Really starchy vegetables like potatoes, corn and squash can disagree with me so I only eat them once in a while and in small quantities. Don't think it is an intolerance problem.

I would speak to the host before and let them know what the restrictions are. Sometimes there are problems but usually not. If there is a problem then I question if these are people I want to be around. If the fiance won't say anything then put his/her feet to the fire and demand to know why not. I am very assertive about my dietary restrictions and don't...

ARCHIVED "you Might Be A Celiac If....."
ianm replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I need to make a typo correction. That person didn't say "gluten, or whatever you call it" They said "globulin" after I probably said "gluten" 20 times. Now I am REALLY wondering how they got their socks on this morning. Not only are they dumb but deaf too! -

In the future you should wear a good particle mask when cleaning dirty area. I have to wear one just cleaning out my garage because the dirt and dust makes me rather ill. -

Glucose problem, somebody actually asked me that today! I politely corrected them and explained to them what gluten is. After a blank stare they offered me a donut and assured me it was gluten, or whatever you call it, free. Sometimes you just have to wonder how they get their socks on in the morning. -

I don't have problems with foods that are naturally high in sulfer. I don't think I have any intolerances to sulfites either. I have just noticed that anything with very large quantities of sulfites cause problems. Small amounts don't seem to cause any serious problems but I just avoid them as a courtesy to anybody in my immediate vicinity. -
ARCHIVED Shugr...new Gf Alternative To Other Sweeteners
ianm replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The type of sugar that is a problem is the refined white sugar. Because of the molecular complexity of refined white sugar it takes a larger amount of insulin for your body to break down so your body can digest it. Honey is a natural sugar and therefore does not require as much insulin to digest. Not only is too much refined white sugar added into processed... -
What I have found is that some people just cannot accept the fact that a food billions of people eat everyday could make someone sick. Also many people have no clue as to where their food comes from. That is why they think that a slice of Wonder Bread is okay because it is not whole wheat. In the case of Wonder Bread it is doubtful it has any natural ingrediants...

ARCHIVED Support For Beginning Days Of Going Gf
ianm replied to fritzicurls's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It seems that the average time to start feeling better is 3 months and a year to reach the healthy point. That is the way it was for me too. It is so worth it to follow this path. You will make mistakes along the way and get nailed with gluten from time to time. The only thing you can do is keep yourself as healthy as possible so that you can weather the... -

The general problem with the American diet is NOT WHAT we eat but HOW MUCH we eat. Americans eat portions that are way too big. Sugar, fat and carbs themselves are not bad it is when you eat TOO MUCH of them is when you become overweight, Type II diabetes, high blood pressure etc. Also if you do not engage in any physical activity that only compounds the... -
ARCHIVED Wearing Medical Alert Bracelet?
ianm replied to mytummyhurts's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Sally, nothing wrong with talking to yourself. I do it all the time because sometimes it is the only intelligent converstation I have all day! . From what I know about medical alert bracelets they are reserved for very serious problems like severe allergies to medications where someone could go into anaphylactic shock or worse. Celiac is serious but... -

ARCHIVED Dairy Products
ianm replied to SabrinaLuvsGluten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Because of the damage to the small intestine some of us can't tolerate dairy. The only dairy I eat anymore is cheese and yogurt and sometimes ice cream. All the cottage cheese, sour cream, etc. I find has guar gum in it. I don't drink milk anymore because it gives me gas. I don't eat anything with sulfites either, really gives me gas bad. -
It sometimes gets mixed with other stuff but it ain't gluten.

ARCHIVED Don't Know What's Wrong With Me...
ianm replied to curiousifcd's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
At the formal event you did what you could do. As far as your family is concerned they are just going to have to DEAL WITH IT! It is your body and you have to take care of it. If they don't like it TOO DAMN BAD. Don't be ashamed to make special requests in restaurants. Most of them will do what they can to accomodate you. If they won't go somewhere else... -
ARCHIVED Ratzinger--not Good For Celiacs

I live in in Michigan close enough to the Canadian border to watch CBC news frequently. It is good to know that politicians in The Great White North are just as sleazy as the ones in America. -
ARCHIVED Where To Start?
ianm replied to Bette's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist it is because you can't write a prescription for celiac. The only cure is to eat a gluten free diet and live a healthy lifestyle. If you are healthy you don't need to go to the doctor as much or buy prescriptions with side effects that are worse then the disease itself. I went to dozens of doctors and not... -
ARCHIVED Made A Mistake And Ate Puffins

There is a learning curve to this lifestyle. It will get easier. -
I usually experience some tingling, prickly sensations in my lips a few minutes after eating gluten. Once I feel that I stop eating to avoid ingesting anymore. Pay close attention to your body to try and learn any signals it may be giving off when gluten is ingested. I have been able to avoid any serious accidental gluten intake for a good six months now....

ARCHIVED Need A Little Help Knowing What Is Actually Safe?
ianm replied to SabrinaLuvsGluten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Buckwheat is the mutated pronunciation of the Dutch word for it. Buckwheat, amaranth and qinoa are all great to eat. Lots of protien, fiber and low in carbs. -
Westiepaws, when something bad happens you find out who your friends are real quick. To my surprise it was not the ones I thought it would be. The ones who run the other way are usually just parasites anyway so you are better off without them.
