  1. Wow, what a great opportunity! Let us know how it goes and what you end up doing. Definitely cross contamination. Things I hypothetically think about at diners are - can my eggs be prepared in their own pan, not the griddle where the pancakes are? Is the bacon gluten free? Is there a mix used for omlettes and scrambles, and does that egg mix use gluten...
  2. Bonnie - I have a similar experience. I used to drink quite a bit, anywhere from one to 8 drinks in a day/evening. I used to be able to tolerate it pretty well. When I went on a low carb diet nearly 4 years back I started losing my ability to drink alcohol. At this point I can't drink 2 ounces of wine without having a hangover. My husband, who has no known...
  3. Should be gluten free, however, it is a nightshade, like peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes so if you have a problem with those, it will affect you (it does me!) Stephanie
  4. Ahhhh, living on Gas-X. I had a yard sale last weekend and was going through old porses, etc, to sell, and kept finding all these gas-x and other anti-gas pills stashed (and in some, Imodium as well!) You don't know when you're sick until when you look back sometimes... Stephanie
  5. Coffee works for me sometimes, doesn't have to be caffeinated. Also, you could look into those Fleet enemas - they are disposable and, well, at some point, ya gotta go, right? I'm sorry magnesium doesn't work for you, that is my secret weapon. Lots of water. Very good because moisture in the gut is what you need to move things along. Is it you can't have...
  6. Cool! FYI for anyone sensitive to aspartame, Doublemint and some other Wrigley gums that are not sugarfree also contain aspartame, to increase the sweetness time. Not all of them, but some do. I was surprised to find that out as I cannot tolerate aspartame, so those gums are now totally out for me. Stephanie
  7. Carrie - do you have any problem with citric acid? I can't eat most of the bagged salads as they are washed in a veggie rinse with citric acid (not listed on the label, BTW, but from experience I know which brands are ok now). I get gastro symptoms as well as migraine and some other reactions, too. My local Outback restaurant uses the stuff, too. Additionally...

    ARCHIVED Saw Gi Doc Today...

You totally scored, Rachel! Cool! That is great after so much time NOT knowing what was going on. Excellent! I hope I have good results when I finally get into a gastro in my town... I'm beginning to roll my eyes because a month after being told I'm being referred, I still don't have an appointment. Sigh. Stephanie
  9. No freakin' kidding on the gluten-free brownies! I was just at my MIL's house (my husband is 17 years older than me, so she seems like my grandma) and she will NEVER get this gluten free business. I brought my own meal, because I knew even if she tried it would still contain gluten. She was sad at the dinner, saying "I thought the beef dish would have been...
  10. Thanks, Kasey's mom - I do too. I'm not used to neck pain. However, when I eat things I'm sensitive to, it seems I get neck pain now. Last night I made banana bread with garbanzo bean flour mix and that might have been a problem for me - I'd cut out garbanzo beans about 3 years ago after reading the Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type diet, and thinking about how...
  11. Lori - I need a medal for the bipolar thing, too. Mothers... (not you, of course! ) It used to get to me but now I don't care anymore, well not very much, just enough to complain about it here. Whatever. Both of my parents are so happy I am so much better (though who would know after the summer I've had! but that's another story...) through diet and...
  12. I can identify with both sides of loving foods. I used to be the most food obsessed person I knew. I love to make food, eat food, dream of food. I was not heavy or anything, was not an overeater, but just loved the romance of it all. When I started having food problems I got depressed. I have had to start eliminating foods for 6 years now. When I lost gluten...
  13. If you want to try something that is NOT LaChoy but also is not fermented (I can't have fermented - it uses aspergillus mold and makes me sick - allergy) then a great choice is Braggs Liquid Aminos. I have gotten funny looks in restaurants and from my brother's fiancée (she is Chinese and a self-admitted soy sauce snob) but even the fiancée has admitted t...
  14. OK, here's MY sob story - my mom still refers to my being bipolar, or tells me about her friends who have kids who just found out they are bipolar, or the star in this film - did you know he's bipolar? or she just read a book about someone who is... bipolar. I was diagnosed bipolar about 12 years ago, was treated for it for two years before learning I...
  15. I have been having puzzling pain myself lately, in my shoulder and today I woke and my neck hurts, too. It's like I was at a concert and did a little too much rocking out or landed in the pit or something. But I didn't do anything like that all weekend. I went to my favorite nurse practitioner this weekend at the walk in clinic and we caught up on all the...
  16. I don't know, interesting hypothesis. I know that when I get glutened, most of the time I have a resurgence of depression, anxiety and anger of the likes I have not seen in 10 years, back when I was diagnosed as bipolar (mistakenly). Gluten brings out the worst in me, for sure. I don't take an antidepressant at this point in my life but would probably wonder...
  17. I don't make soups with a roux to start but have been thickening my creamy soups with sweet rice flour. What I do is cook the veggies, etc, in the water/broth, and when they are well cooked and I am about to add the cream I take some sweet rice flour and put it in a sifter and shake it into the soup as I stir. This seems to thicken it nicely. I do make...
  18. Additionally, several of the sprouted grain breads also contain additional gluten to help the grains stick together. Plants don't contain gluten, the seeds do, but sprouts have high contamination issues with unsprouted seeds, etc (like Tiffany said, think of alfalfa sprouts you buy in the store). This is like playing with fire. Not worth the risk. For...
  19. Or potato-free? Oh well, I guess I need to find out if the Sacramento store is getting this in, now, too. I'd heard it would be around October for California stores... worth checking out! Stephanie
  20. Mine are microwaved yams, hot quinoa cereal, eggs, homemade cabbage soup, mint teas, EnerG Light Tapioca toast with butter... There has been some research that cabbage soup is healing to the gut. I'm sorry I don't have a link, but was told this after someone I know went to the GIG meeting this year - they heard a presentation on it. My recipe is pretty...
  21. OK Lori, where's my medal? I try to focus on the positive most of the time but I have had some bad moments where I just am tired of the whole thing. I have been gluten free for 11 months now and this last week I have wanted to pick up my husband's beer more times than I have in the rest of the past 11 months. I can feel it in my mouth, and taste it...
  22. Just so you know, citric acid for the most part does not come from citrus fruits. It is manufactured with molassas and aspergillus mold, or some similar way (always with aspergillus). Here's some info from wikipedia Open Original Shared Link I only caught on after my dad had an allergic reaction to his statin that is derived from another aspergillus...
  23. I get this at In N Out if I eat the lettuce. The lettuce is washed (like veggies in a lot of places, especially the lettuces) in a veggie wash with citric acid and I react to that. It's not a gluten thing, but I think for me an allergy to the mold used to create citric acid (aspergillus niger). Anyway, that's pretty much how I feel, though my stomach usually...
  24. Sounds interesting, but I'd guess you had to feed in the bills one at a time (I'm thinking of a soda machine now) and we all know how much fun that is, when they keep popping back out. Or, what if you have a bunch of bills to put in, and you're standing there forever feeding them in - you'd be more vulnerable... hmmm..... not sure what to think of this. ...
  25. OMG, maybe "Susan" - George Costanza's fiancée on Seinfeld was Celiac! LOL! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Wow, this became an interesting thread over the weekend.... Stephanie
