  1. I was diagnosed with IBS 12 years ago. Nevermind that none of the meds for it ever seemed to help. The ads for zelnorm and the pepto ad (with the five or six people doing the song and dance about all their symptoms) really irritate me. Stephanie - who's mad at everything rignt now because she took glutenized Tums. Argh!!!
  2. God, why didn't I read this thread? I have been having ongoing stomach problems lately and have finally started taking things like Pepsid, Zantac, etc. Last night I was shoping for more Pepsid but both the name brand and store brand said they had "starch " or "pre-gelatinized starch" with no source so I decided not to get them. I got generic Tagament instead...
  3. I started taking a supplement recommended by Michelle (Bean) here called Brevail (by Barlean) - it is made of lignans and was totally amazing. My mood has been great. I have taken it for 34 days so far and have only gotten irritable twice (that is beyond amazing for me) and I had no cramps prior to my period this month. I did have some during my period but...
  4. My natural stomach coating remedy is DGL Licorice. (DGL means it is deglyccorized, which is the element in licorice that raises your blood pressure). It is a chewable. The brand I like is "Nature's Life". Don't worry if you don't like licorice - it doesn't taste a thing like black licorice, for whatever reason. I have a coworker who hates licorice who is...
  5. Count me in the boat of those who self-diagnosed after going low carb. The low carb bread is full of gluten - when I tried that stuff out, not only did it taste terrible, but it caused me lots of problems. I get canker sores, too. In fact, last Friday I was at the rheumatologist, and we were talking about the sores I get. He told me they were most likely...
  6. Ditto what Sue said - if a family member has an autoimmune disease, you can have a high ANA just because of that. I just went to a rheumatologist today (my ANA was 1:320) and I have some joint pain, lately my ankles. Anyway, I was surprised how much he knew about gluten intolerance and Celiac. I am not Celiac and told him that much but as we went down the...
  7. I usually get a sushi roll and then go get a little salad dressing cup of the Braggs liquid aminos (in the salad bar) and chuck out the soy sauce that comes with it. I've not had a problem - done this three times now at two different Whole FOods. I also have gotten salad at the salad bar (I know, risky) and no problems. Sounds like a bummer of an experience...
  8. I used to love Grape Nuts - in fact, the week before going gluten-free I was eating my first box in several years (had been low carb for a couple of years before gluten-free). I still miss them. That and Wheat Chex, oh and Shredded Wheat. I've *made* water bagels before. They are definitely different than most commercial ones. Gluten free bagels just...
  9. Wendy and Frenchiemama sound just like me, too. It's funny how you forget about how bad it was "back then" before going gluten-free. I mean not completely, but just some of the details. Esp. the "you're so sensitive" part. I get that ALL the FREAKIN' time... even now! Before it explained all these reactions, now it supposedly explains why I'm sensitive to...
  10. This is an absolutely amazing thread for many reasons. Lately I have been thinking about my relationship with my husband a lot, with regards to my health. I have been having a lot of IBS problems lately and he has seen me over the past six years give up more and more foods, try more and more supplements, try different diets, etc. I have tried to not make...
  11. Yeah, celiac3270, I've made jokes about that, too! Yeah, rice? Sure! Fish? Sounds more and more like my diet every day... You totally cracked me up! Stephanie
  12. I think this is an interesting argument - the sudden quitting and that affecting your health in other ways, but then consider all the people who have been on the show Survivor, for example, and they don't usually get any gluten during their stay there. In fact, thinking about that show, I always cringe when someone on the show wins a challenge and gets...
  13. I used to drink alcohol, now I can't tolerate it at all. I am not an alcoholic - it seems to have to do with my blood sugar problems. Funny because I used to be able to drink quite a bit - I live in Chico, CA where Sierra Nevada is made (I can smell it from my house, talk about a raw deal!) and I haven't been able to drink that for about three years. Wine...
  14. Oat flour has been my main baking flour the last few years, until I quit gluten. I really loved it in the foods I was making. I am not willing to try it again at this point, however, because of the studies about people reacting to avenin. I don't know if I would but don't really want to go there. I also don't really need to have any more excuses to eat any...

    ARCHIVED Eating

I remember my mom getting mad at me because whenever we ordered from the drivethru I would request something like mayo on my burger, and that would always mean we'd have to park and they'd come out with the food. I didn't mean for that to happen but in retrospect - it was a good strategy because it meant that my food was freshly made, not under a heat lamp...

    ARCHIVED Eating

I'm weird like this, but I don't really eat fast food. But I do eat occasionally at In N Out Burger. I used to get a burger protein style (patty and cheese, wrapped in lettuce) but since they use a rinse on their lettuce that contains citric acid (manufactured from aspergillus niger, which I am allergic to) I don't eat it that way now - I request "Flying...
  17. My husband uses a generic listerine (usually a Raley's grocery store brand) and I use it sometimes, too, and no problems. I was wary at first but have had no problems. I don't like other mouthwashes - they just seem like minty sugar water. Anyway, go for it! Stephanie
  18. I don't know a whole lot about this but am constantly researching these days. I have read on gluten-free sites that a gluten free diet is healthful for someone who has other autoimmune diseases but have not found any other sites about autoimmune disease that recommends limiting or getting rid of gluten. It's a one-way street, information-wise at this point...
  19. I'm going to a rheumatologist on Friday to see if I have a connective tissue disease (like RA, lupus, scleroderma) and one of my questions will be about this. I have done a little research (OK, a lot!!!) about these and have found connections between the two gluten-intolerant (non-celiac) genes that I do have and both scleroderma as well as lupus. I thought...
  20. Hi Mary Jo! Nice to see you over here! I agree. Dr. Fine is doing a lot to help people understand their conditions and how to improve through diet. I think the argument that the reason it seems there are so many positive test results reported on boards like this one is that people are already having many of the symptoms associated wtih this disease. Meaning...
  21. I was tested through EnteroLab and found to be negative on casein intolerance (I was 6, and <10 is negative). I eat a lot of cheese, some goat milk, yogurt every day. I am also not noticably lactose intolerant. But I possibly have a connective tissue disease and everything I've read says that dairy can cause inflammation which worsens those conditions...
  22. I go back and forth - these days my worst sugar offense is one or two of those Pamela's cookies. I may use some agave nectar, rarely some maple syrup (real stuff), or a little sugar in an 85% cocoa chocolate bar. For the most part I avoid sugar - just causes me more problems than not. I also avoid 100% any artificial sweetener. I will use xylitol and...
  23. I was just talking about this to someone the other day, but I was using the phrase "high maintenance." I was saying that I am not high maintenance, but in fact, I really am - I have to be. Since I don't have an official diagnosis, I don't relate it to being a disease, though it still is for me. I do have some other stuff going on that may turn out to be something...

    ARCHIVED I Had To Laugh...

I'm laughing now. I was cracking up about this the other day - somehow I still consider myself low maintenance!!! I used to laugh my head off when watching the movie "When Harry Met Sally" and she thought she was low maintenance, but he says she's the worst kind - she thinks she's low maintenance, but really she's high maintenance. Well, that's me, now. ...
  25. I'm glad for this topic - my husband thought I was crazy having these dreams. Then I told him that other people had them on the list and he now thinks it's an interesting phenomenon. Anyway, I have had one more since my last post. I must be going through another phase or something. Stephanie
