  1. Yesterday we had a birthday lunch for our manager (department of four) and we went to a nice restaurant. I ate a bowl of cottage cheese with flax meal just before going so I wouldn't be so hungry I'd eat something questionable. I planned on a basic salad with oil and vinegar. But when I got there they had on the menu an appetizer of an artichoke (hot...
  2. It's funny, I just remembered all the times I went to doctors and told them about my stomach woes. They would always ask if I had diahrrea or constipation and I'd say constipation and that would be the end of it. I never knew until just now they were all deciding that gluten wasn't my problem. Weird! Stephanie
  3. PS yes it is a vicious cycle! There's a web site I read once that compared it to a checking account. You can eat sugary things for a while before it starts to affect you but at some point, you overdraw. Then you eat a sugary thing to boost yourself back up and you go down even farther, think of overdrawing AND getting that insufficient funds fee. It keeps...
  4. There are things you can do to make even potatoes ok for you. Anything that is high-glycemic (like a potato - some claim they have the same effect on your body as if you dug out all the potato and filled the skin with white sugar) can be made lower glycemic by adding protein, fat and/or fiber. So if you use cheese and/or sour cream (whole milk, not skim)...
  5. I found the pasta round up to be interesting. I read that section for regular foods from time to time and find that I agree with their choices many times (like I've seen them list the best salamis, the best cheddar cheese, etc). I was surprised though that the Ancient Harvest was as low as it is, but really surprised the Lundberg one is so low. Lundberg rice...
  6. I just have to say this - what's up with the political references? That has absolutely nothing to do with gluten-intolerance. Just curious. Stephanie
  7. I think many of the people on this list have tried Atkins or low carb - some figured out they were gluten-intolerant because of that diet. That is how I figured it out, actually. I was feeling great for the first year of the diet, then I started adding back in all these low carb breads, etc, and they are like 99% gluten. Gross! I would feel pretty nauseated...
  8. I bought some whole grain Kamut a couple of years ago. I was intimidated by how big of a grain it is! Like four times the size of a rice grain. Never ate any of it. I had Kamut bread but preferred Spelt bread to it. Supposed to be really healthy, but not for us. It's an ancient version of wheat. Beer would be ok, but he'd enjoy it way too much... (I know...
  9. I dunno, Kamut has some pretty darn big grain!!! Kamut pellet gun... now that would be some serious action. Stephanie

    ARCHIVED Sick!

Could be the pizza crust. If it had bean/soy flour in it it could cause you gastro upset and nausea. Or potato starch/flour or corn... lots of possibilities. Could also just be you are only on day 2 of eating gluten free and your body is all confused. You might have withdrawls or trouble digesting. Lots of possibilities. I hope you feel better soon...

    ARCHIVED Depression

No kidding on the personal comment! I have been thinking about this some lately. I was diagnosed as depressed, then bipolar 2, then anxiety disorder before going gluten free (or changing my diet in any way). When I started eliminating foods that caused me problems, I stopped feeling those ways. So I decided I didn't have those problems, it was just...
  12. Another thing to consider is that you may develop a more sensitive reaction to gluten as time goes on. I just felt generally crummy most of the time before going gluten free. I had some intestinal issues and some mood/neurological issues, but would not have thought they were connected. After going gluten free I had hidden gluten a few times and felt bad for...
  13. I went out and bought a couple of copies. Even better in print. Bummer about not getting interviewed! Well, it was still pretty good. The cover picture of the woman shopping with all the gluten items flying off the shelves at her is pretty good - I'm thinking of hanging it in my cube at work. Or maybe the part that explains what Celiac and gluten-intolerance...
  14. PreOptMegs - We're twins! That is really funny!!! Well, it's sort of not. I mean we are supposedly in the perfect weight range for our size but mine's all in my belly right now, too, and all my pants are too tight. I'm really not ok with that. Going low carb has helped me with this before but I'm thinking I must have some thing going on with my gut...
  15. Great article! And I recognize the quote from this site! What's coolest about this is my parents, friends, brother, etc, all read the Chron so now I can back up my story with this one. You know how some people just see things as more legit when they are printed somewhere... Stephanie
  16. Was it a fasting test? That can affect you. I was having the worst lightheadedness when getting a blood test done (had to fast from the night before) and when I got my results I was stunned my blood glucose level was 101. I thought it had to be in the 60's or lower. It made me embarassed that I'd been so cranky with having to wait (yep, love being cranky...
  17. I was fine for the first 5 months or so. Then my pants got a little snug. I weighed myself recently and in the last month I've gained almost 10 pounds. Yes, I'm depressed. I'm not sure what the change is - everything got tighter when I had a gluten reaction about a month back, and I thought it was just bloat. But it's been a month now. In my gut's defense...
  18. Back to RNs - a good friend is graduating at the end of the month with his BS in nursing and he has been taught that only children have/get Celiac's. He's a very easy to talk with person so I'm thinking of sitting down with him and giving him an education in gluten-intolerance. The nursing school in my town is a top-rated school and I know this friend of...
  19. I have been going through this recently - I have changed my hormone regemine as well as having some kind of minor virus and things have slowed up quite a bit as a result. It's taken a couple of days but now it appears the magnesium I'm taking is helping out again. Funny stuff, that magnesium. I wish I'd known about it years ago. If I take 800 mg a night...
  20. Great! Can you imagine is our migraine med had gluten in it? Like I need more migraines. What a vicious cycle. Thanks for finding out! Stephanie
  21. Abby - my problem exactly. I totally have anxiety especially about calling people/companies. It has improved but is still a factor of my life. That's what I love about email. I have found it to work pretty well, too, so don't worry about calling if you're not up to it. I have only called maybe two places. The rest were email and I got 90% of the info I wanted...
  22. Let us know. I was given some of that as a sample from my doc - haven't used it yet... Steph
  23. Ahhhh, now that's a good reason for a cell phone. I don't have one yet (I can't believe the personal calls you hear when you're in the store!!! mortifying to me if obviously not to the perpetrator!!!) but when I do finally get one, that's one thing I'll use it for. As for emailing, I felt it was wimpy but I'd say I have about a 95% response rate. One or...
  24. This makes me think of when I got my EnteroLab results - my antibodies were in the high-normal range and I didn't have an obvious Celiac gene so I was frustrated and decided I was going to go out and have a Round Table Pizza to see what would happen. But somehow I convinced myself not to do that (good idea) and I still haven't had one since. I had forgotten...
  25. I have also read about citric acid possibly containing wheat if made in another country. I have my own problems with citric acid - I think I'm sensitive to aspergillis which is the mold that citric acid is made from (with sugar) for the most part - most citric acid is not made from citrus or other fruits, it is too costly that way. Aspergillis is also used...
