I could be wrong, but I think the EnteroLab genetic test on it's own is $95? Not horrible. Yes, DQ1 is highly associated with gluten ataxia. I have both DQ1 and DQ9, which are both associated with non-celiac gluten intolerance and I can tell you the non-celiac part of it doesn't mean it's any less uncomfortable/disruptive/horrible/frustrating, etc. I...

I haven't seen wasabi with wheat, but I have found it with citric acid, which I can't have. I buy the powdered kind which is not true wasabi (true wasabi isn't the most common - there is only one place in the U.S. that actually grows true wasabi, all the rest comes from Japan) but doesn't have citric acid either, which is something I can't have. THe powdered...

Sushi is just about the only place I eat out regularly. I bring my own sauce (Braggs Liquid Aminos, I can't have fermented tamari) and get simple rolls, fish, avocado, asparagus, etc. Last night we went out and for the first time I ordered the eel but when it came out I saw the brown and asked - yep, soy sauce or something in there. So that is a no-no. ...

ARCHIVED Is There Such A Thing As Low Carb Gf Bread
skbird replied to melisadki's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Depending on how low you want to go (on low carb) there is an EnerG brand lite tapioca bread that is sort of low, at least for gluten-free standards. It is 10g carb a slice (no fiber though). I actually like it better than their regular ones. It's good as buttered toast when you are having a bad stomach day. Still, not totally low carb. But I feel ok about... -
ARCHIVED Casein Antibodies
skbird replied to FaithInScienceToo's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have total casein guilt. I tested negative for it from EnteroLab and was eating a ton of cheese/yogurt at the time. But every time I start suspecting something in my diet, I start wondering about dairy. I read all the time that adults are naturally lactose-intolerant, but I don't seem to have that problem myself. I read often on this board about people... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests, Ana Levels
skbird replied to pst424's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had elevated ANA levels - 1:320, nucleolar. I have antibodies to gluten but not Celiac, so autoimmune gluten intolerance. Evidently, ANA can be associated with anything, so unless they are pretty high, it doesn't mean a whole lot. Stephanie -
Wow, LUAP, the potato link is very interesting. When I got sick from touching peppers (was helping a friend who was making salsa - I washed the cutting board under hot soapy water, then wiped my face with my clean hand. My face started to burn from residual pepper juice which I didn't worry about. The next day I was sick with the major headache and stomach...

Good post, Gina. I am not opposed to SSRI's, I just can't take them. For me Paxil induced far more anxiety than I already had. But I am trying to reconcile that not everything in my case may be solved by diet alone. I don't like that idea, but it may be the truth. So it is good to read people presenting both sides of the argument here. Take care and congratulations...

I don't usually get depressed, at least not in the past few years, but the last two weeks I've had hypodepressions where I am suddenly deeply depressed for an hour or few. Sort of like when I am glutened, but I have not been. I think for the most part I am pretty much ok, just the IBS part of the whole thing is really getting to me. Since I made a lot...

Interesting about Ativan - that makes sense. I was on it for two one-year courses before and went through withdrawl both times, not fun. Recently was given Xanax XR which is supposed to last 24 hours and avoid the withdrawl effect. Problem was that xanax is SO addictive. I would take it for three days, in pill a day, and the fourth be feeling agitated without...

As usual, I have been researching this a lot lately, especially in regard to meds. I am wondering if I will be given a mood stabilizer, and I have been looking into the various kinds to find out which *sounds* like the most apropriate for me. I was given depakote in the past and that made me gain 70 pounds. I also was given lithium but no reaction. Depakote...

Hi Luap - I'd buy the leaky gut thing for me if I hadn't already gotten sick from contact and even smell of nightshades (both peppers in these cases, and the smell was from them cooking on the BBQ and the smoke blowing my way). Can't see how leaky gut would have allowed for that. I wish that was what it was! I can solve that. As for Mr. J and the skin...

I switched my dogs and cats foods and I can't tell you how many times now when I pet my dog or kiss my cat and get the dust from their food on my lips/hand/face that I am thankful I don't have to worry about there being gluten in it. I was getting sick from the glutenous cat treats my husband was feeding the cat for a while there. Now I don't have to worry...

ARCHIVED Just Got Back From My Endoscopy
skbird replied to bellybattle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was pretty alert, too, but not very hungry as I had a blood sugar problem during the whole thing. That did make me tired in the end. They didn't see anything, except a polyp, and then when the biopsy came back everything was fine. I was really surprised they didn't notice any inflammation at all because I had a pretty upset system at the time. Goes to show... -
Interesting - well if lymphomas are genetic and Celiac is genetic, maybe they are related on that level? So possibly not caused by Celiac but genetically predisposed to both? Or people who have both in their family are just doubly unlucky? Interesting... Stephanie

ARCHIVED Reliv? (a Nutritional Food)
skbird replied to nettiebeads's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
OK, I'm trying to put this tactfully, but remember they are distributors, which means they make money off selling it. Please be careful there. You can't have barley, you know that, and you also know it's autoimmune so it's not going to go away. I'm sorry, that must be awkward. Take care Stephanie -
<totally off-topic> Hey Ms Sillyak - I hadn't read this thread again for a while... I"m very sorry to read about your aunt. My heart goes out to you. I have read before about lectins and keep trying to decide what to think about those. Dairy, which is so suspect for so many, doesn't ever seem to be my problem. I always wonder if I am deluding...

ARCHIVED Response From Enterolab
skbird replied to alanalynch's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My two cents - I think Enterolab is great for what they are doing. But I got tested at 5 months and was just under the normal cutoff (9, when 10 is positive). When corresponding with Phyllis and Dr. Fine, they both inferred I was likely over the normal limit before going gluten-free, but who knows? Anyway, it is possible your levels will have gone down by... -
I would have answered this differently a few months ago, but I have been having major IBS stuff again and now that I have had an endoscopy and colonoscopy while in the midst of having uncomfortable IBS and they've seen nothing, not even inflammation, I really don't know. I have eliminated many foods from my diet and don't believe any of the remaining foods...

OK, this is quick and dirty, but found this list and while I have troubles to varying degrees with some of these, they are not similar to my nightshade reaction so I think for me phenols are not the culprit: I do have some issues with most of these, actually, but not to the same extent. So phenols may be a problem for me, but don't explain the nightshade...

Thanks for the tip, Mr. J. I am always looking for clues on this one, I'm like Nancy Drew... I'll look it up. Stephanie

ARCHIVED Namaste Blondie Mix
skbird replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love Namaste products, too. They taste great and are potato free which is huge for me. The pizza crust is the first thing I tried, the muffins are good (they also have sugar free ones so you can make savory muffins) and the cakes are pretty good. The white cake looked like banana cake, for some reaon and some even thought that was what it was, though... -
Well, my Nuvaring lasted all of a week. Three reasons - #1 started having manic feelings and racing thoughts. not fun. #2 sex drive dropped to basically zero in about two days. #3 could feel it pinching during sex. This latest news to my docs has them re-thinking an earlier diagnosis of bipolar for me - aparantly there is a big correlation between...

ARCHIVED Liquid Stevia Gf?
skbird replied to Rachel--24's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think I like the taste of the liquid stevias the best. I can't remember which brand, maybe it's sweet leaf that I currently am using. As for baking, it doesn't have bulk so you need to add something else. You can get stevia that is mixed with other fillers, such as the kind they put in the individual packets Vydor mentioned - those are usually stronger...
