If you think the idea of seeing a dog chow down on wheat is funny, how about the idea of a cat racing after a... cow? Can you see a housecat taking down a cow and chomping away? I always think that's so funny... Maybe some gang of cats getting together and plotting out how to get Bessie! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Actually, I look at my furry orange tabby and...

I totally get the paranoia about being this sensitive. I have been having ongoing stomach problems for the last couple of months and have been trying to figure out why. My latest is that my husband got these gluteny cat treats he gives the cat while lying in bed. Though he, at my insistance, doesn't pet the cat after, doesn't wipe his hands on the bed, gets...

ARCHIVED Bloodwork Negative, Still Welcome?
skbird replied to Mjohnson73's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Maya - What everyone above me said! I didn't even have officially positive test results from EnteroLab but I get sick as a dog from gluten so it's worth my while to stick to it. Stick around! This envirnoment totally helps people to feel better and more in charge of their lives. Stephanie -
ARCHIVED I Figured Out My "gluten" Source! :)
skbird replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, that's me, I'm big in gluten circles in my little town! I had a great talk with the restaurant owner yesterday and he is very excited about my experiences with food and I think his mind is trying to find a way to get me into his business. He's got bigger goals than just this local restaurant, and the second he's opening, currently. He wants to... -
Just wanted to mention I found out the hard way that Tums have gluten in them, when I was trying to deal with some acid reflux of my own about a month ago. Took me two weeks to get over the sickness 4 Tums caused me. Stephanie

ARCHIVED I Figured Out My "gluten" Source! :)
skbird replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I went to my favorite lunch place today and handed them a slip printed out with exactly how I wanted my food and it was awesome! The owner came over to say hi and we're talking about having me write up a bunch of info on gluten free for the employee training manual, and for his future restaurants (he's opening up another in town right now). here's what... -
ARCHIVED Question About Chewing Gum...
skbird replied to sweetp's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The only time I ever got "addicted" to gum was when I first went low carb - I chewed gum for the sweetness and didn't think much about it. I was chewing Orbit peppermint. I would actually get cranky if I didn't have my gum at the same times every day, which were increasing all the time. I was beginning to chew about 8-10 pieces a day! Then my lips and tongue... -
Hi Judi - I got tested through EnteroLab and found out I don't have either of the two widely accepted Celiac genes but I do have two genes that have been connected to gluten intolerance - one is DQ1, 6 (or DQ6) and the other is DQ3, 9 (or DQ9). The DQ1 gene has been connected in studies with gluten intolerance other than Celiac, including microscopic...

Another reason I'm glad to go back to Science Diet - the local feed store sells it, but not Eukanuba (or however it's spelled) - only found in my area at Petco. Stephanie

Beverly - people *tell* me I should be in a bubble! All the freakin' time! We laugh because it's sort of funny... About nightshade veggies - here's the list: potatoes (90% of the offending part is in the skin) tomatoes, including tomatillos bell peppers - all colors spicy peppers (jalepeños, peppericinis, cayenne) eggplant tobacco kava kava paprika ... -
ARCHIVED Can Celiac Disease Cause Frequent Headaches? Help!
skbird replied to deejay's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My daily migraines dissappeared when I went gluten free. I do still get them but only when I'm having stomach problems or I eat gluten by accident - it's a good tip off for me. Migraines are no fun! Have you had a biopsy yet? If you think you'll have one, don't go gluten free yet. And if you decide you don't care to have one, then go for it. I didn't have... -
I get gluten free food for the cats and have just switched the dogs. We mistakenly got some gluten cat treats recently so my husband gets to feed those, and doesn't get to wipe his hand on the cat by petting him after - because I am all over that cat, he's got long orange fur and I just love him to pieces!!! (yes, I kiss him, etc, gross, I know... ) Cats...

ARCHIVED Could I Have Diabetes? Hypoglycemia?
skbird replied to ruddabega's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hey Camila - So, you're in Dixon - I've been there. I'm in Chico, the other side of Sac, but still pracitically neighbors! I'm hypoglycemic and it was by following a low carb diet that I found out I was also gluten intolerant. It does sound like you are following a good diet at this point for either hypoglycemia or diabetes, how much rice are... -

You can tell Michelle/Bean is on vacation because she'd join the Tropicana rant! Out of protest I won't even buy their gluten free juices now. Beverly - I just saw that article the other day, too. It's a good one, finally there is awareness building about nightshades. I "figured it out" 6 years ago. There is no really coherent way I did this, but an... -
Kimberly - I love the doughnut story! My mom always says the reason she had me is because one day, in the market, she had to decide between buying birth control pills and artichokes, which were on special. She chose the artichokes. Must be genetic - I can't stand birth control pills and I love, LOVE artichokes! Stephanie

ARCHIVED Question About Chewing Gum...
skbird replied to sweetp's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Xylitol is fine - in fact many gums have xylitol, also toothpaste. My favorite is Xylichew which uses xylitol, not sugar or artificial sweeteners to sweeten it. But I emailed them and they couldn't confirm one way or another if it has gluten in it. I will chew it sometimes but it does seem at times I may be having a reaction. I had bad reactions to aspertame... -
I just wanted to point out I was actually diagnosed as bipolar and on Social Security at the glorious age of 24 - now I'm 34 and since being off gluten, I have been the nicest and mellowest I've ever been. I have one of the neurological gluten genes - I think that has a lot to do with my changes. I'm pretty sure my dad has the same problems, but he won't...

I've thought about going grain free, and if I needed to bake something, I'd use tapioca or buckwheat (as it's a fruit). If tapioca works for you, then you have some options. For example, Chebe bread mixes use tapioca only (also known as manioc). Also, the bean flour route is a good suggestion. I hope you can find something that works for you! Stephanie

ARCHIVED What's Your Worst Cross-contamination Story?
skbird replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, I hope this isn't too off-topic but I thought I'd post two short stories of when I got nightshade-sick from contamination, I get sick the same way from nightshades that I do from gluten. (and I don't have any clever or weird stories about gluten, YET!) #1 - I was at a party in the kitchen helping the hostess - she was chopping up tomatoes and habenero... -
This is absolutely me! When I get any gluten I go into rages/tears/depression/being nuts. I will go off my nut. I didn't even realize how weird this was until I stopped doing it, now it starts and I forget at first that it's weird, then realize I must have been glutened or whatever (I have a few food problems) and then I do my best to keep it under wraps...

ARCHIVED Gluten-free?
skbird replied to YankeeDB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was concerned about the rice malt in Mrs. Mays when I first saw it - why doesn't it say gluten free on the bag, just wheat free? But their web site says gluten free and an email I got from the company said they are gluten free so those are ok... I'm sorry you're having a reaction, I know that's not fun. Stephanie -
ARCHIVED Mary's Gone Crackers
skbird replied to micheleph's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh yeah, I love these - I get the original, too. They were recently on sale for $2.50 a box so I bought 6. I haven't had a problem with them. Maybe it's something else in them? Sorry! That is not fun. Stephanie -
I use Seventh Generation laundry products with no ill affects - I have read on lists before they are gluten free. I love the lavendar scent! I could absolutely see how accupuncture could help with the symptoms. I have had accupuncture for a dog bite and my back but my seasonal allergies were much improved, as well. STephanie

ARCHIVED Diagnosis Confusion
skbird replied to jaxonweb's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There is more to gluten intolerance than intestinal damage/enteropathy. I have all the stomach/gut reactions but no malabsorption, no Celiac gene, but I do have other obvious gluten intolerance symptoms. There is also neurological presenting gluten intolerance. It's also possible the doctor didn't take enough samples when he did the endoscopy. That... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Vs. Blood Test/blood Test Ranges
skbird replied to GFG's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! I wanted to respond the the differences between gluten intolerance, sensitivity and Celiac. Basically, gluten intolerance (at least measurable by labs) is the big picture and Celiac is part of that. Celiac is the most well-known gluten intolerance, and then there is dermatitis hepetiformis, which affects the skin. Some people are both Celiac and DH. There...
