ARCHIVED Shocked After Modified Food Starch CommentKamma replied to 1974girl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications I would be cautious in accepting 'modified food starch' as an ingredient listing in foods that are imported as there is no regulation requiring them to list allergens. It is encouraged but not required. At least in Canada. Furthermore, in the recommendations of listing possible allergens, wheat is listed but not barley and rye. I stumbled upon this when...

ARCHIVED Just Been Told Ms Could It Be AtaxiaKamma replied to Leis's topic in Related Issues & Disorders Hi Leis I looked at the links you provided. I have never heard of Dr. Charles Parker and wanted to see what his credentials were and what qualified him as an expert. He has a bachelors degree in biology and labels himself as a neuroscientist ( (which is different than a neurologist and there is nothing that certifies you as a 'neuroscientist') and has...

Pain under control now, kristenleoh? Life is always a lot more tolerable when you don't have a jack hammer in your head. Fantastic you don't have hypothryroidism. Cross that one off your list!

ARCHIVED Just Been Told Ms Could It Be AtaxiaKamma replied to Leis's topic in Related Issues & Disorders Hello Leis, The neurological impact of gluten ingestion is slowly gaining traction in the mainstream medical community but not enough where I would say neurologists are familiar with the ins and outs of it. It's only been researched in the last fifteen years or so. It would be good to err on the side of caution and assume the neurologist doesn't...

ARCHIVED Just Been Told Ms Could It Be AtaxiaKamma replied to Leis's topic in Related Issues & Disorders Hello Leis, I was diagnosed with gluten ataxia last year and do have some lesions. My brother was diagnosed with progressive relapsing MS, the rarest and most disabling type, fifteen years ago. My understanding of the lesions is it's where they are forming in the brain and brain stem that decides whether it can be diagnosed as MS or not. On a positive...

Fingers crossed too that you won't have to have radiation. Radiation is one of my fears as well. The only good thing I can say about that is that the effects of radiation do go away after time. You're on an emotional rollercoaster ride with the hormonal state that you're body is in and the anticipatory/anxiety feelings that all this is bringing on...

No, sweetheart, you sound like a woman that is dealing with a helluva lot and trying to get through it. Whiny b%$@#es moan about small things like breaking a nail, having streaks from their foam on suntan and not plucking their eye brows in time. You are most assuredly not a whiny b%$@#. Let that thought be banished from your head - you already have a...

There is a recent study showing how some celiacs do not get better on a 'processed gluten free' diet and that contamination is an obstacle in healing. I believe dilettantsteph just posted it last week in the "super sensitive" forum right here. You might want to show it to your mom so she knows there is scientific evidence backing you up and that it isn...

ARCHIVED Anyone Get Gluten Type Reactions From Coffee?Kamma replied to gluten-is-kryptonite's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease The findings in that database are fascinating. Especially about coffee being adulterated with those grains you mentioned, dilletantsteph.

Yeah, it's a scary thought to think of someone going ito your brain. I understand totally. The comforting thought is that neurosurgeons are those at the very top of the medical field. They don't pass 'em on in medical school if they can't do the job and do it impeccably. If you get a choice in a neurosurgeon, ask to see how many of these particular types...

That's too bad. I was rooting for the medication to work but we don't want you dropping dead of heart failure. Do you know which type of surgery method they will be using? All of the reading that I have done says that the nasal method is the most common and leaves not a trace, scar or wound after. You must feel anxious. Hang in there. It's going...

Oh, that's too bad. I know you must have been hoping that this drug would do the trick without the side effects. The heart racing like mad must have been frightening. Could it be an initial effect that will fade with time? What did your endo say when you dropped in on her?

Keep me posted on how you progress with the hormones and the state of the tumour. You can pm me if you want.

ARCHIVED Why Are Drs So Hesitant To Test?Kamma replied to MissyShelle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms Butterflychaser, that was one hell of a good post. I especially like how you described the rampant usage of drugs and the whole movement in the medical field to attribute symptoms to a mental disorder which is, of course, backed up by the pharmaceutical companies.

Yes, you can. You really can. I know when I was diagnosed with my tumour and facing the consequences of an eventual surgery and what that would mean I really took a good long look at life and what it meant. You come to accept a lot of things and try not to sweat too much over the small stuff. You find the reserves to keep going and dig really hard to...

ARCHIVED Celiac Ataxia Or Dyspraxia ?Kamma replied to VeggieGal's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I hope going gluten free helps resolve his issues, veggiegal. That would be wonderful. Please do keep me posted on how it goes.

ARCHIVED Celiac Ataxia Or Dyspraxia ?Kamma replied to VeggieGal's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I'm sorry, I wasn't as concise as I could be with my wording. I should have said it can take up to a year for all the issues to resolve. Some resolve more quickly than others. In my particular case, the head fog, fatigue and slurring of the speech resolved within months but the balance issues took longer. With the balance issues you notice small incremental...

ARCHIVED Celiac Ataxia Or Dyspraxia ?Kamma replied to VeggieGal's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Hello Veggiegal, I was diagnosed with gluten ataxia last year and have done much of the reading on the research material that is available. I'll try and answer some of your questions. The current testing for celiac is just for the intestinal and skin manifestations. Gluten ataxia will not usually be diagnosed through this test as people with gluten...

That is absolutely horrible that you have to go through all that on top of figuring out and adapting to the gluten free diet and lifestyle. The migraines are insidious, aren't they? One could just about go through anything in life if it wasn't accompanied by a huge whacking throbbing in the head. Once the tumour shrinks or it's removed, will your pituitary...

It's a very slow growing tumour. The only problems I had was some years ago when after weaning my son off the breast at six months, I continued to produce milk for six additional years. The doctors then did testing but everything else came back normal and I stopped producing the milk. We didn't know then it was because of the tumour. At this point...

I feel for you, kristenloeh. I was diagnosed with a 9 mm craniopharyngioma on the pituitary growing towards my optic chiasma a few years. It hasn't disrupted the pituitary yet and the last MRI showed no new growth. I hope the hormone therapy is working good for you.

ARCHIVED Trace Gluten Responsible For Ongoing Symptoms - StudyKamma replied to dilettantesteph's topic in Super Sensitive People Thanks for posting this, dilettantesteph. It's a great confirmation that trace gluten is still causing symptoms and the 20 ppm simply does not go far enough for some celiacs.

Gatita, I was diagnosed with gluten ataxia in January 2012. I immediately stopped ingesting gluten and within weeks I felt my fatigue lessening. My balance issues and drunken walking still continued however. It was only by going super clean and only eating fresh foods (absolutely no processed foods including 'gluten free' replacements foods as most...

ARCHIVED I Think Celiac Testing Is FlawedKamma replied to Seeking2012's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms Hi Seeking, I'd like to say thanks for posting those questions since it motivated me to search a little harder for a few things. I found a laboratory medicine wiki for the second year university students at the University of California. This link outlines how labs establish the reference ranges for testing: Open Original Shared Link Also, in answer...
