ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Stink?
domesticactivist replied to domesticactivist's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm sorry you have felt that way, too, but am glad it's not just me. That's a good point about the sugar. I've been eating cream of wheat, bread, and pasta. It's been very hard to get the full 20 grams a day. I used to eat way more than that, though! I was worried about trying to basically eat 20 grams of sprinkled gluten but maybe that would be easier than... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Stink?
domesticactivist replied to domesticactivist's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah, the issues need work and rationally I know non celiac intolerance can be even more serious than celiac in some cases. It's easy to take it seriously for others, but I have a hard time taking myself seriously. -

Good point about the charcoal... I guess it's just going to have to be for those days when I really want to make a good impression My partner also pointed out that digestive enzymes might reduce the amount of damage being done, which might defeat the purpose of a gluten challenge. I think I'll give the breath assure a try, I've never used things like... -

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Stink?

So I am a couple weeks into a gluten challenge after a year of being gluten free and 9 months of GAPS. By changing my diet, I had eliminated what had become terrible chronic bad breath, BO, and gas. Uncultured dairy causes it and gluten causes it, I know that for sure. I am trying to do the challenge for at least two months but this is so embarrassing. Does... -
ARCHIVED GAPS Diet For The Poor?
domesticactivist replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Like Skylark says, read the book, or the links that she posted. (My blog is one of them ) GAPS is doable, but it takes really wrapping your mind around a new way of approaching food. Even on the intro there is some variety, and on the full GAPS you don't eat grains or anything similar. In the GAPS book, quinoa and buckwheat are the first pseudo grains she... -
ARCHIVED Grain Fed Meats
domesticactivist replied to kathrynk's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Glad to hear digestion isn't part of your current issues! As for the rest, it seems to me the fat is important to healing neurological issues. Myelin is made primarily of fat, after all. I also had a horrible time kicking sugar and starch - I'd say it took me nearly three months to not feel addicted any more. Staying completely away from it was key for... -
ARCHIVED Did Your Partner Support You ..........
domesticactivist replied to lucylooo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think it's pretty normal for a lot of people's partners to be skeptical and take some time to adjust to any kind of change. Have you told him that you feel that you need support in dealing with your diagnosis? Have you told him what specific things he can do to help you feel supported? Have you told him that you've been feeling like a burden? It could be... -
ARCHIVED GAPS Diet For The Poor?
domesticactivist replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Just curious - have you tried homemade sauerkraut that is crunchy and sour, or drained, homemade, full fat yogurt? I hated both sauerkraut and yogurt before trying the homemade versions. I still can't stand yogurt if it isn't just perfect. The flavor can vary greatly. Another thing is, you can do the diet without sauerkraut. The important thing is to have... -
ARCHIVED No Symptoms Suddenly?
domesticactivist replied to tehjrow's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Anecdotally, I am doing a gluten challenge after a year gluten free and then on GAPS and am having 20 g of gluten a day... My son is has severe gluten problems soI went gluten-free in solidarity but now want to get tested. At first I had no symptoms but a bit over a week in and they are starting to pile up. It could be that it hasn't hit yet or added up to... -
ARCHIVED Eggs Eggs !
domesticactivist replied to surfer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Eggs are a very common allergen and intolerance. I want to put it out there that I've found I can eat eggs from hens that have not been fed soy and corn, but eggs fed on soy are a problem for me. Duck eggs are fie, too. You might try soy free corn free eggs and see if they are easier on your system. -
ARCHIVED Zeers Website
domesticactivist replied to twe0708's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Not intentionally misleading - that site we can't say offers web hosting and other technical services and the adress you list is legit. But that said it looks like zeers is defunct. -

domesticactivist replied to JudyZ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I wonder about how much sugar you are eating? When I stopped thinking about sugar as just what was in sweets and reevaluated my perspective to see the sugar in all starchy things, fruits, and grains it became so clear that it was a much bigger part of my diet than I had realized. Our family changed to the GAPS diet and while I never struggled with my weight... -
ARCHIVED Grain Fed Meats
domesticactivist replied to kathrynk's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm sorry you aren't feeling better I did notice from a couple other posts that you aren't really following the diet to the letter and didn't spend much time in intro... maybe that could be playing a part in it not working out for you yet? Most people I know who have experienced positive health changes on GAPS have found they needed to go back to intro and... -
ARCHIVED Grain Fed Meats
domesticactivist replied to kathrynk's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't believe the gluten makes it through to the meat. That said, there are lots of good reasons to eat meat that is pastured rather than grain fed. This page gives a nice summary: Open Original Shared Link I have noticed that I react to soy fed eggs and not soy-free, corn-free eggs. This was interesting: Open Original Shared Link It does make me... -
ARCHIVED GAPS Diet For The Poor?
domesticactivist replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I've got to say a couple things re: GAPS - I agree that fruit juice it is too easy to just go crazy on sugar. However, the juicing you do on the GAPS diet is not fruit! You only add fruit in after you've been doing veggies, and then only to add sweet to vegetable juice, I'm not looking at the book, but it's something like under half of the juice can be... -
ARCHIVED Feet- Toes Hurt When I Eat Wheat Flour
domesticactivist replied to MANDOPICKER7's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My son gets bone and joint pain from it, often involving his toes. I'm doing a gluten challenge and have noticed my stiff hands and big toe pain has come back. I'm not sure if it's the gluten or something else, though. -

Yea for beating me to it, Skylark! As for stuff you need, a crock pot, pan, stock pot, knife, canning jars and lids, and cutting board should do it. We use our dehydrator a lot but you can make your own using a box fan and foil. We make our ferments in mason jars - just cover with a dish cloth or use a cabinet to make it dark. We make our yogurt in the... -
ARCHIVED Mouth Symptoms
domesticactivist replied to Beckyb70's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My son used to get canker sores. I thought they were cold sores/herpes but they were inside his mouth, too. He has only gotten them once when glutened since going gluten free a year ago. -
ARCHIVED To Test Or Not To Test?
domesticactivist replied to Omma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
With kids especially I think you should get the diagnosis if you can. They haven't been off gluten long, maybe give it one more week of full gluten and get the blood work done next friday? We took my son off gluten without knowing and there is no way he can go back on for testing. Lucky for us we're homeschoolers, but college and military not accepting... -

I get that you have very valid reasons to be concerned about the trip and not want him to go. I am sorry that I may have given the impression that it seemed you hadn't raised him to be a competent person who could handle himself. That was not my intention or my perception. From your original post, I had the impression that you were debating whether to... -

As for food, he can bring or buy a camp stove and money for food, and he can pack some food in his luggage. Make sure he knows how to cook real food - vegetables, meats. He may be in a poor area, but hopefully they have access to vegetables and meats. That's about all our family eats and it is the healthiest food anyway. You could have him do some research... -

He's almost 18. He's going to be making his own decisions before you know it. This is a chance for him to practice. If you come at it from a "no way" perspective, thinking of all the risks, you can guarantee he won't learn the lessons he needs to learn from it and it will be a power struggle that drives you apart and makes him feel he needs to tough it...
