  1. You don't need to have a fasting glucose test. You need to have a fasting INSULIN test. This will tell your endocrinologist if you have an elevated insulin level. If it is high, it means that your cells are becoming "desensitized" to the insulin your pancreas is producing. Therefore, your pancreas has to secrete additional insulin to keep your blood sugar...
  2. Hi Guys -- Shirley, I'm glad your husband is doing well -- isn't it amazing what they can do with regard to knee scopes now? Pretty cool. I hope he feels better soon. O.K. As far as the worm poop goes, we'll probably never KNOW how many it takes, because within two weeks, I kill all the darned things. And let me tell you, I did everything BY THE...
  3. Beverly, thanks for the compliments! I'm on a mission . . . My husband just made a very good point: he said that someone stated that companies like Proctor & Gamble are so big that they can find out if what their suppliers are providing are gluten-free. His take on it is this (and I think it's a good one, not just because he's my husband : Companies...
  4. I have a similar thread going . . . the Neutrogena folks sent a list of all their gluten-free products. When questioned further, because it says "Wheat free", they responded that the items listed only are guaranteed wheat free -- but not barley, rye or oats. The entire list is on my thread if you want it. Also, Cetaphil products are gluten-free -- both...
  5. I haven't had a whole lot of trouble with meds, but a little bit: my generic synthroid contained gluten according to its manufacturer (can't remember which), so my endocrinologist changed it to Name Brand Only because it's gluten-free. The generic Klonopin I was taking for the spasticity I have contained gluten, so I had to change to Name Brand Only on...
  6. And from Dove . . . . . From: "doveusa, comments" <Comments.Doveusa@unilever.com> To: <bodyworxinc@hotmail.com> Subject: FW: Dove Information Date: Wed, 8 Feb 2006 15:55:36 -0500 > Hi, > >Thanks for writing! > >We do not specifically test our products for the presence of gluten, a >sticky protein found in some grains...
  7. I guess the thought of other people seeing their response on the internet made them take a second look at their policy. Hmmmmm...... Rusla -- I think it's great that you're developing your own shampoo! I started making my own lotion, lip balm, bath oil, bath salts, etc. years ago -- before I was diagnosed with gluten intolerance, just because I liked...
  8. I DON'T understand why people can be so mean. I have been very lucky that my family (mom, dad, sister & kids) have been supportive. What is interesting to me, though, is that birthdays are a HUGE deal for us. It is YOUR day. As supportive as my family has been, I still haven't been able to "partake" during the celebration, because they serve regular...
  9. Usually it is what you ingest -- as far as causing a systemic reaction, it needs to be ingested. Gluten molecules are too large to get into your system transdermally. My thought, though, is -- if I put lotion on my face, and I touch my face & put my hand to my mouth, or I get the lotion too close to my lips, or if I put on lipstick that contains gluten...
  10. Actually, I think we talked about worm poop a long time ago, too!
  11. Holy Mackerel! I don't know where I posted it, but I wrote about my thyroid stuff. I had an elevated TSH, and an enlarged thyroid; I was going to a GREAT endocrinologist who kept it under control with Synthroid. Our insurance changed, and she wasn't on the list, so I switched to an endocrinologist recommended by a friend. He told me that I didn't need...
  12. Honestly, we're supposed to get 1" - 3". You would think that we are going to have the blizzard of the century. They're breaking into programs with the "Winter Snow Alerts" and each has its own scary title with the big voice "Winter Snow Advisory", whatever EVERYONE is going out to the grocery for Milk, Bread (not me) and eggs! You wouldn't be able...
  13. Hot Damn and Hallelujah -- I'm so excited I'm good at math!!!!!! Jen, I'm sorry you're feeling bad today -- hope you get to feeling better this weekend. We're supposed to get hit with snow this evening -- are you getting it up north? And, with regard to the earthworm farming, let us not forget, they all died. Still used it as compost --...
  14. Happy to do it! It's the least I can do to help everyone who has been SO KIND to me during my "learning curve". The help and support I have gotten on this forum has been unbelievable. From a personal standpoint, I'm infuriated that these companies can justify their actions by claiming ignorance. EVERYONE should take responsibility for their actions...
  15. stef 4 dogs: I about peed my pants after reading your post!! Time and gravity haven't been kind to me -- I keep complaining that I have to pick my butt up off the back of my knees!!!!! . . .Lynne
  16. Lisa B: I agree with your advice -- monitor her meds closely and monitor HER closely. I'm getting REALLY personal. My daughter was diagnosed with depression and anxiety (she is not celiac), and was given Paxil when she was a junior in high school. The pediatrician prescribed Zoloft, CHANGING what the child psychiatrist had prescribed, telling me that...
  17. Jen, I've PM'd you about getting a copy of the crazyquilts, but I gotta know -- in what areas are you weak? Honestly, you're articulate, you know a TON of how to navigate the internet, you obviously know a lot about celiac and medical / sciences, AND, you're a domestic goddess. What is your secret? I seriously want to know, because you look REALLY young...
  18. I think the best part of this forum is that, because we're all in the same boat, we all have a great, albeit twisted, sense of humor about the whole thing!!!!! At any rate, I found a dietician in my area who actually KNOWS about Celiac and Gluten intolerance. I have spoken with her about my concerns, and particularly with the issue of weight gain ...
  19. I have a topic (thread) in this category which I started where I have been contacting companies, posting their responses, and posting my response to them. Please read my response to Proctor & Gamble. I felt very vindicated after writing it! Will let you guys know if they repond to IT! We'll see what happens . . . . Lynne
  20. Happy to help. I'm used to writing letters because of my profession -- half of the work is writing! My friends tell me that I'm the "Queen of BS". They have also told me that "I can tell someone basically to go to hell, and make them think that they're going to enjoy the ride." So I think that's what I'm telling these companies. Hope they enjoy the...
  21. I agree. Until they show some good-faith effort, I'm not going there for anything. Trust is something you earn. They have a lot of "earning" to do.
  22. And from Revlon . . . . From: <rachel.evans@revlon.com> To: <bodyworxinc@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: In response to your comments from the Revlon website, 001581197A Date: Thu, 9 Feb 2006 15:01:12 -0500 >Mrs. Lynne Wagner >9210 Old Six Mile Ln >Louisville, KY 40299-1627 > > >Dear Mrs. Wagner: > >We have received...
  23. From Bonne Bell: Dear Lynne, The only products that Bonne Bell makes that contain glutens are the Original Lip Smackers (chapstick type container), Cosmic Lip Smackers, Kool-Aid Lip Smacker, Clip ‘n Go and Sun Smackers. All other products are gluten free. If you have any additional questions about any of our products, please do not hesitate to ...
  24. Their "Skin Revver Upper" lotion DOES contain gluten -- they sent a sample with an order I placed -- wheat protein (I believe) was listed in the ingredients -- which is why I threw it out. I wear only Bare Escentuals, but use Cetaphil lotion. Just be careful!
  25. I've started another thread where I am posting all the answers which I receive from companies (and my responses to them). You might be interested to read my response to Proctor & Gamble when they mandated a letter by my physician on his letterhead. I am still waiting for responses from Revlon, Almay, Dove, Maybelline, I think that's all. I'll keep...
