  1. What's an anonymous member?(As opposed to a 'guest')
  2. Wow,first time. Easy when you know how !Thanks Richard
  3. Testing!
  4. How do you ''Quote'' what somebody's written in a previous post? Thanks in advance!
  5. First of all alot of coeliacs discover that they have a lactose intolerance when they go gluten-free.Have you had food at the weekend with alot of milk? Other food intolerances tend to become more apparent when you go gluten-free. Are you eating out at the weekends? It's always easier to get 'glutened' when eating out. Lastly,it can take quite...
  6. I think alot of people discovered the source of their problems(gluten)through either 'the candida diet' or 'the Atkin's diet'. There would probably be even more coeliacs/gluten intolerants out there if it weren't for these diets!
  7. Yes,my husband definitely had a problem with his balance. After standing he would have to stand and 'sway' for a minute while he waited for the dizzyness and nausea to pass.Sometimes though it would come over him out the blue.My husband compared it to 'almost fainting'. Now that he seems to be recovering on gluten-free diet he hasn't had any spells for...
  8. When my hubbie had his first scope he was told all 'looked' normal, but biopsies showed villous atrophy. However when hubbie had second scope the gastro consultant insisted on doing it himself, and said he could tell immediately his bowel looked like untreated celiac disease. So,-I think it depends if the person doing the scope knows what to look for
  9. I think Drewsant has made some very valid points. Gluten is so entwined in modern day living, how can something everyone eats be bad for you? It's a tricky one to get your head round. My husband was dx 1 year ago. It's only recently that he's come out of denial, after finally seeing a slow but steady improvement in his health. We've had some big rows...
  10. After 11 months gluten-free my husband has found he can't tolerate vodka (or any gluten-free alcohols)very well. I think it is an 'alcohol' thing as opposed to him reacting to the vodka. My theory is that now his villi are starting to heal alot more is being absorbed than he was used to,but it does make his guts ache!
  11. Just curious-what are the symptoms of hyper/hypothyroid? How often do you monitor your levels?
  12. Husband!
  13. It's not just the ladies that get the night sweats! Pre-diagnosis my dh suffered terrible from these, they were bad-he used to have to get up and change and put a towel down on the bed.Soggy pillows-the works. Only gets them occasionally now.
  14. After 11 months gluten-free my dh developed a lactose intolerance. We finally figured it out after he had been eating ice cream.About 1 hr after he was doubled up with the cramps-diarrhea/sweats,exhausted after. He also gets a pounding headache that usually lasts till the next day(no amount of pain killers seem to shift a 'lactose induced headache). He seems...
  15. My personal opinion is that you can't outgrow it. Although your lady has had repeat biopsies that are ok,I would think it'll be a case of 'when', not 'if'. I have come across a man that was dx with coeliac as a child-he was told he'd 'outgrew' it in his teens.Fast forward to his mid thirties and he was seriously ill-and yes bloods and biopsy positive!
  16. Rachel, you are unlikely to get a positive biopsy after three months gluten-free.You would have to do a gluten challenge. The amount of time you have to eat gluten before the biopsy would vary for different docs-but at least 6 weeks. Of course this would mean 'poisoning' yourself for weeks. Many people on this board feel so bad when they eat gluten-they are...
  17. Hi again Calvin, Do you belong to Coeliac uk?I find the handbook they supply helpful sometimes. When in uk,do you get prescription foods? What's you're best supermarket for gluten-free food?,I find Tesco the best, but Sainbury's labelling easier. How easy is it being gluten-free in Spain? This is the first year we haven't gone to Spain for a summer...
  18. Hi Calvin,I live in Essex too and my husband is a coeliac. We are in Dagenham-where are you?
  19. How was your son diagnosed?Did he have a colonoscopy? Ulcerative colitis affects the large intestine-this is usually visible as the scope goes into the large bowel. Coeliac disease only affects the small bowel, not always visible, requiring biopsies for a defintive diagnosis. There are of course antibody blood tests for coeliac too,so maybe you should be...
  20. Hi again Rachel, My husband had a negative (borderline) result for the tTg(He scored a 12) However,as he was still obviously ill he had a biopsy. This showed extensive villous atrophy. My husband is alway's referred to as an 'interesting case' by docs!(He never does anything by the book) So,although rare-it does happen.
  21. Interesting pics! Well it seems according to those photos my husband has'clubbed' fingernails(but he has no lung disease)and 'Terry's ' fingernails(but none of the associated diseases).Even weirder-my husband is called Terry-LOL
  22. What goes around comes around. That's got to be my favourite saying! But seriously,if family can't be bothered to even understand celiac disease-to me that shows a lack of respect for their own health(especially my beer drinking brother in law who already has some symptoms of celiac disease!)
  23. After 6 months of gluten-free my dh was feeling no better,in fact worse! He had no appetite, terrible problems with swallowing, constant sore throat, feet and ankles swelling, achey, foggy head, nausea. He also developed some strange neurological symptoms(dizzyness.muscle weakness so bad he could barely move, clumsiness, balance problems-the list goes on and on...
  24. Jenvan,I think you've hit the nail on the head. It's a lack of 'social skills' that makes family behave like that. It's almost 'anyone who doesn't do as I do is wrong' I can't remember how many times my hubbie has been asked by his brother'do you want a beer?'-sigh His brother says 'oh I couldn't give up beer/bread ever' My husband says'if you were...
  25. Hi Rachel,my husband was dx with celiac disease 10 months ago.The last 10 months have been a game of 'detective work'! With regards to your comment about leaky gut and reactions to gluten-free products,I would say that yes you can! My hubbie annoyingly(I think) does not react to gluten, but he reacts to loads of other things with different symptoms and...
