ARCHIVED Losing My Mind
domesticactivist replied to Tame82's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You could also have a biopsy done of the clear skin directly next to the sores you suspect as dermatitis herpitiformis. I'm not sure though, if you have low overall IgA if that means you'd not be able to get a good result. It's worth asking the folks on the dh board. -
ARCHIVED Vision Issue, What Is This?
domesticactivist replied to AVR1962's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm glad it helped! It might be good to tell your opthamologist and other doctors the good news. That way it will be in their mind as a possibility for other patients. -
ARCHIVED 100% Gluten Free And Still Symptomatic
domesticactivist replied to IWannaSammich's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You could have other intolerances as well. For example, damaged villi don't produce lactase as well so you may be lactose intolerant. Soy is another common one. Another thought is you may not be as gluten free as you think you are. I have a post on the blog linked fromy profile called going 100 % gluten free that may help. Are you vigilant about cross contamination... -
No, GAPS does not say gluten is the cause o leaky gut. The causes seem to be complex and varied from what I've read. However GAPS also doesn't claim to make it safe for celiacs to return to a gluten heavy diet. It is my *opinion* that for gluten intolerant and celiac people that the gluten reactions are probably more of a primary cause of problems, and will...

ARCHIVED Do Most Cases Of Celiac Begin By Leaky Gut?
domesticactivist replied to alicewa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
We also are big on GAPS (been on diet since february) and the book is well worth reading. I do think it's important to note that dr natasha campbell mcbride is coming at it from a different starting point (healing her son's autism) rather than starting at celiac. Wehave gotten so much out of the concept of healing leaky gut/gut dysbiosis through a grain... -
ARCHIVED Diabetes And Celiac Questions....
domesticactivist replied to Michele G's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not diabetic but have always had trouble regulating blood sugar. Since going on the gaps diet, which is grain free and also fruit free at first, I have had much better stability in my blood sugar. Reintroducing fruit threw me for a loop but I seem to have finally got the message of moderation and balancing it out with protein and fat, which helps. -
ARCHIVED How Do You Forgive Yourself?
domesticactivist replied to newmom07's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son had horrible 'hay fever' (with pos scratch test for most grasses, trees, and weeds). About 2 weeks after cutting out corn his hay fever was gone. Maybe 1% symptoms! (we'd already cut out gluten for a couple months). A positive IgE for corn on an elisa test tipped us off. As for forgiving yourself, it's hard but just focus on moving forward. There... -
ARCHIVED Why Are People So Insensitive?
domesticactivist replied to espresso261's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Honestly I'm way more annoyed by people who try to bend over backwards to feed us. We aren't going to trust it so it's just awkward. People say stuff without thinking, too. Just last week a teacher who has been very good about preventing cc for my son and others in the class said "I could never be gluten-free because half my diet is bread. I love it too much... -
ARCHIVED Frequent Urination
domesticactivist replied to o2guy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have you been tested for diabetes or a uti? That would be my first step. Also, have you made other dietary changes besides the gluten? -
You might get a lot out of the GAPS book. It is all about restoring a good gut flora balance and healing leaky guts. However, I do think a lot of healing can be done, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to reintroduce gluten. In many cases I think the gluten may be the root cause of the damage which leads to leaky guts. All the people I know who have healed...

ARCHIVED Parties And Fruit Trays, Etc
domesticactivist replied to samuella's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You said doctors wouldn't intentionally damage patients for testing but actually that's exactly the point of a gluten challenge. The only diagnosis for celiac is to observe damage. Even the blood work is indicative of the antibodies that are doing damage. The goal of a challenge is to create enough damage so that it will be observable. I agree that you... -
ARCHIVED Joint Pain...from Gluten Or Just Growing Pains?
domesticactivist replied to salexander421's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We were told our son's joint and bone pain was growing pains or transient pain so not to worry. It was after fluid filled his hip and he had surgery at 10 that we correlated it to gluten. He has grown tons since then... Without pain! If the pain is there when she is exposed to gluten and resolves after a period of really being gluten free, I'd say it's the... -

On a hunch I googled light sensitivity and cod liver oil. It looks like a potentially promising connection. We use green pastures fermented cod liver oil. -

ARCHIVED New Here
domesticactivist replied to Tracy0504's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It sounds like you are ready to try the diet, tests be damned. So really go for it. One possibility with gluten-free making you feel worse is that you may not be 100% gluten free yet. Are you aware of cross contamination issues? I have a post on the blog linked from my profile and there are tons of threads on here about it. Like others said, stay away from... -
ARCHIVED Tinnitus And Balance Problems/mild Vertigo
domesticactivist replied to Pegleg84's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It doesn't seem like this is your problem but for others who may be reading - check into medications. I uses to take Valtrex occasionally, and I was fine with it for several years, then it started giving me vertigo to the point I had to lie still in bed (dizzy, buzzing) or get the serious spins (falling if i tried to walk, nausea and vomiting if i moved... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Testing
domesticactivist replied to Glutenfree4LJS's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Kimball is a division of labcorp and does give all the info. They just send a summary, but once you get it you can call the genetic councilor and they will send the full results. -
ARCHIVED Need Help With Genetics Interpretation
domesticactivist posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My kids both had genetic testing done a while ago and I'm revisiting the results. I'm wondering what they imply for my own genetics. We can't afford to have me tested, and I can't do the blood tests since I've been gluten-free for nearly a year. Bear in mind, the kids have different biological fathers (whose genetic info is inaccessible). DQA1 ... -
ARCHIVED Weight Loss Healthy?
domesticactivist replied to swcom120's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I dropped over twenty lbs immediately, hit my pre-baby weight, (from 13 years prior) and then stabilized. My body just found a new equilibrium. That could be all that is going on, or it could be other issues. It wouldnt hurt to check it out, especially if other new symptoms are involved. -

ARCHIVED Need Help Coping With Yet More Food Allergies
domesticactivist replied to pocoloco's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
It might help to make a list of things you CAN eat and focus on what you can do with those, rather than having to think of how to modify dishes. An aside... we travel on GAPS regularly (and are very strict about gluten cc as well, of course) and go share meals with people who don't get it at all on a regular basis. We bring our own food and basic cooking... -
