ARCHIVED Dh & Probiotics - Sals Or Iodine
squirmingitch replied to squirmingitch's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Looks like I'll be eating a lot of vanilla yogurt then. Thanks! I've never cared for maple --- I know -- weird --- but I may just have to learn to like it. You know, I was so excited to find the Chobani that I didn't even look any farther. I will look & see if I can find Fage. Thanks Skylark. -

YUK. Don't like the sound of that burning skin! Sounds a lot like getting a really, really bad sunburn. Floridian here. Grew up eating mangos off the tree. Love them! I might not be able to resist a spoonful of the mango flavor. I get the itchy blister, which turns to oozy sores on my scalp & then finally, eventually, they get scabby, oozy, itchy, burning... -
I think you summed it up quite nicely = antibodies don't have a clue! Nah, my hubs is a meat & potatoes guy. he doesn't eat nearly enough veggies. I grew up eating very balanced I think. Lots of veggies & fruits in there. And thank goodness I've (fingers crossed) never had food poisoning! Hubs has & like you is deathly afraid of it ever...

Hindsight being 20/20 the short answer is yes. Now that I have learned about celiac I can look back & see the correlation between events & celiac. To summarize: I had celiac since childhood & believe I went into remission until teen years & experimentation with beer which I HATED. I used to tell my friends it felt like a garden rake had been...

Woooooooo, I tried the plain Chobani & yeow! it's sour! Pucker up. I ought to put it on a baked potato & I think I will. I did grab some vanilla flavored --- I can't find vanilla on any of the sals lists & I also grabbed a container of mango --- it's in the moderate range of sals. Interesting that it says it has 2 times more protein than regular... -
I think that's what's so tricky about this dh stuff. It can make an appearance (or not) at any time glutened or not until all the antibodies are out of your skin. Makes it darn hard to know if you've been glutened! Now, in my particular case, I have few (external) GI issues from celiac. The last time I was glutened, I had terrible sudden onset of cramps...

Awwwwwwwww POOR BABY! Breaks my heart. It sure looks like a lot of my dh does at times. I echo Prickly --- find a derm who is knowledgeable about dh & the biopsy procedure & get it done. And if he's still eating gluten you can go to the GI doc of your 10 yr. old & get this little one tested too. It's eerie how on his back the rash is bilateral...

Dani, yes, dh mutates. I swear it mutates just to frustrate us! Just when you think you have it figured out it goes & does something different on you. Your finger does sound like it's in a healing phase. Covering it will help like Prickly says. And then you may get slapped in the face (figuratively) when dh blisters pop back up on the finger. Darn stuff...

Most excellent info. ALL of you & I greatly appreciate it! Call me hardheaded --- go ahead --- but I think I'm going the low sal first & then try the other special diets if I continue to have problems. BUT --- I found Chobani PLAIN yogurt today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!! I'm doing pretty good w/o the sals & I'm getting iodine now... -

Good information IH. Thank you. I don't know if the chickory was/is enough to worry about but it was something I had added just prior to my hitting the wall with sals. Since sals are cumulative, I can't say that's what put me over the edge or not. I suspect it was simply a combo of lots of foods that had high sals. But I'm really, really getting better with... -

Thanks very much Skylark. I haven't been able to find any plain Yoplait. Only the fruity ones & I'm watching sals right now. Yes, if all else fails I will have to make my own. Thanks also for the VSL#3 info. -

Nana, I'm going to paste this quote from Prickly from just a few posts above. "When you go gluten-free your body starts resetting, healing - for lack of better terms. The first 6 months are really a free-for-all. Anything can and will (apparently) happen."<br style="color: rgb(44, 54, 68); font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; background-color: rgb... -
I was taking Culturelle but ran into a problem with sals & Culturelle has chickory root extract therefore high sals. I got some Solgar Advanced Multi-Billion Dophilus & find it has Sodium Alginate --- high iodine. I was doing better digestive wise when taking the probiotics. And I can eat yogurt but can't find any gluten-free plain --- they all have...

Sunflower oil then Dani? Sunflower oil is low sal. Also Canola oil but sunflower oil is better for you than Canola. -
Olivia, it's pretty overwhelming at first. I think everyone experiences it. I certainly did. You can't imagine giving up your favorite foods. For me it was biscuits --- I have always made my own. And there were a number of other things. And I did miss biscuits like crazy at first. Already I don't even think about them. And you wonder what in the world you...

Well, I can answer 2 of your questions. Gastric bypass WILL NOT cause celiac disease. If you are diagnosed with celiac disease & do not do the gluten free diet it is extremely dangerous to your health. You will "kill" all your villi in your small intestine & can get lymphoma & an entire host of other auto immune diseases. If you are diagnosed... -

Thanks very much. Will do. Nice to know who to go to. -
LOL! Nana, I joined Nov. of 2011 & was gluten-free 10/11 or so I thought. but the good people on here helped me out right from the beginning. I have learned MUCH. There is always more to learn though. Bits of wisdom here & there. I have dh (dermatitis herpitiformis; the skin manifestation of celiac) & I recently had a "meltdown?" of frustration...

Ooooooooooo, To me, if it isn't Hellman's it isn't mayo. Could you ask your mom which one it is please? I looked at all of them in the store the other day & couldn't find one w/o soy so maybe my store doesn't carry that particular one of Hellman's but if I know which one it is then I will find a store that carries it!

One day Prickly, one day, it will happen for both of us --- "the other side". Now, I have one or two questions so that I don't screw myself up again. I got some Solgar Advanced Multi-Billion Dophilus. the ingredients are: Open Original Shared Link And I want to take some L-Glutamine Open Original Shared Link Is there anything in... -

A big thank you to those who steered me in the direction of sals! I'm getting better! YAY! The dh is laying down & I'm now down to just a few places that flare up once or twice a day. I look back & see that I was maxing out on sals. I was eating lots of sweet potatoes, eating raisins, RED apples like crazy, oranges & tangerines everyday &... -
Great to know IH! Thanks! Yes, I'm not a fan of soy anyway BUT it IS in everything. I do tolerate the little bit in my gluten-free mayo but am careful to be stingy when spreading it on. I'm a big mayo fan & it's been hard to control my desire to liberally douse the bread with mayo. Such a fan of mayo that I can (could) eat it with a spoon like other...
