ARCHIVED Nail Problems
sariesue replied to sariesue's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had hyperthyroidism for a while as a result of a medication I was on. They did a thyroid reuptake exam and it was like .01 too high. -
ARCHIVED Nail Problems
sariesue replied to sariesue's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My thyroid levels were normal 2 months ago after being high for 6 months. -
ARCHIVED Wearing Medical Alert Bracelet?
sariesue replied to mytummyhurts's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Epi-pens only work for allergic reactions so it would not be helpful in a celiac reaction unless you also have a wheat, barley, or rye allergy. -
ARCHIVED First Trip Since Being Diagnosed (Cruise)
sariesue replied to MinnesotaCeliac's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
There should be hard liquor on board. Many people don't react to hard liquor and some isn't made with gluten. I doubt that they would have cider on a cruise to the carribean. Since tropical drinks and beer would be the drinks of choice. -
Does anyone know if there is currently any support groups in CT? I searched the forum but the posts that I found were all several years old.

What part of NYC are you going to? I went there last weekend and quickly found that while it maybe one city it is HUGE. My group didn't plan well and we chose a restaurant that was over 30 blocks from the bar we wanted to go to. So you may want to look for restaurants in a spesific part of the city instead of just restaurants in the city. I did a google search...

ARCHIVED Nail Problems
sariesue replied to sariesue's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I decided to try the shellac manicure. My nails see a little stronger. We'll have to see if it will last at work. I'm a server so chipped nail polish isn't good. -
ARCHIVED What Supplements Do You Take Daily?
sariesue replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The only suplement that I take daily is b-12. But I don't think that I am taking enough any more since my fingers are numb again. -
Have you been tested for MRSA? It's no longer just in hospitals it's everywhere. And it does not heal on it's own and is resistant to many antibiotics. If it is MRSA you may need IV antibiotics or an extensive course of oral antibiotics. If left untreated MRSA is very dangerous not to mention very contagious.

ARCHIVED Nail Problems
sariesue replied to sariesue's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Do you know if the shellac is like the UV color gel nail polish? I tried the UV gel polish last year and it lasted almost a week. Except it damaged my nails when it came off. So I don't want to do that again. -
ARCHIVED Getting The Hubby On Board
sariesue replied to theWiers's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you considered preparing all of the food for a while and just cook gluten free? Or cooking together? When I first went gluten free either I cooked or my husband and I cooked together. For a while he did not cook on his own. Not until he was used to cooking gluten free. Would your husband be willing to make your house gluten free? That might be easiest... -
ARCHIVED Nail Problems
sariesue posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Does anybody else have problems with their fingernails? In addition to the millions of ridges on my nails they are extremely flexiable. To the point where I can bend them easily without any pain. Am I the only one? Does anyone know of any solutions? I've tried nail strengtheners but they don't help. -
As I get older I keep getting diagnosed with more chronic conditions. First ADHD(age 5), allergies and asthma(12), bipolar disorder(20), wheat intolerance and barley allergy(23) and I'm only 23 now. Out of all of those conditions the food ones are the easiest to deal with. My asthma could kill me randomly and forces me to take 2 inhalers daily PLUS carry...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Eating Out In Hilo ,hawaii
sariesue replied to nancy535's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I suggest spam and eggs at least once. It goes well with rice. Just be careful with the soy sauce that may have wheat in it. But spam is labeled gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Outback Steakhouse
sariesue replied to viviendoparajesus's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Aww you mean that I spread lies at work? You don't really drink frozen peach drinks named after the wallaby? From the stand point of the server at Outback, the gluten free menu is actually quite confusing. Since the gluten free menu is just the normal menu with the substitutions listed to make the meal gluten free. Like, the rack of lamb is gluten free as... -
The thing with dairy might just be a lactose intolerance issue. I know that for some people they can take lactaid pills and have no issues with dairy. So they might have taken them before.

Any idea where you can buy the Masa Harina? or a tortilla shell press? -
ARCHIVED Carmel
sariesue replied to Holly04's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The kraft carmels that I had a month ago did not contain gluten ingredients but did not say they were gluten free. I didn't get sick from them but I'm not super sensitive. -
Are they writing out the lab request on a prescription pad or on the lab request pad? I know that quest labs have difficulty reading lab requests written on prescription pads because it doesn't follow their system. If your dr is using a prescription pad can you request that it be written on the hospitals lab request form. They usually have check boxes and...

ARCHIVED Making Granola - Sub For Oats?
sariesue replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Have you tried to find a granola recipe that does not contain oats? I don't think that the oats are really substitutable in a way that would make the granola have the same texture and taste. I think that other cereals/flakes would get mushy fast and it would likely go stale very quickly. Or you could just try gluten-free oats. -
You have to consider people who have not fully made the connection to their health problems and gluten or those who are just developing symptoms. When I first was diagnosed as wheat intolerant with a barely allergy I was told that it was ok to eat small amounts of wheat as long as I wasn't having a reaction to it. So I went what I thought was gluten free...

ARCHIVED No More Wine For Me.
sariesue replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you considered CC from other areas not just the wine? I've been to a several wineries in the past and in addition to the wine they usually serve cheese and crackers or some type of snack or allow people to bring in their own meals. So surfaces could be cross contaminated. Are you sensitive to sulfites/sulfates? I know that those are in some wines. Being... -
ARCHIVED Feel So Belittled
sariesue replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree, next time they come to visit you could make pancakes with gluten-free bisquick. They are actually quite good and taste like normal pancakes. -
ARCHIVED Are There Celiacs That Don't Worry About Contaminated Kitchens?
sariesue replied to carecare's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For me it depends on who it is cooking. I trust my mother who has some teflon but takes proper percautions with her cookware she does not metal utelsils in the teflon pans and throws them away any scratched teflon pans and since she has gone to culinary school and spend her life cooking and adapting to those with food allergies in the school systems. My both... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Handle Sleepovers?
sariesue replied to smoky's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Why don't you have future sleepovers at your house? As long as you provide all of the food then your child can eat everything provided. If parents want to contribute to the event you could have them bring paper goods, or provide the movie/activity, or even drinks. In the future you could call the parents hosting the event that your daughter has celiac and...
