No kidding! One thing that keeps coming up for one of my genes is narcolepsy. Funny, I definitely don't have that... so not everything correlated (however highly) with genes is something you will be afflicted with. But both of my genes are correlated with cervical cancer, fun. Also, both are associated with lupus and other connective tissue diseases. That... -
Wow, good suggestions. I'd have to not use the finger version though, because I know I wouldn't remember to wash it off first. I actually had a gluten dream last night about licking an envelope!!! I was just thinking today the by-product of NOT licking those envelopes is no more papercuts on my tongue. Those are not fun! Thanks! Stephanie

OK, here's a question I haven't seen addressed. I just got a new bank account - my old one is a credit union (which I kept) but doesn't have their own ATM. So deposits are made in person. My new bank has plenty of ATMs. I was excited about not having to race to the bank while it was open to deposit checks when I suddenly remembered, gee, how do I seal the...

Wow, thanks for the info. That sounds really intense, but I can understand. I'll do some research on that. Though the rough 6 months is pretty daunting. Good to know what options exist out there. Thanks! Stephanie -
I dreamed about three nights ago I was guzzling a beer - I haven't had one in like three years... I always realize too late in my dreams. My husband says it's too bad I can't even enjoy myself in my dreams! Stephanie

Yeah, you know how you put up with things when you're in love but at some point you start thinking, ok, that is down-right weird. I think he had a dysfunctional family so it was probably nice to hide out in the bathroom, but as an adult? Uh... time to get over it... I have a friend in England who is opening up an internet store selling specialty bathroom... -

Rachel - I go through the doubt part a lot, even at this point (nearly 11 months gluten-free). Or even about other foods I have problems with. I think it goes in waves, as I accept it. I'll have bad moments and doubting moments, then I'll get glutened or react to something and it will nail it home. I'll even think there's no way I could ever doubt this again... -

Same here. Really, even his farts are worse. What's up with *some* men??? I think it's the beer. Man, I may need to change my avatar *again*! HAHAHA! Bathroom time is a good time for a chat? Well, they know what they're in for, I guess that's ok. I used to have a boyfriend, who, as an adult, would lock himself in the bathroom with action figures for... -

I have a cast iron pan - an Aebleskiver pan from my mom and dad (they got it for their wedding) and really want to use it again. For those who don't know, it's a pan with like 9 semi-circle depressions in it and you pour batter in halfway, put in a spoon of applesauce, then pour more batter to cover, cook, turn them over, and have a ball-shaped treat you... -

I honestly didn't think anything in this thead could shock me but I read the part about poop in jars and I quickly sat back in my chair and my jaw dropped! Wow! Now that's poop-obsessed! Not fond of the orange stuff. I don't think I've seen that before. I keep wracking my brains - did I have carrot juice recently? No... I did have some butternut squash... -
ARCHIVED How Sensitive Are You To Gluten?
skbird replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I haven't tried distilled grains, though I may have had some vinegar that fits this category. I have weird vinegar reactions, sometimes it's not good sometimes no problem. I think I was getting sick this summer because my husband feeds the cat treats that had gluten in them, while lying on the bed. After I asked if he could either not do this, or get up,... -

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not crazy about it and only have in front of my husband when there's no option, but he doesn't seem to have a problem going in front of me! But he usually waits until I get in the shower, which gives some semblance of privacy. I have been having bad IBS for about 3 weeks now, mainly constipation, and... -
I was still having problems with protein style burgers there but then found out I am sensitive to citric acid and the wash they use on the lettuce must contain it because I now order it "Flying Dutchman" with onion (Flying Dutchman is two patties with cheese between, that's it) and I haven't had a problem. I haven't asked about the lettuce wash there but...

Hi Jen - is that Living Without article online? I may have seen a similar one. I have noticed three articles recently on the web about nightshades, I wonder if awareness about intolerance of them is finally coming out? Mary Jane - I take turmeric, 900mg a day (well, not the last week for some reason) and it seems to help with various things, including... -
ARCHIVED Tofutti Better Than Cream Cheese
skbird replied to Billygoat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I haven't had a problem with it. It's the best fake cream cheese I've tried - almost made me ok with being dairy free for a month. I was disappointed their garlic one has trans-fat in it though - health food producers should know better than to use hydrogenated oils. Sorry it caused you some problems. I have foods like that - logically on paper they look... -

For me, the cramps I feel in my legs aren't like charlie horses, more like a dull ache that starts in my low back and pelvic region, travels down the front of my thighs and continues down to my ankles. I have been telling my husband about this for ages, he gives me really good ankle rubs when I'm having this problem. I was reading about endometriosis the... -
ARCHIVED Greens Plus Superfood Supplement Gluten-free?
skbird replied to em2005's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The problem with these is that there can be seeds that get in the sprout mix that are unsprouted and can contaminate the juice. There is mixed opinion on this but I won't go near them either. Additionally, the bit about "mucus-creating" - our problem with gluten is not that it creates mucus, but that it causes an autoimmune reaction in our bodies. Many people... -

I get spasm, cramping and constipation or other IBS symptoms starting at ovulation. That is what is making me wonder about endometriosis, that plus the horrible cramps I get as well (down my legs even!) and other problems. The weirdness with my bladder lately is what's really getting on my nerves. Really glad I'm going in to see a good gynecologist now. ... -
ARCHIVED Is Gf Really Enough? What About Leaky Gut Syndrome

Interesting list of botanical families of foods. I have been reading now about Oral Allergy Syndrome - and that these are fruits and veggies that cause oral itching, etc, but if the foods are cooked they are usually neutralized. Also when they hit your stomach the acids break them down. I am wondering if leaky gut is a problem then these foods proteins can... -

This is something I've been in denial about myself. I am going to a new gyno next month to see if I have endo myself. I have horrible periods, hormone problems relating to my cycle, lots of discomfort, etc. I was reading an IBS site the other day because I get bad IBS these days when I ovulate (as opposed to when my period starts, like most women with this... -

Hi Corrine - I'm curious about this as I have not resolved all my food problems - what is the connection between potatoes and the birch/alder family? I cannot eat any nightshade/solanacea food (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, kava kava, tobacco) but didn't know there was a connection with birch or alder. Or is your daughter also simply intolerant to... -
ARCHIVED Oatmeal Substitute?
skbird replied to gymnastjlf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think Quinoa Flakes is my favorite. It doesn't taste that much like oats but it is similar in texture, sort of, or at least the closest I've found. I eat it for breakfast a lot - one plus (over rice cereal) is that it doesn't bubble over in the bowl in the microwave and takes just 90 secs to 2 mins to make (rice seems to take 3 or so and I have to watch...
