  1. As I understand the Affordable Care Act, if the Supreme Court upholds some or part of it in June, insurance companies will not be allowed to exclude people with pre-existing conditions. Currently, the way insurance companies make money is by only insuring healthy people. Under the ACA, the mandate will require everyone to buy coverage, or pay a maximum penalty...
  2. Nothing new to add: Just that agree, Applebees is terrible for the gluten free consumer. They don't have a gluten free menu, and when questioned, the servers can't even give suggestions about what *MIGHT* be gluten free/ wheat free. Last time I looked at their online menu, the only gluten free items were basically condiments and soda.
  3. Unless you are going in for more testing for celiac, you can eat gluten free. There is a physiologically separate condition called non celiac gluten sensitivity. People with this disorder have the same negative physical reaction to gluten, but often don't have positive antibodies or biopsies. This is because the molecular pathways that control NCGS activate...
  4. Get copies of all your results. I've many times had things reported as "normal" that were low normal, or even abnormal in the books of other specialists. If they give you a hard time or delay because they "lose" your request, remind them that you are legally entitled to the information. Sometimes threatening legal action is necessary.
  5. Wait...is he saying that medication can *induce* intestinal damage? Or is he saying that medications exacerbate already existing celiac disease? Both ideas are completely radical. If that's true, the high use of prescriptions in the U.S.would also explain the skyrocketing rates of celiac disease, even when controlling for better diagnosis. I'm...
  6. I recommend FRS energy drink, sold at GNC and some supermarkets. I'm not financially affiliated with them in any way, lest you think this is a plug. I just swear by it. I'll have one at lunch if I'm havin a tough day energy wise and it gives me a really relaxed energy for the second half of the day. It was originally developed for athletes and cancer patients...
  7. Hey all. Just had my endoscopy and blood tests two days ago, so I'm waiting on the results. They did find gastritis of the Antrum (upper part of the stomach). Not diagnosed officially with GERD, but they put me on prilosec with a watch and see attitude. The constant kicked in the stomach feeling is a little less after two days. They took six biopsies of my...
  8. For girls in your age bracket, I'd say there's a very slim possibility that any growth may occur. This is because the growth plates on the bones of the vast, vast majority of girls have fused by age 20. In fact, they've usually fused by the time a girl hits 14 or 15 years of age. This means that any more lengthening of the bone structure is unlikely. This...
  9. Its called angular cheitis, and I used to get it all the time before Celiac disease was suspected. It's caused by iron deficiency anemia or B vitamin anemia in celiacs, and it's actually a symptom used as an indicator for diagnosis and further testing. It can also be caused by yeastie beasties if you've been fighting thrush like many people here do. I haven...
  10. I'm looking for experiences from veterans who, for one reason or another, went gluten free for a good while (say at least 4 months), and then had to go back on for a challenge. I have a GI appointment in three weeks with new blood testing, and the goal is to get my antibodies as high as possible without literally or metaphorically killing myself. I just...
  11. Well, THAT fixed EVERYTHING. Just say YES to Oxytocin! ;-)

  12. I can't decide which -ism it falls better under though. Remains tbd. For now- to the batcave! Er, tumblr.

  13. I am going to go get in the shower, take a BUNCH of prozac, and calm the eff down. If I respond right now, I will be...not nice.

  14. What you're going through is completely natural. Pretty much everyone I know, and I'm including myself, went through a period of anger and mourning when they found out they had celiac disease. Food is such a fundamental part of any culture, and ours in particular is very wheat obsessed. It's definitely okay to allow yourself some ups and downs on the road...

    Loreal Products

Loreal Infallible what? (Mascara, foundation, blush) Makeup lines can vary by product as to whether they contain gluten. Not being a user of Loreal myself, I think excellence creme is a hair color kit, yes? I would pay particular attention to the conditioner in the kit, as I doubt highly it's gluten free. Actually yeah, now that I look up the ingredients...
  16. One of the websites I read recommended getting the concierge to write some cards that say specifically no soy and no oyster sauce. Also, avoiding street food vendors seems pretty obvious, but I did that when travelling in Paris! And I know French!
  17. Welcome! I checked out your blog, and really liked how readable it is, and the first person perspective on your early gluten free experiences. As to the Gluten-Free travel, I've come across some pretty focused travel websites, like one on India, that have been pretty awesome about what and how you can eat. I've heard the Far East is a little easier on gluten...
  18. Yay William and Mary! I think their being featured on CNN deserves a shoutout! #GoTribe!

  19. Hi! I use John Frieda's Roots Awakening (no gluten or dyes), Hamadi leave in shea conditioning cream with lavender and Hamadi shea conditioning spray Renpure Organics Conditioner (no gluten, parabens, sulfates, dyes), Neutrogena Moistureshine Lipgloss, Milani Lipstick, Physician's Formula (Eye Shimmers in Hazel, Eye Shimmers Eyeliner...
  20. I don't know what they have available in prenatals, but GNC certifies all their multis as free of common allergens. I've been happy with them so far, but I have multiple friends who work in that chain, so I get extra help picking stuff out when I need it. Not sure about the copper, to be honest. If it's not supposed to be in a prenatal, I imagine it wouldn...
  21. Thanks for the information Shauna! I've noticed this phenomenon myself. I can eat an organic corn chowder with no problems, but give me processed cornstarch chips, or anything with citric acid, and I have reactions that night and the next day. Very confusing! It's good of you to clear that up.
  22. A lot of four year universities require their students to have health insurance, whether it's through their parents or through the school. I think that regulation *may* vary by the state though. I second the student health insurance. It may not get you very far with specialists and such, but it will at least get you in to see the Nurse Practitioners and...
  23. If you care about what you put on your skin/ hair/ nails/ other...this is THE place to find out if it's safe, env. friendly, animal friendly, vegan, etc.

  24. Did you know: In an Environmental working group report entitled "Skin Deep," reviewers found that 90% of the chemicals used in personal care cosmetics have not been evaluated for safety? Over 80% of surveyed products contained one or more chemicals known to cause adverse reactions in humans or animals.
