ARCHIVED A Milestone
red island replied to egallag's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had that moment one Sunday in December when I realized that I had spent the whole afternoon Christmas shopping and never once thought about where the washrooms were located in the stores. Normal life is Awesome. -
ARCHIVED 'glutening' Symptoms With No Explanation
red island replied to LGC88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I first went gluten free I bought brown rice thinking it would be better for me than white rice. Well that stirred up my IBS (extreme cramping and diarrhea and pain beyond belief). I had to switch back to white rice for a few months til my poor guts were able to tolerate the fibre again. And I had issues with soy although that seems to have passed. I... -
I would just keep in mind that if you have cc issues down the road and are not sure where they came from that it could be the pans. I resisted replacing mine cause they were so expensive and the kitchen refit was already costing a small fortune. But I was not able to become totally gluten free til I stopped using those pans. But I did find a couple tiny...

ARCHIVED Accidental Glutening, Healing Neuro & Abdominal Issues
red island replied to luciddream928's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I found that the only thing I can do to help when I get glutened is immodium - it sort of helps with the abdominal issues (barely) Otherwise I just try to sleep it off, I am bad for 48 hours so thats 2 days lost. I havent eaten out in months and that includes take out coffee and store prepared salads which I really miss but I just dont feel I can trust other... -
ARCHIVED Should Mental Recovery Take This Long?
red island replied to bbdailey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree with eatmeat4good. My brain fog, anxiety and wild mood swings never went away til I totally replaced all my kitchen stuff that wasnt glass or stainless steel. Also, 2 out of the 3 times that I knew how I'd been glutened were from eating or drinking at someone else's home. My symptoms are pretty consistent in that they show up 4 hours later. I thought... -
ARCHIVED Glutenfree In Punta Cana Dominican Republic

Oh!!! Worst case scenario would not be eating sparingly - it would be the dire consequences of cc! -
ARCHIVED Glutenfree In Punta Cana Dominican Republic
red island posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hi Everyone, I booked a trip to Punta Cana shortly after I was diagnosed. Before I knew just how many things gluten was in and before I fell victim to the dreaded cross-contamination and its consequences. Now I am a month away from my vacation and need some advice on what kind of foods I should be fairly safe eating. It is a large resort with mostly buffet... -
ARCHIVED Help
red island replied to bbdailey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was severely hypothyroid before I was diagnosed with Celiac, I had two really good weeks right after going gluten free then ups and downs. My hormone levels jumped around alot too and I had to keep a good eye on my thyroid levels . So I would think you could get your thyroid retested and see where you stand and check with your pharmacist to make sure there... -
ARCHIVED Just A Vent- In Laws Are Making Fun Of Celiac
red island replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
To my great surprise, my family has been highly supportive of my diet and my elderly parents even went to the library and read books on celiac. I thought Wow, this is great that I have so much support from my family. Unfortunately they live far away. My friends whose problems I have listened to and been supportive of them for years are another story. Most... -
ARCHIVED Been Off Gluten For Weeks Now, Why Are My Teeth Still Shifting?
red island replied to Silencio's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My gums are still sore and bleed sometimes and I was diagnosed 4 months ago. I know I had a few problems with cross contamination early on but none in the last month for sure. I know my bones are good so I am a bit concerned about why this is still going on. Plan to see the dentist next week so if I find out anything that could help you, I will post. -
ARCHIVED I Feel Overwhelmed And It's Only Day 1
red island replied to KotaKate88's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In the beginning I just stuck with a few of my favorite gluten-free brands and a whole lot of fruits and veggies as I was very fatigued by the time I was diagnosed. I also have had a very long history of diarrhea to the point where I would not eat before I went to town to do any shopping. While the diet seems restricted I actually have a whole lot more freedom... -
I don't usually enjoy New Years Eve - I've always found it depressing to see another year gone by but this year I found myself full of hope and anticipation for what 2012 will bring. I am 4 months into my diagnosis and things are finally clicking for me. So don't get discouraged, I found I had alot of ups and downs early on but now I see glimmers of my old...

That is an awsome list Irish Heart. I will be studying it myself. As for the endoscopy, I didn't enjoy it one little bit (they didn't give me enough drugs either) but I am glad I did it cause they found lots of damage but ruled out other things like cancer. Once I knew how much damage there was I quit worrying about why I was not improving as fast as I...

ARCHIVED Frustrated...feeling Sicker
red island replied to Metoo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I could not figure out why I was still getting glutened when I thought I was being so careful until I went thru my kitchen and replaced my plastic mixing bowls which had scratches in them. I have been fine for 2 weeks now so maybe something other than food could be a possibility. Also, after I started eating gluten free my reactions became much worse too... -
ARCHIVED Musings On The Lunch Room
red island replied to Jestgar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hear you....I never really noticed how badly my coworkers eat until I had to be aware of where they were setting their food down so I would not get contaminated. Its all salt fat sugar and chemicals. And then they say - oh dont you miss being able to eat this??? NO! -
Dont they inject the Butterball turkeys with some kind of oil to make them juicy? Maybe whatever is in the oil mixture got you.

ARCHIVED Anxious About Weird Symptoms, Looking For Support
red island replied to takesflight's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had facial tingling on both sides even after going gluten free in Sept, I had gotten cc'd several times during that period. Clamped down on my diet and became even more careful about cross contamination 2 weeks ago and the facial tingling has not occurred. I also had been having bouts of anxiety, depression and irritability all of which is getting better... -
ARCHIVED Gi Says Muscle And Joint Pain Has Nothing To Do With Celiac..
red island replied to Silencio's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My GI asked me if I had any of those symptoms and about 20 more and then he asked if I had anything more to add to the list. So there are informed docs out there, I think if you go back to your regular doc they can refer you to someone else. I would not waste any more time or energy with that one. -
ARCHIVED Reintroducing Vegetables
red island replied to cahill's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am having the same problem. Because of my IBS I was having alot of trouble with veggies and citrus fruits. Now I find I can eat oranges (not everyday) but I am still having to mash alot of my cooked veggies, I am trying to eat lots of sweet potatoes but things like peas are still iffy. I never thought about mashing them though. Thats a good idea. -
ARCHIVED Christmas Shopping Stories
red island replied to Booghead's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I did most of my Christmas shopping in a foggy gluten contaminated haze. I am back to normal now but just about had a bird when I was wrapping the gifts and saw what I had actually bought for friends and family. I am going to put a disclaimer in each package saying "I was not in my right mind when I bought this - please dont dump me cause I gave you a crappy... -
The first month or so after my diagnosis I had terrible nightmares about accidentally popping a regular cookie in my mouth, I'd wake up in a panic!

ARCHIVED "can You Eat This? What About That?"
red island replied to New Community Member's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed just before travelling home for Thanksgiving so I spent two weeks answering a gazillion questions. I am so sick of talking about myself! I am working over Christmas so I wont be going home but now I have to fend off all the neighbors who want to have me over for dinner (God love them - they are the best but I really need to just relax and... -
I'm 3 months into the diet and I have only just got up the energy to get back into the baking and cooking - I lived on microwave potatoes, meat and frozen veggies, and just making sure I ate healthy was exhausting for a long time. Now that I am feeling better the endless replacing of perfectly good kitchen utensils is what gets me down, I still find things...

ARCHIVED Mouth Sores
red island replied to Lady Jane's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sorry, I'm from the pre-computer era, I meant to say that my sores looked like that too and I was told by the dentist that it was a sign of active celiac or other autoimmune disease -
ARCHIVED Mouth Sores
red island replied to Lady Jane's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The reason I was eventually diagnosed with celiac was because of mouth sores. My dentist took one look and told me to get tested. That was 3 months ago and I still periodically get sore gums and mouth - not sure if from cc or because the celiacs is still active. I am using Biotene mouth wash and it seems to help.
