Prickly is right in every respect. I think it has a lot to do too with what stage you're in with the evolution of your dh. And by that I'm mostly speaking of the long term. When my dh first appeared years ago, I had no idea of celiac or dh & i would just get random tiny bumps or blisters on my hands. I don't remember any symmetry being involved. They...

ARCHIVED Epic Story - Any Advice Appreciated
squirmingitch replied to kmccormick61583's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Quinoa is great for both protein & slow carbs. I eat Ancient Harvest brand traditional Quinoa. Here are the values per serving: Carbs - 31g, Protein 6g. It has kind of a nutty flavor & a nice little soft crunch to it. Very easy to cook up. A whole grain that's easily digestible. You can cook up enough for say 3 days worth & just refrigerate it... -

squirmingitch replied to Mark.'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've had all of these symptoms & more. They are scary & uncomfortable. Sometimes I felt like my knees were going to buckle. I have gone in & out of this phase several times now. Each time the "phase" seems to not last as many days nor be as severe. Hang in there. Also be warned of the heart pounding that can go on for hours or even all day &... -

ARCHIVED Amaranth For Breakfast
squirmingitch replied to squirmingitch's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I agree. And in my case my hubby would never have tried ANY of these foods --- strictly a meat & potatoes guy --- AND he would have grumbled so much about me trying them that it just wouldn't have been worth listening to him. But now...... he can't & doesn't say a thing! I have always been more naturally inclined to eat this way --- whole grains,... -
ARCHIVED Amaranth For Breakfast

Karen, I got Bob's Organic Whole Grain Amaranth. It's sort of a maize color & the seeds are about the size of poppy seeds, maybe even a tad smaller. -
ARCHIVED Amaranth For Breakfast
squirmingitch replied to squirmingitch's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thank you burdee for the response. I intend to try it in the morning. Think I'll be brave & try it all by itself & see what it really tastes like. -
If I cook up some Amaranth for breakfast how would you say is the best way to eat it? Like cream of wheat with milk & honey? Or something else. I haven't had Amaranth yet. But I'm game. What do you say it tastes like? I have some ground flax seed I can sprinkle on it. Or sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds or pecans. Suggestions? P.S. I have dh &...

ARCHIVED How Much Iodine
squirmingitch replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
No one can say exactly how many mcg. of iodine one should limit oneself to. But here are some links to give you ideas of what foods are high or middle or low. Open Original Shared Link https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/89923-iodine-levels-in-dairy-products/ There are many links within this particular site & it's easy to get lost & not remember... -

I hear you about the iodine thing. Geez, we have so many rules to learn about gluten & it seems there are just about as many rules about iodine! I understand psoriasis & eczema both are quite common with celiacs & furthermore that lots of people who aren't celiacs (or at least don't know they are) but have eczema or psoriasis find that it... -

Thank goodness psoriasis is not one of the things I have (crossing fingers that I never get it!) so I can't give you any direction there. But I'm sure there are others out there who can speak from experience & tell you what you need to know. And there are NO dumb questions on here. I would like to chime in with Prickly about the iodine. I did... -

I would like to apologize, I made a mistake in my last post & stated Sees candies & chocolates was who I contacted about the iodized salt. I have edited the post. I meant to type Nuts.com not Sees. It is Nuts.com whom I requested change their iodized salt to non iodized. I just wanted to clear that up. Sorry for typing the wrong company in. So... -

Read these threads all the way through. Check out Dapsone thoroughly before you jump on it. Be aware of what you take & what it may do to you both good & bad. Believe me, I wish there were magic for this beast. Personally, I wouldn't touch Dapsone with a 10 ft. pole even though I am a squirmingitch! AND even if I didn't have a sulfa allergy. https... -

See, you ;earn something new everyday! Thank you very much Prickly --- I didn't know that about pickling salt. YAY! I can add pickles back in & olives too. Does that mean corned beef is back on the list also? Please tell me it's true. Pleeeeeeeease. Charli61, don't be fooled by the "iodized salt is more expensive than non iodized". I just got an email... -

I will mention that I do have some iodine ---- when I've been watching the iodine really closely & have the outbreaks under control (none for a week) then I will go ahead & have selected foods with iodine. !/2 glass of milk, maybe a piece of ham --- just maybe 2 or 3 things in a weeks time. I seem to be able to get away with that. I consider them... -
ARCHIVED Using Otc Anti-Itch Cream On Dh
squirmingitch replied to BeFree's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
As to my experience there is nothing you put ON the dh that makes it either better OR worse. Unless maybe you rubbed gluten directly into it. And I doubt anyone would willingly try that to find out what happens. You can use things that help the itching but that's about it. -

Me 4. Never had an infection in the dh. Also, curiously, I used to get a lot of keratoses but since the dh reared it's ugly head ---- no ketatosis. I agree with the others; I think the immune system is attacking the skin so hard that no other skin problems can survive. -

I got tired of trying to remember all the foods to avoid when going low iodine so I began making a list & taped it on the kitchen wall the other day. I know I'm missing a few things on it, some of the beans for one. This is a compilation from a number of sites. Dairy, egg yolks, seafood, carragheenan, garlic, coconut (which would include flour, oil ... -

Well, you can just shove that chunk o' cake straight through the computer screen! Have fun in Croatia. There are worse things than cooking, traveling, eating & reading.
