  1. The version I heard was about the way MSG is manufactured. I heard that was the problem. Nothing more specific, though.
  2. Oh, I know MSG triggers migraines and can cause all kinds of reactions on its own. I realize it's not a healthy thing to eat. I just thought (incorrectly!) that it was a celiac thing. Thanks for the clarification! That's really helpful. That and maltodextrin are two things this site has let me eat again. HUZZAH!
  3. Casein intolerance has more variance from person to person, but lactose intolerance is pretty uniform. Lactose intolerance means that the bacteria in the gut digest the lactose sugar, which makes them happy - this leads to a lot of gas production, because that's what bacteria do with sugar. The gas causes bloating and diarrhea. That's pretty classic. Usually...
  4. Where did the worry about MSG originally start? Do you guys know? I had thought it was a problem.
  5. Yeah ... I share water bottles occasionally with my gluten-eating fiance. Never had a problem from that yet. I also kiss him, which is probably a much higher risk of CC.
  6. Agreed. I just finished writing a letter to the district manager of the company that owns the restaurant that treated me really well despite having to make up menu items for me. If someone does treat you well, remember to get them the recognition they deserve and lots of positive feedback so that they know they did well and will do well again later. People...
  7. I thought it was more like a vast majority are lactose intolerant because Celiac damages the cells right where the lactase enzyme is made and utilized ... Casein intolerance is a bigger deal.
  8. To be REALLY fair, medicine as we know it is a baby science that everyone expects us to have perfected already. Unsurprisingly, we haven't. We haven't even had antibiotics for that long, let alone understood the way cancer works. We still don't entirely understand cancer, HIV, and many other huge world-wide killers that are naturally taking research funding...
  9. Toledo, Ohio in the USA.
  10. Last night, despite my gluten-free, dairy-free diet, I ate out at an Italian restaurant. I had to for work. It wouldn't have been my choice of restaurant at all! Can you believe that? A REAL ITALIAN RESTAURANT. Not a chain like Olive Garden - this is a scratch kitchen (they cook everything from scratch) and they have gluten-free rice pasta on hand for...
  11. Well, it is different from a food allergy, but your friend was still a jerk. When I have friends that behave inappropriately as yours did, I question how long I care about our friendship being open and honest and close. If they're moving away soon (as with a friend who made a very callous comment recently) I just let it go and move on with life. I'll be rid...
  12. As soon as they said Candida (yeast) is a bacterium, I stopped reading. Candida is a yeast, which is a different type of animal than a bacterium! Anyone with a 100-level bio course in their background would know that. The fact that this article made that mistake, and I only needed to read for 30 seconds in order to catch that, is a glaring enough error that...
  13. Palm oil should be OK for now. If you find that you are still having problems, you can always go back to your usual brand with only almonds in it and try eliminating it entirely. I don't know of palm oil as a major irritant or food allergy or reacting substance, though. Good luck with your diet. It's hard, but I really hope you get good answers.
  14. That's exactly what I do! I have that Earth Balance stuff ... I actually really like it, and it melts really well like natural butter. It's tasty, and I can add salt and flavorings however I like. I probably make it into a really unhealthy snack (I love my "butter" by the half-cup rather than by the tablespoon ... )
  15. We just gave in and bought an air popper for the popcorn. When you make it from scratch, you know exactly what goes in it. But that's mostly because I'm gluten-free/CF ... it's hard to find dairy-free microwave popcorn, and it's insanely expensive. The air popper was only $20 or so.
  16. You're correct. I haven't personally tried McD's, but I have tried Burger King and Wendy's and they are both OK if they have a dedicated fryer. The busier locations tend to have dedicated fryers, whereas slower business leads to sharing oil. Keep in mind I'm not the most sensitive Celiac out there, but I'm also not the most insensitive. So be careful with...
  17. You have to ask at each fast food location. The key question: do you have a dedicated fryer for only the fries, or is the oil used for breaded chicken or onion rings? The onion rings are the most likely contaminant. If they use the fryer and the oil for only the french fries, I know McDonald's, Wendy's, and Burger King fries are all gluten-free. The key...
  18. They aren't totally gone - they're just flat, which means that your cells have to rebuild the structures from scratch. They will, but it'll take a significant length of time. The cells are made at the bottom of the heap, then are pushed upward and into the villous structure by new cells formed beneath them (very similar to the way skin is formed, actually...
  19. To be more clinical about it, allergies (and antihistamines and anti-allergy medications) work on IgE antibodies and mast cells. These are the parts of the immune system that react to an allergen. They are pre-formed antibodies that combine with the mast cells to release histamine (hence the name of the antihistamine drug family) and trigger the allergic...
  20. There shouldn't be any interaction. It's a different part of the immune system.
  21. It could have been problematic that you were off gluten for the month before getting the test ... what test exactly are you talking about?
  22. For some folks, it does. Sounds like it's time to go gluten-free with everything that touches your body!
  23. To the best of my knowledge, there's no known link between Celiac and urinary tract problems. But that doesn't mean you can't have both!
  24. So I'd probably be safe if I just asked them to not stir the coffee?
  25. I'm living gluten-free while on loans (still in school) and my biggest advice is to cook for yourself. Try to get the kids into quinoa, since that's a great nutrient source. Canned tuna and dried beans are both quite cheap, and hamburgers in lettuce wraps or nachos with beans and beef could be a fun treat for the kiddos. Crockpot cooking will be your friend...
