  1. Is the mayonnaise made with soy oil?
  2. I understand about the terrible devestation you feel when you comb your hair and there's just chunks of it sitting in the brush or you pull your hand through your hair and strands of it come away in your fingers. It's horrible. It got to the point where I wouldn't even comb my hair cause I dreaded what I would see. I have low iron, low calcium which...
  3. When my hair was falling out I also increased my vitamin D intake to 4000 ius. That helped. There is current research showing that vitamin d affects the receptors in the hair follicle. Also, on the off chance you don't know, I'll also mention that calcium inhibits iron absorption and the two should be injested a couple of hours apart. I take my iron...
  4. Absolutely. I also emailed them back to find out why they are not voluntarily complying with Health Canada and Canada Food Inspection Agency's (the branch of government that enforces labeling/food safety in industry for the consumer): "CFIA also encourages manufacturers and importers of grain-based products to transition towards the inclusion of precautionary...
  5. psawyer, I cannot find any statement within the link you provided that supports the above statement. If I have missed it can you please provide it. Again, I go with what Health Canada says and The Canadian Food Inspection Agency reiterates on their website and which is provided in the link in my previous post: OTTAWA, May 20, 2011 - The Canadian...
  6. I go with Health Canada on this one. If you are a manufacturer pumping out a product that could contain wheat it's good form to let people know on the label. Especially if this grain is not listed but the product contains traces. Again, I reiterate: other companies are making the effort to label wheat or gluten containing products in compliance with...
  7. I say they get a fail because there are many other products that don't contain wheat as an ingredient but the label clearly states, "may contain wheat". Health Canada's new Regulations totally encourages manufacturers to 'self declare. While some companies are good on this, Kellog's doesn't seem to want to respond. On May 19, 2011, Health Canada communicated...
  8. I e-mailed Kellog's Canada to ask if they use certified uncontaminated oats in Corn Pops (The Canadian product does not contain wheat starch) and if not, what ppm did their oat flour test to. This is their response: Thank you for contacting Kellogg with your question about the source of gluten in our Kellogg's Corn Pops. The gluten in Corn Pops...
  9. I know, I know...I love sandwich meats too. As well as any kind of dried sausage. That was a huge let down when I knew I had to stop eating them. But, I do feel great! Do keep an eye on the msg thing and keep us posted. I'd be interested to see if it's part of the swollen limbs issue.
  10. If you google "migraine diet" you will see a whole whack of foods that trigger migraines. Most of the triggers can be found in processed foods. The triggers can be found on the second page, third column of this site: Open Original Shared Link
  11. If your corn source was popcorn, tortilla's and nacho's, cavernio, I would suspect the salt and msg content of those products. All of them, excepting the popcorn which would only have salt, would have high amounts of salt and msg. Regarding the meats, what kind are you eating? Processed meats or are you cooking them yourself? Any kind of sandwich...
  12. I used to have badly swollen legs, hands and my left side of my face would sag. (Yikes! - I thought stroke!) Gluten would do it but it didn't disappear until I totally eliminated all salt, msg, processed foods and reduced my intake of protein. All I eat now for animal protein is fish.
  13. I was diagnosed with a very slow growing brain tumour in 2009 and had two MRI's within months of each other. I was diagnosed with gluten ataxia at the end of last year and had an MRI just a few short months ago. In the space of two and a half years (still eating gluten) , I had additional brain lesions or unidentified bright white spots. My neurologist...
  14. Apple slices with peanut butter on top deliver the crunch and a bit of the saltiness of chips. I keep a bag of broccoli in my fridge for quick snacks. Also raw pumpkin seeds, carrots, celery sticks, blueberries and strawberries. I agree with Takala. The more you eat the whole foods, the more your body wants less of the processed stuff. At first,...
  15. I read a recent interview with Fassano who said that there was evidence that the gluten sensitivity/reaction was based on the "innate immune system". I'll try and see if I can come up with the interview.. Here you go: ""We're talking about 20 million people out there," he says. "This gives some rational reason why people come up with the symptoms they...
  16. I'm with ciamarie on this as I too have eliminated msg, soy, caffeine, nitrates and sulfites as recommended by my neurologist who suspected I had migraine (silent) associated vertigo. The above foods act as a trigger. Along with the vertigo my ears would pain me incessantly. Since eliminating all the above foods, my ear issues have resolved. That...
  17. Hi, BuckeyeGirl... Aside from the fact that some celiacs test negative, you might have non celiac gluten intolerance in which case the celiacs testing won't catch it. Keep going on the gluten free eating and see if your issues subside substantially within the next few weeks. It takes a while to heal and for your body to slowly get healthy so you...
  18. I know that depression, Joe. I send you warm thoughts and big hugs and want to tell you that even though figuring it all out is damn hard, you'll get there in the end. It will be alright. Kamma
  19. Hello Shauna. Good to see you. Like the others, it's strictly veggies, fruit, seeds and occasionally fish for me. Anything else and especially the processed products labeled 'gluten free' give me huge reactions. I've eliminated meat more for ethical reasons but I'm also not missing it. The neuro I see also suggested eliminating all forms of msg...
  20. I'm glad that protein in the urine has been ruled out for you. One of the other things that I have heard people mention is hypothroidism causing edema. Plus, problems with the thyroid is very common in people with celiac.
  21. Emilem, Something to consider: I had/have the swelling in my hands, face and ankles. I was recently tested positive for albumin (protein) in the urine which is a sign of kidney disease. Edema is also a symptom of kidney dysfunction. You might want to ask your doctor to check your protein levels in your serum and urine.
  22. Thank you, Valeria. I'm sorry to hear about your son. Is he doing okay? They have just caught the albumin levels a few weeks ago and I am now doing blood glucose tests. I think that's the first line of inquiry when you have albumin? At least from what I have read? It's my neurologist who is ordering this after my regular GP dismissed the ablumin results...
  23. Is anyone familiar with or knowledgeable about abnormally high levels of albumin in the urine? As well as a high level of albumin / creatine ratio in the urine(microalbumin)? I've just got my test results back and everything is in the normal range except those. It is my neurologist who is spearheading this as my regular G.P.is a mindless idiot (I had...
  24. "Final farewell to gluten tour".... Should you quit? Well, do you feel sure that gluten causes a problem for you? From where I sit and have been reading, the more you eat it, the more symptoms keep cropping up. This is the true validation. If you are sure, then yes, quit. Based on the fact that you are reacting to it and could potentially...
  25. Yup, we're living vicariously through Birdie here. Queasy feelings and all! So I'm going to add three more to the list: One week in: - headache - lethargy (seems like that is beginning) - heartburn - nausea - bloat - pain under your breast bone - canker sore - fogged out - restless sleep - starving - dizzy - gas pains...
