ARCHIVED Larabars
skbird replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just tried the ginger snap one this weekend and LOVED it! I gave one to my brother (he was hungry for sweets) and he thought it was great. Said it tastes like pumpkin pie. I have had the banana one and while I love most things banana, I didn't like it all that much. I thought it would be my favorite. Who knows? I have some of those kinikinick donuts... -
ARCHIVED Please Help With Wife's Lab Work
skbird replied to plowboyjames's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have read that there is something like 1-5% of people with Celiac who don't have either of those two genes. I don't have either, and I don't believe I have Celiac as I don't seem to have malabsorption, but I do have intense gastrointestinal symptoms and also neurological ones when I consume gluten. So it's important to consider that while the main diagnosis... -
ARCHIVED Please Help With Wife's Lab Work
skbird replied to plowboyjames's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi James - I'm in a similar place. I have been diagnosed with non-Celiac gluten intolerance and recently went in for some tests to rule out any other auto-immune disorders, like thyroid and arthritis. My thyroid was fine and sed rate, RH factor all normal. But my ANA was high positive. I don't know if this means anything or not but can tell you... -
Do any of you have any kind of weird sensations in your hands/wrists? I get this a lot, and have had it fairly intensly for about a week now. It feels like, for example, there is something between the knuckle in my hand on my little finger that is pushing it away from the rest of my hand. It's not quite a painful feeling, just feels like there is pressure...

ARCHIVED Larabars
skbird replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In my defense, I don't do well with sugar so a bar like this is pretty good for me. And chocolate coconut was the other one I liked. I don't think I liked the apple one. But I was always wanting to go to Burger King as a kid, instead of McDonalds because BK had cherry pies, not just apple... I'm a cherry lover. Steph -
ARCHIVED Larabars
skbird replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know, I really like them. I love the cherry pie one and the chocolate fudge one. Perfect for me, I like nuts and cherries, don't want a lot of ingredients with a hundred letters in them... I mean, how different are they from trail mix? Plus a lot more convenient, just unwrap and chow. I'd like to have more protein in them but I still think they... -
Well, I just got a call from my GP's nurse - I'm getting referred to a rheumatologist. I asked what my GP thought/said when he saw the test and she said he just said, "High ANA - we need to refer her to a rheumatologist." So that's that. Now the waiting game commences.... From what I understand, because symptoms in connective tissue diseases can go into...

Wow, I hope your warranty isn't up! That's just not fun. Not like you can go out and buy a new one! Sue - I hope you get some good info from the rheumatologist. I just called my doctor (emailed him yesterday, so far no response) and left a message to ask what I should do next, more tests, or what. I have googled this a bit on the internet and lupus comes...

Hi Jen - yeah, I usually hate it but this time it was actually pretty fast! I just got labs done last Thurs and it's only a week later. I just sent an email to my doctor to ask more about this. I hope he has some thoughts... Stephanie

I got more of my results earlier today. I'm still confused. Sounds like I'll be getting more testing done... Stephanie

Thanks for the link, Jen. I have looked at that site before but always forget to bookmark it. I found a decent link about this test result: Open Original Shared Link I'm not sure what it means for me. It likely indicates I have autoimmune stuff going on, something I already figured, but looks like it indicates conditions I'm not sure I have. The main...

OK, I have some questions and I'm hoping someone out there can help. I had some lab tests done last week to check thyroid funtion and also an arthrisis panel. I got the results back yesterday and it seems I am fine in the thyroid (TSH of 1.35, normal T3 uptake, normal T4, normal Free Thyroxine Index) and for the arthritis panel I had low normal uric acid...

ARCHIVED Citric Acid/ Ascorbic Acid
skbird replied to RondaS's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Rhonda - I don't think the same reaction would occur. I think if you are allergic to citrus then you would be sensitive to derrivatives to citrus but not things that are similar to it, but not made of it. I could be wrong and am not a scientist but that is what I'd hypothesize. I don't know where you'd get tested for aspergillus niger - I did google... -
ARCHIVED Citric Acid/ Ascorbic Acid
skbird replied to RondaS's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
PS the majority of citric acid is manufactured as I mentioned above as extracting it from citrus fruits is very costly/wasteful. So you might want to look into other aspects of it if you have problems. There aren't many good sources of info on the web - aspergillus has many varieties and as a mold can make people sick. Somehow processing it makes it less... -
ARCHIVED Citric Acid/ Ascorbic Acid
skbird replied to RondaS's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hello - I have problems with citric acid - but only the kind that is manufactured. The stuff that occurs naturally in citrus fruits is fine for me. The manufactured kind is made by fermenting aspergillus niger (a bacteria like penecillin) with sugar (like molassas) and the end product is citric acid. I seem to be sensitive to aspergillus niger - also... -
ARCHIVED Restaurant Card Converted To .doc
skbird replied to VydorScope's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
They should have one for Jedi Knights or something. Gluten is from the dark side. If you give me any gluten, the Republic will become almighty, and the Death Star will triumph over the rebels. Maybe Darth Vader was Celiac? Stephanie -
This isn't in Legoland but if you are in Oceanside (near the mall) there is a Mimi's Cafe which is a chain restaurant. They are very good about gluten-free. Don't have a specific menu but will accomodate your requests. It's not far off the highway. Open Original Shared Link Also other San Diego area info: Open Original Shared Link I think it was...

I'm sorry - that looks painful! I had a dream two nights ago that I had a rash just like that all over one of my legs and as I looked at it I said, wow, I do have DH. Yikes! Thankfully it was a dream. Also looks a lot like what shingles looks like - I had that when I was 18. If DH is anything like shingles... shudder.... A doctor should be...

ARCHIVED Restaurant Card Converted To .doc
skbird replied to VydorScope's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I found these today just poking around hoping for a good card in Chinese. Some don't print all that legibly to me but maybe someone who speaks the language will have a better time than I do... Open Original Shared Link It's an index page of a web site but if you go to a specific language and click on it, you'll get a page with four copies of the card... -
I bought "Going Against The Grain" last night and have been reading some very interesting stuff. Specifically the "20 year rule" observed by a certain scientist (don't recall his name off hand) but he noticed that in societies that didn't have grains as a food all went through 20 years of seemingly no problem when grain was introduced, then started having...

Hi - My nails started growing in better and a split I had for about 3 years finally went away. I haven't been so sure about my hair - it seems to be coming out more lately, but I do have lots of 2 inch long hair all over my head (the rest of my hair is past my shoulders). But it is getting shinier than it was before. Nice to have good suprises! ...

ARCHIVED Treated Special And Loving It!
skbird replied to watkinson's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
When I was on vacation last October - one week after going gluten-free, we met up with some friends on the coast and it was one of their birthdays so we got invited along for dinner. It was at an Italian restaurant and I was really worried about it but didn't want to make a big deal. The place only had about 12 dishes and was pretty small. Turned out the... -

ARCHIVED Chinese Noodles
skbird replied to lauriel234's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have been getting these for a while now, they are House Tofu Shirataki Noodles. I have been finding them in more and more places - both the main grocery store chains in my town as well as my health food stores sell them. They are about $1-2. They serve 2 I think, and come in water. You have to rinse them as they have a bit of a seaweed smell to them at... -
ARCHIVED How Long Are Typical Reactions?
skbird replied to aidansmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My reactions seem to range from a few days (4) to nearly two weeks. And my reactions seem to be different every time. Or have different themes - sometimes it's emotional/painful joints, sometimes it's IBS, sometimes it's bad mood and migraine. I never know what to expect! Around a week seems to be pretty standard.
