilushka replied to revenant's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That's why I let my husband, who still eats gluten, use all the old non-stick pans I had from My Life Before and I use all his stainless steel pots and pans. Honestly, they're probably all scratched anyway. -

Normally I agree. This doc was wonderful though, and actually deserves the respect docs are sometimes automatically given. -

I honestly don't have one. I was warned by my GI doc about this. I never bothered to look because I heard from the doc and also from somewhere else on the web (don't remember where, but maybe this forum?) -

What kind of pots are they: stainless steel, nonstick, etc? The stainless steel can be cleaned effectively but nonstick retains gluten if it has ever been used to make a gluten-containing meal. For some reason the nonstick material binds gluten and permanently contaminates it. -
If she was looking at the center of your eye, she was looking at your pupil. Which is a hole. Without any gluten or gluten processing equipment in it.

ARCHIVED Glutened
Emilushka replied to michayla's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The antibodies bind to the gluten at the intestinal wall and cause an inflammatory attack on the intestines. It doesn't undo EVERYTHING but it does cause temporary damage again. Especially after having gone gluten-free again for a while, the difference between being healthy and having your intestines inflamed can be quite dramatic. Exactly how symptomatic... -
ARCHIVED Coffee
Emilushka replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Maxwell House ground coffee without a problem. -
I know what you mean ... and yes, there are way too many Dr. X-style docs out there. I understand that patients who have had a terrible experience or set of experiences would feel betrayed, neglected, angry, frustrated, etc. And I try to validate these patients when I see them as a medical professional. What I really ask of ANY patient is to please treat...

I find that it's easiest to eat at either fast food restaurants (because they just have to change gloves and make you food without a bun) or really nice restaurants. Some family-owned places that specialize in cuisines naturally lower in gluten are good, like Lebanese or Thai food, for example, but I think those are spottier. The really swanky places charge...

I'm suggesting the next step is to keep your appointment with your GI doc in January. Honestly, without seeing all your medical info, I'm not qualified to tell you what to do. And I wouldn't want to overstep your doc, who's been taking care of you and knows what has gone on already. -
At the best places, the waiter will automatically have the manager come talk to you and make sure that the food is prepared correctly (and guide your menu choices so you know what's safe and what's not). But at some places the waitstaff understand enough that you don't need to bother with that. A great way to check is to ask if something you know isn't...
-
Yeah ... I hope so. I know the tendency to believe records instead of the patient, but a good doc will read the records, see if those diagnoses are justified by testing, and then talk to the patient and try to get the full story again from the patient's perspective. Info gets lost if you don't do ALL of those things. But the best patients are the ones...

ARCHIVED I Want A Big Mac Or Taco Supremes Now!
Emilushka replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Goodness. You are so right. I ... need to learn which fast food joint I am eating in and what their signature burger is! Sheesh. The mayo at Burger King is gluten-free. I've checked that and eaten there many times without being glutened. The key thing is to double-check the fry oil and ask them to change gloves before making your order. They've always... -
One of the biggest things I've learned in medical school is that people can really be wonderful and people can really, truly suck. It goes both ways. And that means docs, patients, family members, nurses, techs, janitors, clerks, translators, lab employees, everybody.

Whopper sauce does have gluten. See this list for McD's specifically. Open Original Shared Link -

You can eat a lot of fast food ... just not the buns! Check the allergen lists. We went to Burger King today, in fact. I had a tasty Whopper with 2 slices of bacon and fries. Horrible for me and super tasty! -
They go well with mushrooms, garlic, tomatoes, carrots, corn ... those are just the sorts of things I've tried. I tend to like to steam bags of frozen mixed veggies (you can find more interesting mixes). Maybe try using veggie broth or chicken broth or beef broth as a base for a sauce, adding flavors as you prefer? You could thicken with corn starch or with...

I'm 6 months away from being a doctor myself. There are drug company drone doctors, but my point is that the OP's doc just sounds like an idiot, not one of the drones. But you're right in that the American public is really messed up in their expectations for what they want. People think that medical testing and procedures and medications are like menu...
-
Well, yeah. But you can't give drugs until you eliminate the gluten entirely. Steroids are also not terribly lucrative. Psych drugs and antibiotics and heart drugs are much better money-makers. Also Viagra.

ARCHIVED Lipase High/lesion-Cyst On Liver
Emilushka replied to twe0708's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
"Hypervascularity" means a bunch of blood vessels. It's actually not uncommon to get that kind of thing in the liver without it being a problem and without there being any symptoms at all. If the doc is seeing what I'm pretty sure they're seeing, this is called a "hemangioma" ("hem" for blood and "angi" for vessels and "oma" for mass). It's not a tumor. The... -
Honestly, sometimes they're just idiots. Celiac's not a good drug company diagnosis ... he'd probably go with IBS and start pushing meds if he were a drug company drone. But having seen some of the people who become doctors, they are sometimes just idiots. Plain, ordinary, should-have-stayed-home-instead-of-going-to-medical-school idiots.
