ARCHIVED Newly Gluten Free With ?'s
julie5914 replied to AshleyE's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wait, are they itchy? If not, do they look about as far apart as your hair follicles? Look up keratosis pilaris (chicken skin- nice nickname, huh). It doesn't itch, just looks funny and affects about 50% of people. I use a body scrub and a strong glycolic acid lotion I get from the derm to keep mine at bay. P.S. I still avoid topical things with gluten... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Shingles (herpes Zoster)
julie5914 replied to hutmacar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's probably common. I never had the rash (DH), but I can imagine that a regular doctor would assume shingles. A biopsy can be done to confirm it is DH. Valtrex can help if it is shingles. I actually just got my first herpes simplex (cold sore) outbreak in the last couple of weeks and was so embarassed to have to take Valtrex. That rash on my lips was horrible... -
ARCHIVED I Need Some Advice Badly!
julie5914 replied to mommy2ky's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I couldn't find where you said if you had been tested for diabetes (probably type 1 because of the autoimmune trouble you have). Have you ruled that out? Please do if not. Pregnancy and giving birth most certainly sets this autoimmune stuff off for a lot of people (at least from what I have read and what my mom has experienced.) Perhaps you could also do... -
WARNING - if you get the Red Curry (or anything else with rice) at Doc Chey's - get white rice. Their brown rice contains gluten. I learned this the hard way.

I am almost sure the one in Atlanta is ok too, but be sure you ask (post back if they say it's not so I can grill my people again. I hadn't seen the gluten-free markers at EarthFare! That's great - I will have to go back. I am always in the store, thinking, why don't they just put all the gluten-free stuff together. That would make sense. If someone is just...

HOw long have you been gluten-free? I started really feeling better after about 8 months on the diet, and I gave up dairy 6 months in. Could be intolerance to something else, could be accidental something or other (I never know). Could be stress. It affects your gut no doubt. For some reason I can't potty when traveling. It's crazy, like I don't want to leave...

'Lo - I'm in Athens as well - I work downtown and will second Last Resort. Porterhouse is also very accomodating, as is Doc Cheys - the Red Curry there is gluten and casein free (and delicious). I shop at Kroger - they have just about all the things I need from Earth Fare except the occasional Nanas cookie and Risotto. East West can be tricky because they...

I just a Reader's Digest in the mail that talks about 7 deadly foods. It is about the 7 major allergies. I was glad that in a little box on intolerances they mentioned celiac as a serious disease, but they then downplayed intolerances as a whole, which I was a little disappointed with. It is definitely better than anaphylactic shock, but it can still destroy...

ARCHIVED Dh From Shampoo? Food? Eczema Or Burning Pimples?
julie5914 replied to Ksmith's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I have 2 on my back as well, and I came here looking for the same. Is it DH? Mine don't really itch though. I got one on my nose, and had some strange blisters on my lip. They weren't outside my lip like a cold sore, and they weren't inside my lip like a canker sore, they were just right on my lip, more clear than red. The ones on my back hurt deep though... -
ARCHIVED Supplements - Please Help
julie5914 replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My doctor recommended Jarrow formula bifidus and prescribed an enzyme called Creon to help me digest protein. -
ARCHIVED Pain, But Not Gluten
julie5914 replied to sspitzer5's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I get that too. I think mine is either acid or a medication I've taken (like if I take some cold meds that have ibuprofen). Feels like something is cutting into my stomach. -
ARCHIVED Looking For Advice On Symptoms
julie5914 replied to happygirl38's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sounds just like me before diagnosis (except I wish I were 120). You need to be on gluten to be tested if you want to be tested. If you do want to be tested, I would just be real straight-foward and firm about it. "I want the blood test for Celiac." Decide from there if you want endoscopy. -
ARCHIVED Help, I Have My Blood Test Results!
julie5914 replied to Aquina1300's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'd get an endoscopy. With inconclusive blood results (one positive and one negative), I would want to know for sure. It could be something else, in which case you don't want to stop looking here. -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Questions
julie5914 replied to mwilliams34's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, those are the right test, and they pretty much mean you do not have celiac. It is certainly possible to be intolerant to wheat and a whole slew of other things and not have celiac. I would do an elimination diet for wheat first - stay completely off it for a few weeks then try it back. If that doesn't do it, try it with milk - it sounds like it could... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
julie5914 replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is the first topic I've ever seen get to 29 pages! Congrats! The main topic question is one I've asked myself since I started this diet. I read somewhere that as little as 1/48th of a slice of bread can cause a reaction, so I don't like stuff to touch. I wash pots in between, but I don't have my own pots or silverware. I don't use gloves or wipe... -
ARCHIVED My Iron Levels Are Very Low And Dr. Is Not Helping
julie5914 replied to Carolita's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had different labs than you did. When they tested I had a hemoglobin of 10 (should be 12-13) and a hemotocrit of 30 (min is 37). I felt worse after that before getting better. It took several months to get the blood levels up on prescription iron pills. I took them before bed so I could sleep through most of the discomfort. After about 4 months gluten free... -
ARCHIVED My Iron Levels Are Very Low And Dr. Is Not Helping
julie5914 replied to Carolita's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
How long have you been gluten free and taking the iron pills? I had low iron too when I was diagnosed. The iron pills didn't work well with me either, and that combined with the anemia was making me feel like crap. After several months gluten free though, I could move from the iron pills to just plain multi-vitamins. My iron has never been higher (and I took... -
Yeah, it's not supposed to float (but mine almost always do *blush*). My husband is appalled that go 3-4 times a day. He also has gotten used to talking about it. He will gloat that his are well formed and sinking, and I will tell him I am jealous.

ARCHIVED Doctors Vs. Pharmaceutical Companies
julie5914 replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Doctors
Well, I'll admit, I'm lazy and I haven't read all of the posts above. I think it's worthwhile to do petitions or something to pharm companies to let them know how many people there are who would love a pill. If they know it will sell they might raise the priority on it. I personally think it is more likely that a university would find something like this... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Or Not Celiac?
julie5914 replied to Smitten's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Interesting that your blood work would be normal and the biopsy abnormal. I would want to know what they tested in bloodwork, i.e., did they do the full panel. I had very pos. bloodwork, no endoscopy. My sister had inconclusive bloodwork and she only knows that they said the endoscopy saw that her intestines were inflamed. They never said celiac. So she is... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test-which Number Is Most Important?
julie5914 replied to erin24's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah, I think serum IgA is total IgA - they do the test to see if you are low, which would make some of the other readings low. Without the ref range, though, it doesn't mean anything - you would have to look at the results. They will flag results that are out of range. I would say that the Ttg and the anit-endomysial numbers are the most important. If these... -
ARCHIVED Antibiotics...?
julie5914 replied to Moongirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think we all need probiotics personally, whether we're on antibiotics or not! -
ARCHIVED Getting Sick Easier Since gluten-free
julie5914 replied to rache's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
rache, have you tried cutting dairy for a couple of weeks? Dairy allergies can cause digestive upset along with respiratory problems. I was sick a lot before dx. Since dx I have not been sick yet. I take vitamins (and probiotics when I remember). I took Zelnorm before dx when I still thought it was IBS - the only thing it really helped with was going to the... -
ARCHIVED Follow-up Doctor's Visit
julie5914 replied to jackie4's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sounds like you have a good doc if you have a list of those things I think ask any questions about the diet, but most importantly, explain the bad days to the doctor and tell him or her how often they are. I had lots of bad days still in the beginning. The more info you can give them, the better. You could form it as a question like "Is it normal that... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosis.....
julie5914 replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The breath test showed the presence of h pylori for me. I had the blood test a month after treatment, and it came back normal. I tolerated the antibiotic/acid reducers treatment well - felt much better for those 2 weeks but then went back to feeling bad because I was still eating gluten at the time. I didn't gain or lose weight on the h. pylori treatment...
