  1. I tend to have more airborne mold allergies than pollen so my allergies are usually worse in fall, and I sometimes have problems in libraries and used book stores. I am 95% sure I am allergic to a mold called aspergillus which on it's own can do bad things but is used "safely" in foods like fermented soy/tamari, miso, tofu, seitan, and is used to make the...
  2. Which newsletter? All the ones I've eaten are gluten free, have no gluten in the ingredients, and say gluten free on the label. I've also never reacted to any of those I've eaten, and I'm a pretty sensitive reactor. Curious... Stephanie
  3. Oh, and on the subject of the antispasmodic with valium - I take on occasion generic Librax, which is librium and an antispasmodic. I told my doc I wish it didn't have the librium in it because it makes me feel hungover, but he said it helps make it work. I don't know if that's because it calms you down or it actually calms down the gut. Whatever. It does...
  4. OK, you officially won - first person to make me laugh out loud today!!! See? I don't need no stinking SSRIs... That was awesome. Stephanie

    ARCHIVED Shingles?

I got shingles when I was 18 and it was not pleasant nor any walk in the park. I had a pink blotch on my spine at waist level and one on my side and I went to the campus doc and he said "oh, shingles! Take some tylenol and get some calamime lotion - you'll be fine." Two days later I was back in tears and they gave me some codeine. It was rough. Two days after...
  6. Oh yeah, I've cried. And been mad and frustrated and stomped my foot (like Frenchie Mama) and all that stuff. Especially when I have been glutened, I go nuts then. I was bawling on the street corner recently, after smelling some food I couldn't eat. My solution last year for stuffing for Thanksgiving was to make a wild rice stuffing. I have heard of cornbread...
  7. Thanks Yvonne. We've been married for 6 years and I have seen him "quit" before but is has been half-hearted attempts. But there is something different about it this time. I see in him what I see in me when I have to stop eating something I love - a determination to figure out how to live without it and move on to a healthier life. We'll see, and I'm not...
  8. I have read conflicting opinions on this quite frequently. I know that not all my gluten problems are stomach related so I don't think it has to reach my gut for me to have a reaction. Many of my problems are neurological. I have a non-allergic but toxic reaction to peppers and tomatoes, and have gotten sick from inhaling them or touching them, so I can believe...
  9. Rachel - we should form a club, the "I survived SSRI's" club! Geez, what an annoyance... why can't they get it through their thick skulls that anti-depressants aren't the end-all be-all of cures??? Blah. Depresses me just thinking about it... Stephanie

ARCHIVED Dr. Thinks Everything Is Ibs

I have read on this forum (or maybe another) about people going to the ER for pain. If you are diagnosed formally with Celiac, you may get some kind of treatment there, or maybe not, sounds iffy. Anyway, some have gotten iv's with anti-nausea and narcotic pain relievers. Some say having just a saline drip has helped some, especially if they can't stomach...
  11. I was skittish about eating it at first, too. Still feels like a guilty pleasure. Around my parts (northern california) the label no longer says rye... Stephanie
  12. I've heard of Aldi's but it was in Germany... not the US... (they don't have them on the west coast of the US) *rumor alert* I've read they are related to Trader Joe's.... but that TJ's doesn't advertise this fact because Aldi's is more of a discount place and TJ's, though it is fairly inexpensive, wants to appeal to a different demographic. I read this...
  13. I have been asking myself a similar question, but about fermented products. I seem to do ok on vinegars though, so it's just some fermented products. I have been uninterested in yogurt for quite some time now (3 months?) which I was eating daily. Then I had a bad stomach episode, either gluten or allergy reaction, and I haven't been able to tolerate it since...
  14. I always read the label - bacon has a ton of ingredients, seasonings, natural smoke flavor, msg, sugar, etc etc etc. Gross! I usually get the organic stuff at my store - Coleman's makes one that is nitrate free... I did have to ask a butcher once when were getting some of that thick stuff they have in the meat counter - he had to go into the walk-in, get...
  15. Trader Joe's brand mayo uses cider vinegar. It's my favorite. I used to love Best Foods but then they ruined it by adding sugar... blech! Stephanie
  16. No.... don't get *me* started with doctors and their wonderful anti-depressant pills, either! I just wrote on another post about how I was misdiagnosed as bipolar. I remember spending two nights in a "special" hospital after I attempted suicide when I was 23 (I'm 34 now) because I just couldn't get anyone to listen to me, just give me more Zoloft, more Paxil...
  17. I'm one of those who got diagnosed with psychiactric troubles... I was diagnosed as bipolar and was on meds for that for a few years, which made me feel even worse and gain 70 pounds and I even went on social security disability! I can't believe sometimes at how much guilt I felt for being 25 and getting medicare. When all along I was NOT bipolar but gluten...
  18. Yvonne - Well, I think for me it is simply that I am used to giving up indulging in things I formerly liked. Like gluten, like nightshades (all that Mexican and Thai food... I had to give up...) and some sugars. And shellfish - that was really hard. The more I have seen my general well-being improve from eliminating foods, the better I feel about doing it...
  19. It definitely is a label error. They had them printed up and didn't realize they had "rye" listed. I have eaten it many times (after I read on the web) that it is indeed gluten free. I love it, it's probably my favorite Food For Life bread. Open Original Shared Link Stephanie
  20. Hi Kasey's Mom - I have read that nearly all corn in the US is now genetically modified, as is soy. I don't know if that is 80% or more? Anyway, it's pretty tough to find, and the organic stuff that is not genetically modified isn't being wasted on high fructose corn syrup. If I can find a reference I'll post it. I only dabble in corn at this point...
  21. I send my husband this thread because until recently, we were hoping to find some of this so I could drink beer with him (he has decided to quit drinking - today is day 10.... wow!!!!) and this was his response: We had a good laugh about it but I see legal issues in store for this, too. I wonder why this is happening? Foaming and making a mess is...
  22. Also, you can mix real maple syrup with honey, that's really good. Stretches it out a bit. I second Tiffany on the high fructose corn syrup. That stuff (crap!) isn't good for anyone... Stephanie
  23. I've eaten them with no negative effects. I only eat one at a time and not very often as they contain paprika, which is a nightshade (which I can't eat) but evidently not very much. They are the only hot dogs I'll eat at this point - all other ones either have gluten or more paprika in them, and some have msg. I guess I shouldn't complain about not eating...
  24. Hi Kasey's Mom - I wonder if you don't do well with fermented products because of the mold issue? You wrote last week that your daughter reacts to citric acid, but didn't realize it was a mold-based product. Fermented tamari and soy (also miso and tofu) all contain aspergillus, the mold that makes citric acid, though different strains (a. orzae I think, as...
  25. Oh yes, magnesium is the wonder of all wonders. I only found out about that this last year. Here's a suggestion for an online-only supplement - I have tried it and it definitely works, big time. But it tears me up because of the citric acid in it. It's called oxy-powder. You will definitely be going after you take this. It's magnesium with oxygen bound...
