  1. I'm chiming in on the Tums. I wouldn't have known from the label, and only found out after I posted here, but I was getting sick from taking it. Was horrible. Stephanie
  2. Have you had your B12 levels looked at? Many people are B12 deficient and this can present in many neurological ways. If you are deficient, you need to be taking sublingual B12 or getting shots. It can be several months of supplementing before you notice an improvement but people have had many neurological symptoms improve from B12 supplementation. This is...
  3. I can relate. My primary care doc said if avoiding gluten helps, then do it, that's enough for my treatment. He also said I am the most successful on the diet of anyone he's treated. But then I got sent to a rheumatologist because I had an elevated ANA (anti-nuclear antibodies). I liked the rheumy at first, especially because he knew something about gluten...

  5. Dietary challenge, as suggested by my GP, and then I did Enterolab on my own, which was sort of inconclusive but was one point away from being positive, done 5 months after gluten-free and two years of low gluten eating. Diet for me is everything. And at this point, I don't care if I don't have an official diagnosis - I now tell all my new docs that I have...
  6. Thanks on the av... I was getting tired of my big goofy grin. About Whole Foods - d'oh. Well, I have to drive 180 miles to go there anyway (round trip) and now that Trader Joe's is coming to my town, no reason to really do that anymore anyway. Probably has potato starch in it anyway. Talking about fairness (and not) the fact that a good majority of gluten...
  7. You could be deficient if you have Celiac - B12, folic acid, and B6 are often deficient. Also a part of pernicious anemia, which does not refer to iron deficiency anemia. It can be dangerous to be so high on homocystene, can cause heart conditons. A good B12, B6 and folic acid supplement would be a great idea - especially a sublingual one. Stephanie
  8. No problem - it does get confusing. Yes she has double, she has two DQ1 genes (though one is 0602 and the other is 0604, they are both considered DQ1). By the way, this info will help you when talking with Enterolab or on the web, but your doctor will look at you funny, guaranteed. That's just how it is... Stephanie
  9. I was in my local Safeway grocery store the other day looking at bars for a treat. I had gotten a yogurt covered almond and apricot bar before so was looking at that bar made by Be Natural. I looked at the ingredients, saw malt and wheat so thought hmmm, did they change the ingredients? Then I looked down a shelf and saw the Eat Natural yogurt, apricot and...
  10. I definitely don't have any idea of how much it costs to make a loaf of gluten free bread. But I guess between the low-demand flours, the process of having a dedicated facility, special storage (most seem to require being refrigerated), and limited distribution, I am certainly not surprised they cost more than regular ones. How much more is something I can...
  11. Hi Shannon - 0602 and 0604 are also known as DQ1, subtype 6. They are two slightly different genes, but are both classified as the same. I have 0602, I also have 0303 (which is only slightly different from 0302, which is also known as DQ3, subtype 8, or DQ8 for short - the other main Celiac gene). As of yet, I haven't seen anyone mention they only have...
  12. I feel your pain, Jen. My unsurance (intentional) is like this - first $500 is covered, then the next $5,000 is not. Great plan for most fairly healthy folks, and will save you from bankruptcy if you get in a car wreck, but for people like me, who keep getting sent from GP, to Rheumy, to Gyne, to GI - it sucks. Nevermind the Chiropractor... or the psychologist...
  13. Oh wow, and no potato? Cool! That's awesome! I love snickerdoodles, too.... Stephanie
  14. Good idea, Vydor... When it's been a while since I've had a reaction, I start wondering if I really have a problem. Then I'll get glutened and remember EVERY DETAIL and think WHY would I ever question that??? But I still do... Good to have it down in writing. Stephanie
  15. I don't know, it might not be fair that the prices are higher but then again, is it fair that we have to limit our diets, either? And is it fair that my migraine pills cost $16 each? I guess the "fair" argument doesn't hold a lot of weight with me - things aren't fair. I'm no fan of meat roll-ups, either. Unless deli meats are hidden in lettuce, onion...

    ARCHIVED Applebees

My experience is that I had a very nice waitress who brought an assistant manager over who was also nice. We consulted, decided on a steak and steamed veggies, then they came back and said the steak had a marinade afterall, so try a plain chicken breast. I gratefully thanked them and had that, the steamed veggies, and asked for some butter to put on the veggies...
  17. Wow, I can't really help you but that is an odd response. I don't know what they're talking about! I've never heard of that, unless they use some form of gluten to begin with. Sorry. Stephanie
  18. That's interesting, because for me, whenever I take supplements that supplement estrogen, I have blood sugar crashes. When I supplement with progesterone, I have fewer crashes, if any. Progesterone is supposed to dominate from ovulation on, with estrogen building before that. So that would fit with your symptoms, too. Sometimes it seems like everything...
  19. Hi - I have one of those genes, DQ1. DQ1 is being seriously looked at as another gene predisposing one to Celiac. It also has been identified as predisposing one to microscopic colitis as well as autoimmune gluten intolerance, especially with neurological symptoms (gluten ataxia for one). Definitely have her keep following the diet, since she shows...
  20. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That totally made me laugh! I'm with you on this one... Ehhxxxcellent..... I have wondered about this condition, too, because I get chest pains. I have what I was beginning to think were pleurisy pains, mainly on the left side. But the rheumatologist didn't think much of them. I also have a pain on my lower left side...
  21. Brenda - your readings sound similar to mine. While 69 on it's own isn't particularly low, if it was 90 15 mins before or something (I'm hypothesizing) then you would feel the effects. A lot of the time when people have hypoglycemic episodes, they don't see that in their blood sugar results, because they test when they feel bad (which is usually when your...
  22. I feel I have a pretty good handle on food allergies versus sensitivities at this point but still feel confused by some of the reactions I have. For example I started craving corn all the time, then after a while I started having hangover reactions when I ate corn. Then I dropped it from my diet, and now the last two times I have had corn (corn chips) I have...
  23. I don't want birth control either - had a grandma with breast and uterine cancer, and the other had cervical and colon cancer. I was on the pill for 13 years but these four years off it have not been fun, either. Birth control looks like a better option than lupron, etc, which are even stronger hormone-influencing treatments. At least this ring gets directly...
  24. I've been trying to get my brother tested because we are very similar and have had some of the same anxiety and sugar issues. But he is in the middle of getting married and I don't want to freak him out further or his fiancée (who is being wonderful - she hasn't picked a restaurant yet in SF for their engagement dinner for 30 in part because she wants to ...
  25. Well, I have an ultrasound next week and then on Thurs a consult with a GI for the first time. I'll probably end up having most of that stuff done, scopes and all. I'm ready, I'm not doing well. So far I still have my wits but I am living off of poached eggs, baby rice cereal, and creamed dairy free veggie soups... not fun and still feeling full and bloated...
