    ARCHIVED Red Robin

That is exciting news!! I can't wait to go there and try one.
  2. That makes sense. And I do think there are some who have even had an actual diagnosis of celiac disease who have a hard time sticking to the diet and end up cheating. Just like diabetics. My boyfriend is diabetic and he often goes against medical advice because he wants to do whatever he wants. I can see the frustration aimed at people who use the gluten...
  3. Well I am not sure how I should take this post. I haven't been diagnosed with celiac or even gluten intolerance. I found that my intestinal issues (previously diagnosed as IBS) have almost disappeared by avoiding gluten. So I have taken the step of not eating gluten-at great expense and inconvenience to myself I might add. It is worth it to me to not have...
  4. As other posters have mentioned, gluten free eating can be inexpensive, especially if you don't try to replace the gluten containing items with gluten free options (like bread). Potatoes are very inexpensive. Same with rice. Corn tortillas are too, and you can use them for tacos, enchiladas, tostadas and just on the side. Instead of cookies and cakes,...
  5. I have seen protein powders that claim to be lactose free. I don't know the names offhand but the other day I saw one at Target. You could blend your own shake using that.
  6. This thanksgiving is going to be interesting. I am looking forward to it, but I love cooking thanksgiving dinner. The only things I really need to worry about are the stuffing-and I plan on buying gluten free bread for that, and the gravy, which I have always made with flour but now will be making with cornstarch. Everything else I can't imagine I will...
  7. Pizza! And cookies! Tortas (mexican sandwiches made with a yummy french bread type roll). Sandwiches. Gluten free bread is not the same. Neither is gluten free pizza. I made a gluten free pizza the other day that was not bad. It was pretty tasty, and even my son said it tasted good (he is not gluten free). But it doesn't replace gluteny pizza. I...
  8. I didn't know that. Wow. Last year I had surgery and developed a severe blood infection. It was horrible, I almost died. It really is amazing to me how this can affect so many aspects of a person's health.
  9. I have an inexpensive plastic tortilla press. They are super easy to make, but they take a bit of time. So worth it though, they taste so much better than store bought.
  10. I haven't been gluten free for a very long time, maybe 6 months or less? So maybe this will bother me more and more as time goes on, and also I might not be supersensitive so I don't know when I have been a victim of cc? But I have had luck so far. At a recent bbq, I just ate meat, corn on the cob, salad and fruit. I even had a hot dog without the bun....
  11. Vons carries them here. THey are also known as Safeway in other parts. Vons actually is starting to carry a lot of gluten free crackers and cookies.
  12. Schar crackers! I love them. They are a bit brittle but taste wonderful. I like Pamela's chocolate chip cookies, too.
  13. I know exactly what you mean. I took my kids to a local Pizza place that also serves gluten-free pizza and it just was not the same! Pizza is the #1 thing I just can't replace with a gluten free option. HOWEVER, I am too scared to eat gluten filled food. I haven't even been formally diagnosed, but my symptoms are almost completely gone, and I don't want...
  14. I couldn't find it cheap enough - I just don't have the money! So I used a white rice flour that I found in a local market. I could tell by looking at it that it was superfine ground so I took a chance. I used it in her coconut layer cake and that cake was so delicious I couldn't even believe it. I know that it has fewer nutrients but honestly I don't...
  15. I used white rice flour and it was great. In the beginning of her book, she mentions that you can use it but she says that it could affect the taste in some cases. Since I don't know what the coconut cake tastes like with the brown rice flour, I can't compare them but this was terrific.
  16. I made the Coconut Layer Cake from the Gluten Free Baking Classics cookbook by Annalise Roberts and I had to come here and tell everyone how amazing it was! So delicious! Just like "regular" cake. I was so pleasantly surprised. Now I am off to buy the sorghum and millet flours so I can start baking some bread I found the rice, tapioca and...
  17. so glutinous and sweet rice flour are the same? I found an asian market nearby with some really inexpensive rice flours so that is great to know!
  18. Does anyone know about Vallarta supermarket brand tortillas? I didn't even think about shared equipment. I have been having some issues that might be from being glutened and I have been eating them lately. If no one knows I will try to give them a call to see if I can find the answer.
  19. It really is tough on account of my son because he can have gluten. What I normally do is either he makes his own sandwiches, or cooks his own frozen pizza. If it is a pot of pasta, I will boil 2 separate pots of pasta. However, for the most part I don't cook a lot of gluten containing items because I don't have time to make different meals. For example...
  20. For those in the Los Angeles area (not sure about other areas), I found a HUGE selection of Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free items for a lot less than I have seen them at other stores. I found Pizza crust mix, pancake mix, all purpose flour, brownie mix, shortbread cookie mix, cornbread mix, quinoa, oat meal. I bought a BUNCH! I was so excited because they...
  21. One thing that really helps save time is to cook large batches of things so that you don't have to cook every day. Huge roasts and whole chickens in the crockpot, large pots of beans, big bowls of salads (they keep pretty well if you put them in a gallon size ziplock bag and squeeze out all the air), several pounds of ground beef fried up that can be frozen...
  22. Ice cream gluten free brownies and chocolate chip cookies greek yogurt with honey, fruit and nuts fruit in general experimenting with gluten free recipes (might be a bit expensive but kinda fun to discover) Schar crackers! I loooove crackers and cheese with my wine so this was a huge find Rice cakes reducing my intake of cookies, bread and...
  23. I have really tried to look at this from a different perspective. It has helped me a lot and I hope it might serve to help you even a little bit. I had all sorts of intestinal issues so going gluten free has helped me feel so much better that even though I sometimes look longingly at the cookie and bread aisle in the store (not to mention all the other...
  24. Rice cakes I never felt the need to try them. I always loved bread. But now I really like rice cakes. I use them in place of bread. Like today, for lunch I had rice cakes with peanut butter and banana on top. Rice in general, really. I never ate a lot of rice but now I am eating it a lot.
  25. I agree with a previous poster. If her cakes taste delicious, who cares how the textures compare? Not only that, but even gluten containing cakes have varying textures. Think pound cake vs. angel food cake. Among others! Once I went on the gluten free diet, I realized that things would be different. But seriously, there are so many other things to...
