  1. I'm sorry to hear you were glutened, Carolyn! I hope it doesn't last too long... Stephanie
  2. I get migraines and they are often on one side, usually behind my left eye. I had a really bad one a year ago there and it felt like something the shape of a worm or something was swelling behind my eye, some burning thing that was like a cattle brand or something. It made my neck ache. The worst was the first day when I was pressing my face into ever pillow...
  3. Any chance you can go to a compounding pharmacist? They specialize in formulating drugs without specific fillers, etc, and that might be of help. Though maybe hard to come by dealing with military doctors. Do a search for "compounding pharmacist" and you should find a web site that tells you where the one nearest you is. Best of luck Stephanie
  4. I don't think there's any reason to suspect "virgin" teflon pans, I think the contamination risk is if they are scratched or pocked or even honeycombed (like some I recently used) and that they can harbor gluten - if gluten items have been prepared in them, first. I don't know what to think of this being an urban legend - it seems to me if anything can...
  5. Then you probably read about how I ended up learning a lot from calling a poison control center though that guy was incredulous, too. And I called a gastroenterologist and they said call the allergist so I called the allergist and they said call the gastro. It's a nutty thing, and it was only when I flat out told a doctor that this is what happens that I...
  6. No problem! I forgot about the sharing of the cookware and the kitchens are stocked with decent non-stick stuff, but the kind that has a honeycomb surface, so stuff can easily be stuck in there. But Rite Aid is right up the road and I picked up a $9 frying pan which I used the rest of the time there. And I can't get over Harvest Market - it's the best...
  7. I can appreciate the desire to be vegetarian, I have a hard time eating meat at times, for psychological reasons. But the 3 years I was vegetarian were the sickest three years of my life. I also had really bad cholesterol. It was a weird time. Since learning I am hypoglycemic I have tried to focus more on protein. And as VydorScope pointed out, after going...
  8. Just wanted to mention this place we like to stay on the coast of California when we want a weekend away. The Shoreline Cottages are really well-appointed cottages with full kitchens and a full size bed (there are 7, also there are 4 motel-style rooms with two double beds and a kitchenette instead for the same price). Just a mile up the road is a great market...
  9. I would strongly suspect any doctor thinking a gluten free diet makes one prone to malnourishment is on the wheat industry's payroll. That is ridiculous. Just take a look at this chart which talks about the nutrients in quinoa (a gluten free grain). http://quinoa.net/Nutrition_Facts/a_a_quinoa_nutri.webp Anyway, I initially read your post because you...
  10. I find them at the health food store. The brand I have gotten is Nature's Way. They are gelatin capsules filled with some kind of charcoal. What the charcoal does is cling to toxins and other things (even nutrients so you don't want to take them all the time) in your stomach/digestive system. They kind of buffer what you've eaten. The label says to take ...
  11. Peter - thanks for the info. I have tested myself off and on for the past two or three years now and not really seen anything higher than 135. Usually I am under 100 but I usually eat a low glycemic diet. Once I got the hang of how I feel when I'm going down and got pretty stabilized, I stopped testing very much, probably only once a month. Since gluten free...
  12. One more thought - a decent coping strategy I have discovered is as soon as I eat something with nightshades in it, if I figure it out (usually pretty obvious) I take 8-10 activated charcoal tablets and drink lots of water. My doctor suggested this and it does seem to help. Still get sick sometimes but not as bad as I have. Good thing to keep on hand....
  13. Wow, I'm always excited to see someone mention this because I don't know anyone with this problem, except me. I can't eat any nightshades and have been off of them for 6 years. I used to get so sick from eating rattatouie (tomatoes, peppers and eggplant) that it was unreal. I don't get sick right away, usually, but have within two hours. Usually it's more...
  14. Yeah, Lisa, I'm glad this was an entertaining read. I was worried we were dragging it out, but it was kind of fun, two of us doing the same thing the same day. Well, we both survived, Tiffany! I am still going up and down on the blood sugar scale. Well, mostly down. I wonder about the insulin response to IV sugar, also. I checked every hour after I got...
  15. OK, I'm back! The procedure was hardly noticable but I woke this morning not feeling great so I tested my blood sugar and it was 59 which is low for me. When I got to the center I told them I was having symptoms and low blood sugar and they gave me an IV with glucose solution in it. That helped a lot, also helped with my feeling dehydrated despite all the...
  16. I have been wondering the same thing, about drinking it at 7pm I may be up a while. Oh well, only 16 hours until my appointment. I'm getting pretty used to being hungry now. Though I may have my husband eat in another room tonight, I might not be able to take the sight of it! LOL! The center that conducts the test called and checked to make sure I was...
  17. Thanks, Jen! Tiffany - toothbrushing is ok if you spit it back out, don't swallow. That's what it said in my instructions. This is kind of cracking me up, my updates... Anyway, I have had about half my jello and three bowls of broth. Tastes good but still trying to wrack my brains for anything that I could possibly eat, then I remember, oh...
  18. Hey Tiffany - On my second bowl of broth... I am starving. I have been having the most bizarre food fantasies! I am going to be cooking like you won't believe this weekend. Anyway, getting a lot of reading done... and this really isn't bad, just the hunger part. I didn't read anything about sugar being restricted after the evening dose but don't plan...
  19. OK, first report - I'm halfway through my morning dose of the drink, which is Fleet Phoso-Soda, lemon/ginger flavor dissolved in 24 oz of water. My review is this - it doesn't taste all that bad - I probably won't develop a taste for it, definitely doesn't taste much like either ginger or lemon but it's not unpleasant, like epsom salts would be. I have to...
  20. I knew there was good reason I liked you, Carolyn! You rock, as do all red heads. I was sort of laughing when she told me about throwing-up, because that has been me before, too. I don't know if it's true, in fact my psychologist said maybe it's just because red heads stand out or are more memorable than blondes or brunettes - and certainly they are...
  21. Thanks, I'll report in after the kool-ade does it's "magic". OK, not kool-ade... hahaha (gallows humor). I called the doc to double check but they said yep, 7 am. If I could wait until later I could have worked some tomorrow, but that's the way it works, I guess. I have to go buy the stuff tonight after work... Stephanie
  22. You ask if you could be wrong about it being bad - well, have you ever had epsom salts for constipation? Blech, nasty! Only takes a tbsp of that stuff to make me want to heave. So, who knows, could be horrid. I'm supposed to mix 1/2 bottle into 24 ounces of liquid and then drink 8 oz at 7am, 8oz at 7:10 am, then the last at 7:20 am, then the whole process...
  23. I was told recently that my problems are because I'm a red head. Seriously - the gynecologist nurse practitioner told me that when she worked the hospital recovery room, every time a red head was wheeled out, they would draw straws to see who had to clean up the vomit, which they aparantly always did upon waking up. I have had one surgery like that (broken...
  24. People can have gluten reactions other than just ingesting. Several people on this board have mentioned this happening. I experienced a time in the past where I would get sick when I used tampons, it wasn't TSS because I didn't get a fever or rash but I would definitely have stomach sensations and a feeling of having the flu. My mom had this happen to...
  25. Yeah, can't hack the sugar. It's gonna be broth and sugar free jello for me. I called the nurse yesterday to ask if my husband could attend and she said the room is very small but that I could make sure the doctor talks with him after, not just me. So that might help. Also, said the drug of choice is demerol, plus some amnesiac drug (starts with an "I" but...
