  1. I have been gluten free for the last 5 months (diagnosed with celiac early in the year). We have very tiny grass mosquitoes that make me miserable every year. I have scars from mosquito bites. I am a gardner and I'm am out in the yard daily. This year, I have been bitten only once and had no reaction...they apparently don't like me now that I am gluten...
  2. One piece of bread might give me a mild stomach ache and that is about it. The damage it would do to my intestines is another story....I am on huge doses of iron and thyroid meds because of the mal-absorption issue that most of us have with Celiac. I'm hoping that at some point, I will heal and will no longer be anemic and will be able to go back to the...
  3. I had my first colonoscopy (actually I had both upper and lower GI) and was amazed how easy it was. The prep is not fun but certainly it is only short term...the procedure itself was a piece of cake...sorry I put it off for so long.
  4. I don't have any sage advice other than this general statement - most people take too many vitamins. Based on doctor and nutritionist advice I take only vitamin E, C, calcium, D, and iron complex - that is it. Both my doctor and my nutritionist advised me only to take those supplements that my blood tests show I need and both stated that many people take...
  5. There was a AP article a couple of weeks ago about athletes who are going gluten free because they feel that they play better without gluten. What people do is their own business - why get so upset?
  6. Honestly? I appreciate it when others think of me and my food restrictions but it is completely unexpected. I'm perfectly capable of finding my own food - in fact I prefer it.
  7. Hi Runner - welcome! You should be feeling better soon - the diet changes should eventually make a big difference in the way you feel. I too was recently diagnosed with celiac. It was a nurse practitioner who put my symptoms together and believed I might have celiac - finally I was tested - 2 blood tests and a biopsy and every test was positive. I am...
  8. All carbohydrates are broken down into simple sugars that are absorbed into the bloodstream. The carbs in some foods (mostly those that contain simple sugars and highly refined grains, such as white flour and white rice) are easily broken down into sugar. Whole grains are broken down more slowly and their sugars are released more slowly into the bloodstream...
  9. I found out about having celiac only 2 months ago. As suggested by others I try to buy a minimum of the specialty products produced for those with celiac....they are often very caloric, devoid of fiber and incredibly expensive. The bread is frustrating to me - too many calories little or no fiber - I'm just learning to live without it. I eat whole, natural...
  10. I haven't slept well in many years - I notice no difference since being diagnosed with celiac.
  11. If I know we are going to be going out to a restaurant with a group of people, I call ahead and talk to the manager and get a list of what they have that is gluten free. Then when I arrive at the restaurant, I can order without the waiter or waitress running back to check with the chef in order to try to accommodate me (while inconveniencing our friends...
  12. I'm trying to stay away from the gluten free bread, snacks, etc. The breads have little or no fiber and are so caloric! The gluten free cookies, pretzels, etc. are high in calories and again, hardly any fiber.
