CaliGirl - yes, that sounds like what I get. Especially the breathing part. I saw my doctor last week and asked about it and he asked how long the episodes last - I said 5 mins? Maybe a little longer, except the one that was about an hour. And that they go away with B vitamin supplementation. He said that B vitamins can help blood vessels to relax, if they...

ARCHIVED Grill Contamination
skbird replied to Emme999's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I eat regularly at a bbq at my health food store and always ask them to clean the grill when they cook my turkey patty ("turkey patty with provolone and avocado, no seasoning, please clean the grill"). I have not ever been glutened after eating there. They use bbq sauce and other things on the grill and sometimes my food takes a little longer because of cleaning... -
I think one of my scariest times was when I got back from a trip to France last year. I didn't sleep right and because of the time change my food schedule was all out of wack. I was on the phone with my mom in the morning telling about the trip when I started to feel queasy. Finally I got off the phone, just as it hit me so badly I couldn't move. I was trying...

ARCHIVED Wearing Medical Alert Bracelet?
skbird replied to mytummyhurts's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I have been thinking about this, too. I have gluten intolerance and nightshade intolerance, plus shellfish allergy and a seemingly allergic reaction that occurs to aspergillus niger which is in/produces about 80% of the citric acid out there, including that which is in Betadine. I'm mostly worried about the problems that can occur from having an allergic... -

I know that sometimes certain characters in fonts like " or ' don't come through on the web (I do a lot of web work) and that when you have Cold Fusion (like this forum uses) then it will substitute a ? when it can't recognize a character. So maybe for some the ? comes out as an actual character or value but on mine for sure it doesn't. Also, for fractions... -
Steve-o - another thing is the lenght of the GTT. Most of the time they are just 2-3 hours, mainly because they test for diabetes. But to have an accurate one for hypoglycemia, it should be 4-5 hours. Also, they should take tests of your sugar levels every 15 mins, not the 30 they tend to do. You might have to be pushy to get that, though. Also, if you have...

ARCHIVED Help! Glutened By A Friend!
skbird replied to Twister2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, I feel bad about making friends feel bad about not having anything I can eat. I have this one friend who keeps telling me that she asks for a list of what to avoid but I haven't had time to sit down with her yet to explain so I haven't given her one for that reason. I instead just bring things I can eat with me. But you guys are right, it's more... -
I'm not a doctor but I've learned a lot about hypoglycemia. I would say that you are reactive hypoglycemia. The thing is when your insulin levels are high, that means the second you get carbs/sugars in your body, your insulin sweeps it away out of your blood, which results in low blood sugar episodes. Many people who are diagnosed as hypoglycemia (if they...

Sooooo hungry now......... [Homer sounds....] I may be weird that way but I rarely prefer the fast way of doing anything involving food. I just get such a kick out of making things from scratch. It's like art or something to me. My husband got me a really nice knife for Christmas - it was like getting me a great paintbrush. Ahhhhh, so sublime when you... -
ARCHIVED Any "home-canners" Out There?
skbird replied to jenvan's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Ooooh! I want to try the thimbleberry!!! Thanks, Kimberly, for the tip. I'll look for Certo. I have tons of jars. I don't like to use plastic for tupperware so I buy canning jars - they work just fine and are cheaper than buying specialty glass or ceramic storage containers. Stephanie -
ARCHIVED Tell Me About Hypothyroid
skbird replied to julie5914's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have a narrow range of comfort when it comes to temps. I prefer cool to hot, though. Because I can always put on more clothes but when it's hot there's nothing you can do. I tend to bring sweaters to work in the summer - too much air conditioning. This is interesting to me because I just got my thyroid tested today - and complete tests, not just TSH... -

I have been diligently saving my loganberries because I want to make some jam for the first time ever. This is the second year they've fruited and so far I have harvested about 2 quarts worth. I want to make some jam with xylitol - probably freezer jam as this is my first time. My breadmachine actually has a jam/jelly mode but I can't find the book and recipes... -
Tiffany - I totally play scientist with my breakfast! I have been fairly unstable recently so I have cut out the maple syrup in my yogurt and today I even skipped the agave but had stevia instead. Plus flax meal for fiber and stability, plus almonds (fiber and protein) and cinnamon to help with insulin. Ha! Before I went gluten free I was having feelings...

ARCHIVED Mac & Cheese Sauce Ingredients
skbird replied to karenwinslow1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Easiest way to get the mac and cheese fix is buy Annies frozen mac and cheese with rice pasta. But it's usually about $3 a box (unless you get luck at your Grocery Outlet - sometimes they sell it there, hit or miss, and when they did last time it was $1 a box - I stocked up big time!) But what I usually do when I want that mac and cheese experience is... -
Yeah, it's like sugar crashes - then people eat more sugar to give themselves a little "pick up". And then make it worse. It's like living on credit and not paying the bill. That's what I like about licorice - it actually benefits the adrenal glands by taking up some of the slack so they can heal. Stephanie

ARCHIVED Delicious Gf Indian Flat Bread!

This sounds great but when I look at the recipe, I get a bunch of "?" for the measurements - were they 1/2 tsp, etc? I figure I can just roll with it and figure it out but was wondering if it was 1/2 cup water or 1/3 or 3/4 or ??? (I put those "?" in there.. hahahaha!) Thanks! Stephanie -
ARCHIVED Gf Aspartame/splenda-free Diet Soda
skbird replied to UIDancer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Supposedly in Japan they make Diet Coke with stevia. I think that's so cool! But they don't consider stevia a sweetener/food here in the US so they can't use it. What I tend to do is take club soda and add fruit flavor and liquid stevia (comes with an eyedropper). That makes a great soda. Also, there is a cookbook for stevia and they have a recipe in... -
I think I've heard that some people have found some of the best gluten free foods/breads in France. It was a while ago someone posted that... Also Italy is supposed to be pretty good. France is actually the place I was that set me off the most as I decided to indulge in all sorts of breads, croissants, etc, for the first time in a couple of years - by...

Actually, Isomalt isn't barley. It's not a malt, either. It's a sugar alcohol. When I get a second (running off to a meeting) I'll put in the link to the bit I wrote about this last week... Stephanie PS Here it is: Open Original Shared Link -
This is funny - I always read how much people love the Chebe mixes... so I looked them up the other day to read the ingredients and I recognized the package - I ordered two of them last December and they are in my cupboard - so far unused as I keep forgetting about them! Ha! Good find... Stephanie - who will be having pizza tonight!

Sdrover - Wow, I thought I was the only one! At first when this would happen to me I thought that maybe there was tomato or something in the salad they didn't wash off right. But it tastes a little funny to me and when I taste that I know I'm going to be in for it. Some store-bought ready to eat salad mixes have it on them, too. Also, a friend's restaurant... -

Hi Kaiti - Well, I think he was just being flip - doesn't know I specificially can or can't have Ben and Jerry's. I actually don't eat most Ben and Jerry's - because of the sugar. I eat occasionally the Ben and Jerry's that is organic as that has cane juice in it and no corn syrup (something I avoid for sugar purposes, not for the corn). He could just... -
Not to digress too much, but I believe the reason we retain antibodies to the chicken pox virus is because we actually retain the virus in our nerves in our spinal region. I say this because I had an outbreak of shingles when I was 18 and that is caused by the chicken pox virus emerging when your immune system is weakened and travels along a nerve from the...
