  1. Bad news. After reading about the lentils I checked the bag that I bought from Kroger and found some kernels of grain in it. I went to Trader Joe
  2. My son (age 9) has a friend with a very severe case of celiac disease and he has to bring his own cake and food to parties. The kids don't give it a second thought and are suprisingly supportive of this boy's condition. It is the occaisional idiot parent that causes the problem. The kids will yell at the doofus adult that this boy can't eat wheat and it will...

    ARCHIVED Scare Tactics

In my experience the only thing taught in med school anymore is how to write prescriptions. I was able to turn my life around without the help of a doctor. I had to research this disease on my own and this website has been a tremendous resource also. If you're PO'd at us then why are you here? I know a number of people who have had serious medical problems...
  4. Prior to going gluten-free the palms of my hands and the bottom of my feet would itch a lot. They used to sweat a lot also. Now that doesn't seem to be the problem it used to be. Forgot all about that one until you posted the question. Dairy doesn't seem to be too much of a problem for me. I don't drink milk though. The lactose seems to cause gas and stomach...
  5. I can't do any real strenuous exercise. I do a lot of walking and bike riding. Also some weight training, not body building, to keep muscle tone. Working on a six pack but at 37 I'm not so sure that will happen but I can still try. Running is out because my knees can't seem to hold up too well. I was never able to do much of anything before going gluten...
  6. You sound a lot like I did a year ago although you don't sound like you are in as bad of shape as I was. I was also on the verge of Type II diabetes. I never got tested but from all that I have learned about this disease I am quite confident it is what I have. I can pretty much eat whatever I want as long as it doesn't contain gluten. I only eat meat, fruits...
  7. Having celiac disease can be crippling if you allow it to be. It's not like having a terminal illness. For us the cure is to simply stop eating certain foods. Easier said than done sometimes. I find that people either understand why we can't eat certain things or they just don't get it all. Life is good as long as there is no gluten involved. Ianm
  8. You guys will hate me even more. I have lost 40lbs in the last year since going gluten-free. Because of the celiac disease I really watch what I eat and make sure I exercise regularly. Yes it is hard and it takes a lot of self-discipline but I have no other choice. I felt so awful eating gluten that my life had hit rock bottom and I almost lost everything...
  9. It wasn't until I read the Atkins diet book that I realized a food allergy might be why I felt so bad and had gained so much weight. I have lost 40 pounds with the Atkins and have never felt better. Another 10lbs would be nice. My impression of the Atkins is that it is more for people who have serious problems with weight. The South Beach seems like it is...
  10. I use to have nearly constant low grade fevers before I went gluten-free. Since then my body temp does seem to be somewhat below normal. Ianm
  11. We've all been there. The medical establishment in my experience is basically clueless about this disease but the members of this group are not. This disease really messed up my life too. I could go on and on about how it wasted the first 36 years of my life but that would be pointless. I have been gluten-free for a year and it has been a great year. It takes...
  12. I used to get a lot of dizzy spells and would black out for several minutes prior to going gluten-free. Over the past year that has happened only once. If I get an accidental hit of gluten I start to feel light headed. It usually happens within minutes of eating the poisoned food so I can usually avoid eating too much of it. Ianm
  13. All of the doctors I went to were clueless about celiac disease. They knew a lot about writing prescriptions though. The good thing about this disease is it forces you to pay attention to what you are shoveling into your mouth. You will be much healthier as a result. Ianm
  14. I have found conflicting information on beer and whiskey and would like to know more. After drinking a beer I don't notice any symptoms like I would if I ate a piece of bread. I only drink the dark beers like stouts and brown ales. I only have about 1 or 2 beers a month so that might be why I don't notice anything. Any info would be helpful. Ianm

    ARCHIVED Teen Vogue

I am fortunate that I can tolerate an accidental hit of gluten once and a while. There is probably some damage done but not much you can do about that sometimes. A lot of people don't understand food allergies because they think "Food allergy/intolerance? How can that be? Without food you will starve so it is impossible to be allergic to it." I know a few...
  16. Quite frankly I don't miss any of the garbage I used to eat at all! It made me feel so awfull and completely messed up my life. It has been a year since I have gone gluten-free and I have no desire to go back. Ianm
  17. I read the Atkins Diet book. There is a whole chapter on food intolerances and he described exactly what was wrong with me. Not one doctor I ever went to ever suggested a food allergy. This website provided me with a lot of good information also. Plus Dr Atkins was a very harsh critic of the grain based food pyramid. Dr Atkins felt that grain should only...
  18. My food bill is drastically lower too now that I am gluten-free. By eating protien, mostly green vegetables and certain fruits I can eat a small amount and not feel hungry for several hours. With the high carb, gluten grain diet I would stuff myself and still feel hungry. Ian
  19. I wonder if the "epidemic" of ADHD would go away if kids were simply fed a better diet. My parents always tried to provide a good diet but it was grain based because, well the food pyramid said that's what you should eat. I am an ardent follower of the Atkins diet. Dr. Atkins was a very harsh critic of the grain based food pyramid and I firmly believe he...
  20. It took about two months for me to lose the fatigue after going gluten-free. I found that once the gluten was out of my body I was able to start exercising. If I don't do a least some exercise everyday I don't have as much energy the next day. It takes some time but it does get better. Ian
  21. You sleep problems were exactly the same ones that I had prior to going gluten-free. since then I have done pretty good sleep wise. I will have to try your advice on the food additives to see if that makes any more of a difference. Ian
  22. I used to have night sweats where I would be drenched in sweat and all of the blankets would be soaked also. This seems to have gone away once I went gluten-free. Ian
  23. Prior to going gluten-free I would have extremely violent and vivid nightmares almost every night. I would wake up with my heart beating so hard I thought it would explode. Now that I am gluten-free I don't seem to dream much at all. Ian
  24. The unrelenting fatigue and mental fog were the worst part for me. People used to think I was retarded it would get so bad. I was labeled as such in school and was put into special education classes when I was younger when all I really needed to do was quit eating gluten. Since going gluten free most people can't keep up with me now. Ian
  25. I am so glad I found this site. I found out about celiac and gluten intolerance about a year ago. I spent 36 years struggling with this problem. I went to more doctors than I can count and none of them ever suggested a food allergy. They sure wanted to write me lots of prescriptions though. I finally began to realize what I had when I read the Atkins Diet...
