Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

  1. I showed that list to some non-celiac friends and they just didn't get it. I thought it was hilarious.
  2. As far as school and gluten intolerance the more that things change the more they stay the same. School sucked for me when I was a kid and I see it sucked for that little girl. I hope her parents make sure that all of her future teachers understand her condition and NEVER cut the teachers any slack whatsoever.
  3. In the US you keep going to the doctor until your insurance company drops you for excessive usage. However they won't pay for you to see a nutritionist or homeopath who may actually solve the problem. Then you are forced to only go to emergency rooms which are more expensive and are required by law to treat you regardless if you have insurance or not. Since...
  4. Peaches503, It will take a lot longer than 2 weeks to notice any difference. The average seems to be at least three months for any noticable changes to occur and a good year to really be healthy. There is no instant cure. You will have to carefully monitor your diet and give it more time. It WILL get better and you will be glad you stuck with it.
  5. In my experience the only thing doctors are taught in med school anymore is how to be a dope dealer. I have two cousins who are doctors and one of them has never even heard of celiac. The other had heard of it but didn't really know what it was. I asked them how much nutrition training is offered in med school and the one didn't have any and the other went...
  6. I never had any skin problems but if I use shampoo with gluten in it my scalp really itches.
  7. It will take more than a couple of months to feel better. It was 3 months when I started to get better and a good year before I could say I was healthy. Look very carefully at the foods you are eating because you may be getting some gluten from something. It takes a while to get a diet established and learn where to find hidden gluten. Your body has been...
  8. Welcome June. Doctors were of absolutely no help to me. I have learned more form this website than any other source. I am self diagnosed also and I don't need a formal diagnosis either. My life is so drastically different and better since I stopped eating gluten. It's never too late to go gluten free and you're not alone here. Lots of very informed people...
  9. If you keep at it you will end up feeling so much better that you will wonder what all the fuss was about. It eventually becomes a habit and you really won't give it much thought. Stick with it because it is worth the effort. I found it wasn't as big of a change as it may appear right now. You really don't sacrifice as much as you think you will need to....
  10. Check out the New Vision website www.newvision.com. They're a mail order company and make some good products. The minerals are pricey but for me about 1oz every three days works for me so I can stretch a bottle out. They make liquid vitamins but they're pricey so I just use their liquid minerals and take whatever vitamins I find on sale at the grocery store...
  11. Since this disease affects the gastro-intestinal system we have some really lovely discussions here . Basically there is not much that hasn't already been discussed that would gross us out. It's nothing that we havent' seen or done before. I don't have a formal diagnosis but it is so obvious what my problem is. I was so sick from eating gluten that my life...
  12. Supplements are NOT a waste of time they make a huge difference. And what is this whole grain nonsense? In case you haven't noticed that is something we CAN"T eat.
  13. My bill went way down because I don't eat processed foods anymore and very carefully monitor what I eat. By eating a diet of meat, veggies, dairy (cheese & yogurt mostly) and fruit I simply don't need to eat nearly as much as I used to.
  14. Since there are so many unknowns the only safe thing to do is avoid gluten. You will get nailed with gluten from time to time no matter how diligent you are. If you keep yourself healthy you will minimize any damage and recover faster from any accidental poisoning. It's really the only thing we can do.
  15. I really like the New Vision brand of liquid minerals. They have been a real help for me.
  16. I went to so many doctors and not one of them ever suggested a food allergy. There are very few doctors out there that will be of any help. Basically we're on our own with this. Getting nailed with gluten from time to time is inevitable. I've found that by keeping myself as healthy as possible I can recover in a day or two depending upon much I ingested....
  17. I could have easily been taking 60 pills a day with all of the crap that the doctors prescribed for me. Joe C may have known he had celiac but from my experience he could have been under the care of doctors that knew nothing about the disease. I went to at least 30 different doctors and not one of them ever suggested a food allergy. It does sound like Joe...
  18. Welcome. You will find that your new lifestyle is not going to be as difficult as it first appears. Once you've done it for a while it becomes a habit and you really don't have to think too much about it. You will be glad you were forced to live in a healthier manner I know I sure am. I am 37 and remember in high school it was Rush, Rush and only Rush...

    ARCHIVED Godfathers

That's great they'll make a "customized" pizza just for you but I have one question. Do they prepare the dough in the same place they make the regular dough? If they do then there could be the potential for cross contamination.

    ARCHIVED Weight Gain

I had a serious weight problem before going gluten free. I also don't get the full feeling in my stomach so I have to carefully monitor how much I eat because I can easily eat to much and not realize it. The low carb thing has worked exceptionally well for me but may not be for everyone. Whenever I get nailed with gluten I get bloated. Bloating used to be...
  21. The early stages of the Atkins diet are high in fat and protien. Once you have lost weight you begin to alter the food you eat. When you get to the maintenance stage you eat a more balanced diet. I now eat balanced portions of protien, fats (both plant and animal), vegetables and fruits. Most people when they say they are "doing Atkins" have never bothered...
  22. I was 36 when I realized what was wrong. Doctors were of absolutely no help to me. They would just write me lots of prescriptions in hopes that one would eventually work. It is no wonder our health care system is going bankrupt. My life has been radically transformed since I stopped eating gluten.
  23. I don't have a formal diagnosis but I feel so much better since going gluten-free that I really don't need one. Try not eating gluten for a while and if you feel better then that is all you really need to know. The only "cure" for this disease is to stop eating gluten so it won't hurt to try.
  24. People either get it or they don't. I just reached a point where I don't care if I offend someone or not because I won't eat their food. It's my body and I will protect it by any means necessary. I was too sick for too long to be put out of action just so I won't hurt someone's feelings. It's my body and if someone doesn't respect my right to keep it healthy...
  25. What does not kill you only makes you stronger. That has got to be one of the corniest but most profound sayings ever. Whenever something bad happens and I'm still breathing and above ground then I try to look for the positive in it. Sometimes it is MUCH easier said than done but it must be done.
