ARCHIVED Mother Drives Me Nuts Cooking Gluten Laden Foods
sariesue replied to catlover0329's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, I did see that part of the OP's post and mentioned that if she really needed to have one last stollen that she could make a gluten free one herself. Or to even start a non food related tradition. Traditions do sometimes need changing and adjusting. I believe that sometimes criticism is needed to show the OP how to prevent a reoccurance. If all you... -
The way to prevent that from happening again is to not allow gluten at your table when you dine out. Do you have celiac or a wheat allergy? I ask because hives are a typical allergic type response which means they would be helped/prevented by benadryl. But, the autoimmune reaction from celiac isn't histimine based so benadryl wouldn't work. But, it might...

ARCHIVED Mother Drives Me Nuts Cooking Gluten Laden Foods
sariesue replied to catlover0329's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think you are overreacting to some of this. While it was thoughtless for your mother to send the stollens because they have gluten, it is a tradition and it appears that the rest of your family still eats gluten. So to not send them would deprive them of the tradition as well. That is not thoughtless. Thoughtless would have been to just skip your family... -
That's ok, where I work has a gluten free menu. Last night one of the servers asked if the bread was gluten free. I told him no, and brought him the label on the box. The first to ingredients were wheat and barley. The training we recieved on the gluten free menu was that we have one. It's posted in the kitchen. And if someone orders something gluten free...

ARCHIVED Alcohol Intolerance
sariesue replied to BloatusMaximus's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Can some one explain to me why so many people are shocked that they can't tolerate alcohol and need to find a reason? I have a reason for them, alcohol is literally poison. The human body was not designed to tolerate alcohol. I don't know, maybe because I rarely drink my opinion is different. -
When she said she didn't know what was in the pork roast. Did you ask her to check with the kitchen about the roast or did you just move on? Because if you asked a question got a insufficient answer and left it like that then it's partially your fault that you were going to miss out on the roast because you could have asked her to check with the chef. If...

ARCHIVED Sorely Disappointed With Gi Appt. Today
sariesue replied to Hailiesmom08's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Have you had her tested for food allergies? An immediate reaction like you mentioned is stereotypical to food allergies and wheat is one of the top 8 food allergens. It might be worth considering especially since the blood tests don't require eating the food. -
ARCHIVED Question About Starbucks Skinny Peppermint Latte
sariesue replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you are looking for a lower calorie flavored latte, you could just halve the amount of flavoring they put in a drink. If your regular latte has 4 pumps of flavoring you could ask for just two. Then you have less sugar but still get some flavor. I know when I worked at starbucks the clear flavored sweeteners were all gluten free but that could have changed... -
ARCHIVED Spelt & MiIL
sariesue replied to svs's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Have you tried inviting them to your house for dinner instead of you going to their home? If it's at your house then you have complete control over what's served -
Multiple spelling mistakes bother me because all of the main web browsers that I know of correct spelling mistakes when posting on the internet. It is extreme laziness to not look for the red lines and have the word corrected. For me why should I spend my precious time to respond to a post that has a million spelling errors because the OP was too lazy to...

Actually, because they are sick and in distress is a bigger reason why they would need to read the FAQs section, if we had one instead of just posting where ever they felt like. It is a change to arm new people with information that they need immediately. This could be a complete list of symptoms, a search engine for dr's who specialize in celiac and celiac...

This topic is not required for anyone and is meant to be fun. I find it interesting to see what annoys people and to see if others find similar things annoying. I am actually newer to the forum than you, but I have belonged to other online forums in the past so some of my peeves were started in another forum. Like the walls of text I mentioned. Regardless...

Thanks, I know I need a new dr I just hate searching for them. -
ARCHIVED Why Are Dr's Incompetent?
sariesue replied to sariesue's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
At the moment he is still my dr. Currently serving two functions he is my primary care dr and GI as he is board certified in both areas. Unfortunately it is hard to change because he is also my husband's dr as well. And he really likes him. But, I may try to find a female dr and use that as a guise for changing drs.... -
I never understood that. What's the point of asking a question on a forum and then insisting that every suggestion won't work. Can't people just say thanks and move on if a reply isn't helpful? I have fairly significant ADD so long paragraphs without breaks get skipped over. Sometimes I have the concentration to read one post like that but...

ARCHIVED Why Are Dr's Incompetent?
sariesue posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Last year I finally got tired of feeling like crap all the time and had started to suspect celiac. So I went to my dr and he agreed based on my symptoms to test me. I was told that all my blood work results were normal but, was going to do the endoscopy with biopsies. Where he did a total of 8 biopsies, only two were in my small intestine. I was told the... -
Umm, why is wearing a plunge bra something to cry about? No one sees it and they aren't any more uncomfortable than a normal strapless bra. Would they really prefer the alternative? pasties? Plus they make clear bra straps these days and from a stage you can't see them. It's on all strapless dance costumes these days. If you all didn't like the costumes and...

ARCHIVED I Am So Angry
sariesue replied to Di2011's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You may find it difficult to get detailed information on their allergy from the parent. Parents are not always the best people to fill out forms you will get parents who say that the child will die if they have any lactose when in reality they get milk occasionally at home and you'll get parents who underestimate their child's allergy. Honestly, if I... -

ARCHIVED Low Carb Diet For Daughter.
sariesue replied to Juliebove's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Since you both are avoiding foods due to psychological reasons have you tried desensitization? It works with fears/phobias and might be useful. You also seem to say we a lot. Have you considered that your daughter's psych issues with food come from your issues with food? Children model the behavior that they see. She sees you eat high carb processed foods... -
ARCHIVED Entertainment Venue Food Policy
sariesue replied to tennisman's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you call ahead you might be able to get an exception made because they do not have gluten free food. This would best be done in advance. I would also want to get it in writing in case you are stopped entering and the person who approved outside food is not there. You could also call individual restaurants and see if they have gluten free options. Or you... -
ARCHIVED Advice On Cafeteria Meals For Boarding School Student
sariesue replied to LyndaLou's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I was working under the assumption that she would go home for the weekend.Since she is at an age where she may want input in the menu and it would be a great time to teach her how to cook gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Advice On Cafeteria Meals For Boarding School Student
sariesue replied to LyndaLou's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
While sending in food works for short term things like camp, it may be much more difficult in a dorm setting at a University. For one they may not have the room to store all of the extra food. I've seen University cafeteria walk ins and they are packed. There there is the matter of having it heated by the staff..Plus it could be a huge inconvenience for... -
ARCHIVED Serious Behavioral Issues
sariesue replied to millersinkenya's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I advocated testing, not medications. Yes I mentioned that medications are used and if too many episodes occur it can be harder to find effective medications in bipolar disorder because the OP mentioned a family history of bipolar disorder. But, there are many treatments that are not medications, however you would need a diagnosis in order to receive them...
