I'd like some more experienced Celiacs to weigh in, but I have never heard of anyone ever saying that coffee causes a reaction in Celiacs. From what I read, the author is saying that people react to the protein in coffee the same way that they would react to gluten, causing an auto-immune response. Again, I didn't see any real scientific information...

Open Original Shared Link I don't know about this one. An article by someone who went to a paleo diet conference and heard something from a company that will sell you blood tests. The whole thing sounds pretty sketchy with not much sound scientific information. Also, I don't think it's a good idea to identify your expert as a "functional neurologist...

Very likely an issue from cross-contamination. Although a bunch of greasy wings can have a serious impact on even the most resilient digestive track.

This post title is two commas short of being a little disturbing. -

ARCHIVED I Plan On Opening A Gluten Free Restaurant
Menic replied to NewGlutenFreeChef's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Yeah, if you find a good meat pie or pasty recipe, be sure and share it. Another suggestion: All the stuff that's deep fried but usually gets cross-contaminated. You could offer burgers or corn dogs with onion rings, hot wings or fried chicken. Basically all those comfort foods. Even little sliders on Gluten-free buns would be cool. -

Not pringles, and some BBQ flavors (Lays, for example) are not safe. -

This is an old thread, but both Marcello's and JJ Twigs offer good gluten-free pizza and have locations around Chicago. -
I noticed a sticker on my order the last time I went there carrying their disclaimer. It sounded like a laywer CYA thing to me. As with all restaurants, you have to feel that they know what they are doing to eat there. Personally, I'd be happy if they just said, "We will do our best, but cannot 100% guarantee yada yada" if they need that sort of thing for...

ARCHIVED Why Gluten-Free Diets Are Not Welcome Chez Martha Stewart
Menic replied to sa1937's topic in Publications & Publicity
"How's my homemade tea, Martha? I'm glad you like it. I like to add a touch of poison ivy to give it that nice coloring, but don't worry, I'm not allergic to poison ivy." -

Schar makes a really good one, if you can find it. -
Welcome to the boards, I was diagnosed at 31 as well, so I can relate.

I recommend The Gluten-Free Bible by Jax Peters Lowell. It contains personal stories, tips, recipes, and is generally a good read. -
I finally did make it to the Deerfield location. The server was very familiar with the menu and did offer to bring me Gluten-free bread. It was just the pizza crust turned into garlic bread, but still pretty tasty. They had about 15 entrees on the Gluten-free menu, and most were full entrees, not just the "hamburger without bun" type menu substitutions...

ARCHIVED Sub Folders For Meeting Room/support Groups
Menic posted a topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
I was wondering if it made sense to add subfolders to either the meeting room or support group folders that designate countries/states/regions etc. It seems to me that I see a lot of "Anyone here from XXX?" posts, and then they slowly get pushed to the back pages. If there were sub folders, a person could, as an example, click the U.S. sub folder, then... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Miss?
Menic replied to celiacchef's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Besides all of the above: Sushi - I'd like to be able to get a california roll and a shrimp tempura roll at a restaurant or at the grocery. I know I can make it all myself, but sometimes you just want it done for you. I'm also not that big a fan of nigiri. Good bread - I worked in a french bakery for 6 years before being diagnosed. So I'm a little... -
I think this varies a lot depending where in the healing process you are. A lot of people feel they are much more sensitive to small amounts after they have been gluten free for a while. From personal experience, CC in the first few months left me feeling bloated and having tummy issues, while today it causes me to be pretty sick with much worse symptoms...

ARCHIVED Favorite gluten-free Crackers?
Menic replied to WinterSong's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Link They are great for cheese spreads, dips, or anything you'd want to put on a cracker. -
While driving across the midwest/east on vacation this summer, I actually wound up getting Outback carry out twice, simply because I knew they had a separate gluten-free menu and were on their game. They're one of the better chains of mid-level dining across the country. I've been impressed.

ARCHIVED Possible Glutening By Lay's Chips?
Menic replied to glutenfreeinminnesota's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Be careful, as the Lays Barbeque and Flamin' Hot flavors do contain barley malt. They are technically wheat-free, so that doesn't stand out as one of the 8 allergy items listed at the bottom. They do say that they clean their lines between batches, yada yada. I've never had a problem with Lays, myself. -
I'd worry more about CC at taco bell than the actual ingredients. Who knows who touched what in there.

ARCHIVED Making Fun Of Gluten Issues On New Cbs Show
Menic replied to Kate79's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think the real reason to be upset with CBS's portayal here is that it reinforces the stereotype that people just choose to pick up the gluten-free diet for whatever reason, be it as a fad or a coverup for an eating disorder. It's these kinds of things that reinforce in the public's minds that gluten-free doesn't have to be taken seriously. If the joke... -
