  1. Yes, that is very common. I have DH and I am one year gluten free and I still have 4 sores that flare from time to time. For DH some people have to avoid not only gluten but iodine also. It has been found that iodine can keep the antibodies active in the skin causing eruptions even when one is gluten free. Iodine is found in iodized table salt, you can use...
  2. Peter Green wrote Celiac A Hidden Epidemic and in it he says DH patients often test negative for Celiac, however they are often the most sensitive to cross contamination and have a higher incidence of lymphomas and other cancers secondary to Celiac. I wouldn't believe your Dr. on that one. A negative blood test does not mean you don't have Celiac. A diagnosis...
  3. There is a list on the home page of gluten free wine and spirits. /celiac-disease/gluten-free-alcoholic-beverages-r218/
  4. I'm not sure how long it lasts. Mine varied month to month but then of course I was making a lot of newbie mistakes and getting CC until I figured it all out. I stopped eating out and only cooked my own food. That was the best help I gave myself. I was sometimes frustrated about being tired and thought I should be feeling better by now. But then I would remind...
  5. Welcome! At my sickest I had to crawl up the stairs in our home, and I always bumped into walls or worse, people while simply trying to walk across the room. It was awful. I cannot believe gluten could have caused all of that and I don't want to give you false hope in case you have something else neurological going on...but I can't help but relate to you...
  6. My son was off the top of the growth charts all his life. He started having leg pain and growing pains at age 7. He had asthma since age 2. He started walking with a stumbling slow gait at age 8 but mentally he was very bright and made good grades...when he turned his work in. He couldn't exercise...leg pain...I asked Dr.'s to test him for something since...
  7. For several years I slept as if I were in the twilight zone...Woke up stumbled to the bathroom then to the kitchen to eat some toast and tea and then back to bed. I had no idea what was wrong with me....absolutely no energy and at one point I felt like I was going into a coma...I slept 24 hours and didn't know what day it was. None of this happens to me now...
  8. Your "baby villi" will recover....just be nice to them and they will reward you with recovery of your energy, health, and painting too! It just takes a little time and due diligence. They are very forgiving little guys. They seem to grow back readily once gluten is stopped.
  9. Your older son might benefit from giving up gluten as well. There is a lot of information on the internet about Gluten and Casein free diets for Autism. You might consider trying this for your older son, then gluteny McDonalds wouldn't be an issue for any of you. As far as treatment, there is no treatment other than maintaining a gluten free diet for...
  10. Yeah, you are the Mama and you get to decide what the kids eat regardless of what the Dr.'s want to test for or do not want to test for. I couldn't get a Dr. to support my suspicion that my son's asthma might be related to Celiac. They said it wasn't a common symptom and my child was over not under weight. However, all of his symptoms went away when I eliminated...
  11. I had to deal with the puffy face for many months even after going gluten free. Some days I looked fine but most puffy. There are histamine foods which turned out to be significant for me. If I don't eat histamine containing foods I am not swollen and puffy. If I eat any of I get a reaction that ranges from puffy and swollen to itchy and skin rash. Some...
  12. If you read you will realize there are thousands of people giving up gluten and grains for health reasons and they are empowered by their decisions. Maybe if you looked at it as a personal decision instead of a disease it might help. You could think of it as Paleo eaters do as an empowering personal choice instead of constantly thinking of it as Celiac disease...
  13. That is wonderful news!! And as one who doesn't react severely to gluten, your perseverance has really taken some strength and it has really been amazing! The way you accepted the diagnosis and dove right in to the positive side of gluten free cooking and baking has been inspiring to me. I loved how you wrote that your passion was baking and you weren't...
  14. With the itching and lip tingling swelling it sounds like a histamine response more than a gluten reaction to me. You are fairly new in the recovery process so you will have to learn about all the ways of being cross-contaminated and where trace gluten can hide. But sometimes there is something else going on, and as Celiacs, we are prone to secondary intolerances...
  15. Sounds like you are on a good path to fiuring it all out. I do not know if Fibromylagia is genetic. I was just misdiagnosed with Fibromyalgia...it turns out I do not have it at all. All my fatigue and muscke bone joint pain and depression and anxiety were caused entirely by gluten. Getting rid of gluten resolved all of the physical and mental problems...
  16. I've never had a reaction last that long, but I have read of people who have had reactions last for weeks. You might want to consider secondary food intolerances or allergies. Sometimes after you heal then your body starts to react to other foods. Common ones are dairy, soy, corn, less common but still significant for those effected by them are nightshades...
  17. What anti-inflammatories are you taking? Just thoughts here... If you are taking advil or Ibuprofen...and you are sensitive to salicylates it can interefere with your metabolism over long periods of time. You may not know you are sensitive to salicylates without elimination and challenge. There is no test for it. My feet hurt terribly prior to diagnosis...
  18. Where is Peter...he loves stuff like this...
  19. Yes it is!!
  20. Welcome Home! And I mean that! This has been a place where I learned about a disease that has been eating my body up for 48 years. You haven't disrespected anyone here. Nor yourself.Sometimes we have to figure things out the hard way. It's not too late. Never too late. Goodness knows I would like to change a lot of the last years I was constantly Gluten...
  21. Aww Hadrian, Thanks for your post. I would give you a hug if I could. I'm a mom of a kid that went through a lot with undiagnosed Celiac disease. I was too tired, sick, fatigued, headache ridden, depressed and anxious to figure out that what was consuming me was also consuming my son. I am very intrigued by your post because there were early symptoms...
  22. You are a sweetheart to do that for your sis and grammy! And you said flawless?! I won't expect flawless for me as I have DH scars to cover. But gluten free make-up foundation and lipstick were on my Gluten Free Bucket List!! Thank you so much for posting your finding! I will try them!
  23. I am 11 months gluten free and due to a continuing skin rash/hives, I am now on a Low Histamine diet...I also am senstive to Salicylates. If this is your problem, then high histamine foods may be making you feel awful. It seems to be working for me. But I've only just learned about the Histamine content of foods, and the hives can be auto-immune OR Allergic...
  24. Fedupwithfoodadditives.com is an excellent site. You may find he is allergic or intolerant to other foods too...like salicylates...and that would then add in yellow food coloring, tartrazine, annatto, and the benzoates which are in almost all carbonated flavored pop and in some juices too. My son and I have Celiac/Gluten Intolerance in addition to the...
  25. If you have been gluten free for a long period of time, the antibodies die down. That is what we want to have happen and that is what DOES happen when you are successfully gluten free for a long time. That could explain your lack of reaction to ingesting a large amount of gluten. But don't underestimate this Beast called Celiac. If you are, and you keep eating...
