I don't have an official diagnosis and doctors were of absolutely no help to me. I am healthier at 37 than I was at 17 and that is all that matters.

Canaries in a coal mine, makes sense to me. Just today I had a coworker tell me his adult son had been very ill for quite some time. He told his son about my condition and his son got tested for celiac and tested positive. Every since I turned my health and life around by going gluten-free it is starting to rub off on people around me. a number of them have...

Regardless of where the stem cells come from I still wouldn't do it. I have been forced to change my life in so many ways and all for the better. Knowing that i can't eat certain things and get very ill if I do forces me to eat better foods and take better care of myself in general. To me the disease has really been a blessing in disguise. A quick fix just...

I've never had a problem with Chilis. I usually end up going there a few times when I have to travel for work.

ARCHIVED Anonymous Testing Because Of Insurance
ianm replied to flapeedap's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I looked at my health insurance application and the only things they were really concerned with were cancer, AIDS, heart disease and diabetes. I would shop around for insurance because what is unacceptable to one may be okay with another. -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter
ianm replied to Eliza13's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I only buy Kroger natural peanut butter. Some of the "unnatural" kind are loaded with hydrogenated oils which are not good. -
ARCHIVED Kroger Products

I find that vinegar gives me gas so I try to avoid it when I'm in the presence of others. Doesn't make me feel bad but tends to clear the room out of people pretty quick. -
ARCHIVED Anonymous Testing Because Of Insurance

Hard to say on that one. The doctor would have to say that it was specifically related to celiac disease. Chances are they won't because we all know how much doctors know about celiac disease. -
I used to eat a lot of oats because it was supposed to be good for you. That was the first thing to go in my diet and I started feeling better. I ate more oats than I did wheat so for me there may have been something in the oats that was not good for me.

ARCHIVED Anonymous Testing Because Of Insurance

If you are already under a group plan through an employer you would not see a rate change or have it labeled a pre-existing condition. If you switch insurance plans some may consider celiac a pre-existing condition and some may not. Private insurers would probably look for any chance they get to gouge you. My employer was bought out by a much larger company... -
My weight went up to 250lbs before I went gluten-free. I lost 80lbs when I went on a gluten-free diet. I have to carefully monitor what I eat because I gain weight very easily. Weight gainers seem to be in the minority of celiacs but that is one of the symptoms.

I guess that depends upon how you define "cure". If a shot of stem cells means that I now get to eat Twinkies then no thanks, I don't want to be cured. For me a gluten free diet has "cured" me. I went from 250lbs to 170lbs when I went gluten-free. I can now exercise, finish school and hundreds of other things I could only dream about before.

ARCHIVED Kroger Products
ianm replied to VydorScope's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have not had any problems with a lot of Kroger brand items and they have always been able to answer my questions. I buy a lot of their products because I live 3 blocks from a Kroger. -
ARCHIVED Self-diagnosis
ianm replied to Saw's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If eliminating gluten makes you feel better then don't eat it. It really is that simple. The fatigue and brain fog is a horrible way to live. I did it for 36 years. My life is so different since I stopped eating gluten that a test will only confirm what is already obvious. -
Northern European mongrel. A mix of the Scandinavian and Germanic ethnic groups.

I'm not so sure having a formal diagnosis will help with the in-laws. Even today some of the people who knew me when I was at my glutened worse still don't get it. -
ARCHIVED Gf Beer--i'll Let You Know How It Goes!
ianm replied to jenvan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I could really go for a Newcastle Brown Ale right now . A Guiness Stout would be just as good. MMM Beer (Homer Simpson gurgling noises) I never had a reaction from beer but have decided that it would be best to give it up. Learning to appreciate wine more. Miller Light? You could just pee in a bottle and you would never know the difference. Drink a... -
I used to get seasonal allergies really bad but over the past year they have gone away. Allegra works really well and I never had any side effects from it. Tree pollen would rip my throat up and I could barely talk during the month of May. So far so good.

ARCHIVED Need Help Where Do I Go From Here
ianm replied to twofoku's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't have an official diagnosis but it is so obvious what the problem is. I found out about gluten intolerance by way of the Atkins diet. I stopped eating gluten before I even knew tests were available. My health and life in general have made such a dramatic turnaround that there is no way I will eat gluten to get a test done. I am of Northern European... -

ARCHIVED Butter

Never had a problem with Kroger butter. It is the only kind I buy. I would call the Kroger number. They have always been able to answer my questions. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Dog Food?
ianm replied to KaitiUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have owned several dogs and in my experience it's not the food they eat you need to worry about when they lick you. It is all of the other disgusting things that dogs can't resist putting in their mouths like roadkill and things of that nature . -
ARCHIVED I'll Admit It. I'm Afraid To Eat Out.
ianm replied to frenchiemama's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I have to travel for work frequently and have rarely had a problem. Once you get more confortable with the lifestyle it becomes easier and eating out isn't as big of a deal as it seems right now. Don't be afraid to ask the waitstaff about the food. They are usually willing to help. -
ARCHIVED How Tall Are U?
ianm replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am 5' 9" about average. My brother was always real short until he turned 20 and then he grew to 6' 6" in a very short period of time. I know other men that were really short and then in their early 20's really grew.
