I agree with Patti -- if a phone call is all it takes from keeping you sick, that's a smallprice to pay. . . . Lynne

I'm such a chicken that now, I buy plain yogurt, add a little sugar, some vanilla extract, and whatever fruit I want -- kind of mix it up like I did with ice cream when I was a kid, and voila -- fruit-flavored yogurt! I'm starting to get to the point that I think I'm quirky about gluten, but it's scary that it's everywhere. I didn't know that Kroger was changing their Corn Pops, too. Now I have to send my husband out to buy up all the Kroger Corn Pops that don't contain wheat! . . . Lynne

I think it was something exactly like you said - all I know is it made me mad! I'll post it as soon as I get a response! . . . Lynne

Nini -- I cannot believe that I'm sitting here crying over McDonald's products. It's just that, when I think of kids, they all think that McDonalds is the fun place to go, and trying to give your kids a normal life is hard enough as it is. Much less to have to find out that they put ingredients in their products that would make them sick. That just breaks my heart. My kids are grown -- 19 and 23, but they had food allergies that were moderate, and that was hard enough. It was nothing like celiac. I am so sorry for you. Honest to God, if we can prove that they are misrepresenting their products or ingredients, or are talking out of both sides of their mouth, I think we should somehow manage to get it out on a national news program what is happening.
Susan -- never apologize for helping to keep people healthy. Each time I eat gluten, another portion of my cerebellum and retinas gets destroyed. I have been eating McD's fries because I thought they were safe. How much of my brain is gone because of it? And are their fries the reason that the double vision in my left eye won't leave now? Thank you for exposing them. . . . Hugs to you, Lynne
P.S. -- Karen, I was wondering where you were! Hope you're feeling better

teebs --Thanks for the info - I guess having a biopsy on your face wouldn't be great, but I've had one on my neck muscles, on the deepest muscles of my inner thigh, my small intestine, two after lumpectomies, why not my face, too???
I do think that it's odd that the "pustules"? come out each time I'm glutened. I've been strict on the gluten-free diet for 33 weeks now, and when I don't accidentally come across gluten, my face looks really good. (you know what I mean -- my skin)
The things are starting to leave, because I was glutened last Monday, and my ataxia is not as bad as it was last Tuesday. I guess I will have to wait until the next time I'm glutened . . . . but hope that it never happens!
Where in WV do you live? I have in-laws there -- it's beautiful!

I use a combination of egg and whey protein -- supposedly, it's gluten-free. So far, haven't had a problem with it. I had asked someone about casein sensitivity -- dont' think I got an answer -- I think that would be the only difficulty you would have with whey protein.

When I was working there as a kid (16) which was a REALLY long time ago, the french fries came in half-cooked -- they were first cooked in lard, then frozen. We did cook the hash browns in the same vat that we cooked the fries. Now?? Who knows. I do know that the Gluten Free Bible states that the Chicken Bacon Ranch salad is gluten-free, but this list DOES NOT. I'm in for bombarding McDonalds and getting some real answers. Let me know if you want a revolt! . . . . Lynne

Now that my husband has taught me how to post the replies I get from companies, I can finally pass on the information I get. Here is the response I received from Neutrogena, along with their Gluten-Free List. (I got a really "vague" response from Dove, and was so angry I immediately deleted it. I'll try again and see what happens!)
Thank you for contacting Neutrogena.

Tony Romas was listed in the Gluten Free Bible as having gluten-free products, and I believe, a gluten-free menu. My husband and I went to a Tony Romas in Lexington, KY and I asked for the gluten-free menu. The waitress told me that this particular restaurant was a franchise and didn't have the same menu items as the Corporate restaurants did. I e-mailed Tony Romas corporate, and they first gave me a bland "we are going to post a limited nutritional information . . . please visit our website in the future." I replied, asking how people were able to get a gluten-free menu in the past. Here is their response:
Several years ago, we did provide a limited list of gluten free items. Due to changes in food distribution companies and methods of preparing foods, it became necessary to remove that information from distribution. Tony Roma's barbecue sauces, ribs and chicken are the only food products that do not contain gluten/wheat.
Just thought I'd give you the heads up. . . . Lynne

Thank you for your input -- I'm getting really tired of looking like I have some kind of pox around my face!
-
My cousin works for a magazine which is owned by a registered dietician. (don't ask -- it's a bizarre, but evidently very profitable story) I'll ask her if she can get some info. Lynne

Hey! What do you know? My husband and I did the right thing without knowing it! In desperation, we sprinkled cayenne pepper all over the area where I had planted my bulbs. Then we went looking for the squirrels and chipmunks with swollen lips! (just kidding) -- but it kept them from eating them. (at least some of them -- I think they had already gotten a bunch!) Hey wait . . . Shirley or Jen -- did you guys give me that advice? I think maybe so . . . . Lynne
-
I know I have bothered you guys so many times, and I am really sorry. I am just really confused as to this stupid rash on my face. I was glutened at Christmas time, and it popped up -- itchy, kind of blistery-looking pimples that bleed, and it went all the way back throughout my scalp. Then, I used a gluten-containing cleanser about 3-4 weeks ago, and the same thing happened. (didn't know it contained gluten at the time). Now, I was glutened by my husband (Penn Station Subs -- kissing prior to flossing), and these same stupid "things" are on my face and scalp. Could this possibly be a mild form of DH, or is this all just a weird coincidence? My neuro doc wants me to have it biopsied during a breakout. Do you really think that's necessary? . . . Thanks (again) for your help . .. . Lynne

mvaught: I'm starting to believe the same with regard to thyroid conditions. I was first diagnosed with an "enlarged thyroid" at age 12-13 with normal TSH T3, T4. It is NOT normal, however, for a kid to have a goiter! I was also this very hyperactive, skinny kid who had diarrhea ALL THE TIME. They blamed it on the fact that I had to be on antibiotics a lot. I no longer have the stomach difficulties, am celiac negative, but gluten has now begun to destroy my brain, retinas and peripheral nerves. I CERTAINLY think that all thyroid conditions have an autoimmune predisposition, if not a genuine autoimmune root. Both of my kids are having thyroid difficulties (19 and 23); our GP is doing the whole panel including antibodies on both of them. I'm not taking any chances with either.

My brother-in-law has a farm (cattle, sheep, chickens) -- did you know that over 20 years ago, veterinarians knew that e-pylori caused ulcers and that antibiotics were the correct treatment? Human docs found that out, what, 8 years ago????

I'm getting the same response with the reply function with a personal message.

That was good! My teacup toy won't even look at me after the vet takes her temp -- she is so furious with me!
My mom scared me to death a couple of months ago -- I had a fever and was at her house -- I asked her where the thermometer was -- she told me, I cleaned it with alcohol, and as I was using it, she said "I hope that's not Sugar's thermometer" -- I thought I was going to be sick
She started laughing so hard she had to hold her sides! She said -- Sugar's thermometer is in with the dog stuff -- don't throw up on the floor!
. . . . Lynne
You know, it dawned on me -- we're laughing about that stuff, but seriously -- when I first went into the vet's office with the dog when I was using a walker, the first thing he said was "Have you been tested for canine erlichiosis? It's running rampant around here for the last two years." The he gave me a list of things for which he wanted the MD's to test. I can't tell you the eye-rolling I got (at hopkins) when I told them that my vet wanted me to be tested for these. (along with my shots and worming)! Just kidding

Louisville, KY -- if you live anywhere close, I would highly recommend this practice. My MD's name was Martin Mark. They have on staff a celiac specialist, Dr. Adler, who read and re-read my biopsies and bloodwork. They are awesome. BTW: Biopsies for celiac are down down your throat. They give you liquid to numb the back of your throat, give you some meds to make you sleepy, and a bite guard in your mouth. They thread the tub down your throat, through your stomach, and into your small intestine. My MD took 4 biopsy samples from the small intestine. I did, though, have a colonoscopy the same day, because I had some DEFINITE changes from the usual. I had IBS for the majority of my life, then simply stopped going. Really. Like once every 6-8 days was good. So they did the colonoscopy. I told someone on another thread -- if you have to have both, be advised: They do NOT think it's funny if you ask them that, if they're going to use the same tube, will the put it down your throat first. . . . Lynne
-
I think it's normal . . . I just got "glutened" because my husband had to go on a business trip unexpectedly in the middle of the day (get your stuff, fly out, the client is furious) -- but had eaten Penn Station subs for lunch. With lots of kissing prior to him leaving, and him not flossing beforehand . . . I ended up with increased symptoms this entire week. (I'm hoping that it is going to subside SOON!)
-
Hi Eric -- I saw the GI doc on Thursday, got my antitranglutaminase and antiendomysial antibody tests drawn that day, and had my scope (I believe) the next Tuesday. Including the colonoscopy, too. (BTW: If they schedule both, they DON'T think it's funny if you ask them that if they're going to use the same tube, would they put it down your throat first.) . . . . Lynne

Thanks! Actually, you must be a mind-reader, because I am looking for a (competent) accupuncturist in our area. The guy who was the BEST passed away unexpectedly a couple of years ago, and there has been no one with his knowledge / skill in our area since. We have a lot of the "I took a 5 day course in acupuncture, so now I know everything" practitioners in our area -- which scares me. As a PT, I can become certified in acupuncture, but it takes a long time, from what I understand. I don't know where these guys have gotten their training, but they're like some of the over-zealous trainers at the local workout places!!!!!
-
Thanks Shirley -- I didn't even think of that! My husband is pretty much gluten-free, too -- we don't have very much gluten-containing food in the house anymore -- BUT -- he gets subs, etc. at work, and grazes on them during the day. I'll bet that's EXACTLY what happened! You are so smart
. . . .Lynne

Congratulations! You must feel GREAT! . . . Lynne

Don't know for sure, but I think it's a valid question. I think the most pressing question would be whether powdered gloves contain gluten. I have read that some forms of talc incorporate wheat into their final product -- I don't know if this is the case in the powder which is used in gloves. With regard to pure Latex, my understanding is that it does not contain gluten. I don't know about nitrile gloves, however. Good question . . . Lynne

I was scrolling through the sports and fitness category. There's a thread on there about Team Celiac -- it's a fundraiser walk/run for Celiac. The whole information is on that thread, which is very informative. At any rate, they're going to be in Lake Placid on June 11, 2006 and it looks as though it will be big. Perhaps that is the way to get to the bigger programs, such as Oprah. Just a thought . . . Lynne
