ARCHIVED Can Shampoo Contribute?
ianm replied to janu's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I find that a shampoo with gluten in it will make my scalp itch but nothing more serious than that. -
ARCHIVED Coping With Co-workers Attitude While Dining Out
ianm replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I explain that it is an allergy that disrupts the immune system and destroys the lining of the small intestine. It is not an allergy that will cause me to go into shock or drop dead but it is detrimental to my health. Usually they want to know more or have at least heard of it. For the idiots that usually shuts them up. -
I completely agree with that Sally.

ARCHIVED Are There Any Other Celiacs That Are Overweight?
ianm replied to Jules's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I used to be about 80lbs overweight before gluten-free. I have to really watch the carbs and the portions of what I eat. I also have to exercise regularly. I gain weight really easy so I stay away from the gluten-free breads and pastas because they have too much carbs and less fiber. Plus they cost too much and don't taste that great. No sugary foods either... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms That Go Away
ianm replied to Lesliean's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Extreme fatigue, brain fog (by far the worst of the symptoms), ringing ears, sporadic gut problems, dry mouth, seasonal allergies, circles under eyes, being overweight, pre-diabetes condition, high blood pressure. My "female problems" went away when I got divorced. -
I used to be chronically tired but could only sleep a few hours at a time. I never felt rested. After I went gluten-free I was able to sleep normally. Regular exercise helps a great deal. If I am not able to exercise then I start having trouble sleeping. I used to have ringing in my ears but that too has gone away.

Just before I went gluten-free I was on the verge of full blown type II diabetes. Now there is no diabetes anywhere in sight for me. Diabetes, lactose intolerance and intestinal cancer are all signs of celiac. Since celiac is a genetic disease it is a good bet your dad had it too. Following the diet is not hard and is actually fun. I now eat foods that I...

I used to get severe heartburn and acid reflux. Since going gluten-free I don't get that anymore. Acid reflux and heartburn is basically caused by eating junk. Since I can't eat that anymore the problem is gone.

It may take a while longer before you feel better. It took a lifetime to get sick so getting better won't happen overnight. I started feeling better after 3 months but it was a good year before I felt truly healthy. Double check again to see if you aren't getting gluten. Maybe you are also reacting to some other food.

Sounds like you got lucky and found a good doctor. All of the problems you listed are related to celiac. Read everything on this website to learn all you can. Ask as many questions as you can think of. We are here to help. This is the first step to a MUCH better life.

ARCHIVED How Do You Get Celiac
ianm replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A pill or an immunization for this disease is just not the way to go. It is much better to live a healthy lifestyle. A drug just so I can eat crap is just plain wrong. At the risk of sounding like a consipiracy theorist a drug to cure this disease is not going to do you any good. All it will do is cover up the symptoms not treat the source of the disease... -
It is and it isn't. If you really do then you are going to make some lifestyle changes and they will be for the better. You did not list any symptoms that led your DR to believe you have celiac. For me I was forced to live a much healthier lifestyle and my life is drastically better now than it was over a year ago. This disease is not the end of the world...

ARCHIVED Could I Be Celiac? Please Help
ianm replied to blue102's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had many of the problems you just described before going gluten-free. I had VERY low energy and could not focus on anything for any length of time. I had very severe social difficulties. It was difficult for me to speak, put two sentences together and engage in a coherent conversation. In the time that I have been gluten-free all of that has gone. I have... -
ARCHIVED Some Rather Graphic Bm Discussion Follows
ianm replied to Wandering Hermit's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Christicrete, The Atkins diet has worked wonders for me. The only time grain is allowed in the Atkins diet is in the final maintenance stage and only in very small quantities. I follow the diet to the letter except for grains of course. Sounds to me like you should go back on the Atkins diet. When you started eating more carbs what kind of carbs were you... -
I have to travel for work fairly often and can't say I have had too many bad experiences. Denny's has always been a good place. I usually get their big salads and they always substitute something else for the bread that comes with it. Plus they're cheap and the boss doesn't complain too much about it . TGIFridays has an Atkins menu, the foods not that great...

ARCHIVED Some Rather Graphic Bm Discussion Follows
ianm replied to Wandering Hermit's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I read somewhere once that floating stools indicate you are eating a lot of fiber. These discussions just get more gripping everyday . -
celiac3270, pay close attention to this thread, it will come in handy in a few years.

ARCHIVED New To Forum
ianm replied to gluteninva's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't eat any processed foods. I only eat meat, veggies, nuts, cheese, yogurt and fruit and have really developed a taste for buckwheat. After being on a gluten-free, low carb diet I found that I eat far less than I used to and ended up losing 80lbs. I was on the verge of diabetes. I've tried the processed gluten-free stuff, didn't like it so I just eat... -
Maybe we can fix him up with my ex-wife.
-
Well thats one wrong answer from your doctor . If you are gluten intolerant that means NO gluten ever again . I'm hoping by once in a while he means an accidental ingestion of gluten which is unfortunatley unavoidable.
-
Kaiti, your would-be suitor sounds like my ex-wife . Trust me you DON"T want someone who can't remember what your health condition is after you've explained it 20 times.
-
It's a good sign that your family doctor even has a clue about celiac and gluten-free diets, most doctors don't. Let us know more about what your doctor has to say and we'll be able to tell if he is any good. We've been to so many and some of us have good ones. Unfortunatley I happened to have found all of the idiot ones. Keep reading this website and you...

ARCHIVED Yet Another Newly Diagnosed Celiac
ianm replied to Wandering Hermit's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Pharmer, This isn't the end of the world. You will feel much better on a gluten-free diet. It will take time but it is worth it. Eventually you will get used to the restrictions and you won't think much of it. Yes there are a lot of foods you can't eat but there are so many new things that I would never have tried otherwise so it really kind of evens out... -
ARCHIVED Yet Another Newly Diagnosed Celiac
ianm replied to Wandering Hermit's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
They're labeling it trendy because there is no cure that requires a prescription. The only thing you can do is to change your diet and live a healthy lifestyle. Because they can't write a prescription(s) they won't be getting a kickback. -
ARCHIVED Degrees Of Gluten Intolerance?
ianm replied to scoutfinch's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't eat any processed foods, just meat, veggies, fruit and stuff like buckwheat and the gluten free type of grains. Even when I have to travel I stick with those kinds of foods. I don't know how possible that is in the UK but I have had few problems in the US.
