ARCHIVED Cheerios
xjrosie replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My daughter is celiac/diabetic, and we tried these. She has been eating them for about a month and have had no problems whatsoever. We did not get one of the boxes that we affected by the recall, fortunately. She eats these every single morning. When she is glutened, she doesn't get the physical symptoms, but her blood sugar drops to the 20s-30s after about... -
ARCHIVED Incredible bread!
xjrosie replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My daughter and I stumbled upon this loaf of bread, as her normal choice was not in stock. We shied away from Schar for being very dry and bland, but this loaf is the first that she has not toasted the bread before making a sandwich. -
ARCHIVED Werther's Original Hard Candy
xjrosie replied to 2Boys4Me's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ingredients: Sugar, Glucose Syrup (from Wheat or Corn), Cream, Condensed Whey, Butter, Cane Sugar Syrup, Salt, Soy Lecithin Emulsifier, Artificial Flavor. Allergy Information: Contains milk, soybeans and wheat. These are the ingredients for Werther's Original Hard Candies here in the USA. Candies manufactured in other countries may have different... -
ARCHIVED Intro With Lots Of Mixed Emotions
xjrosie replied to Kallismom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I went through something similar. I grew up with stomach aches, unexplained pains, severe anemia, hair falling out. At one point in high school I was on pills to reduce the acids in my intestine because of the sever abdominal pains I had. None of my friends can remember a time when I didn't complain of not feeling good after eating. My daughter, who is... -
ARCHIVED Nannying For Two Little Kids!
xjrosie replied to Victoria6102's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you want to try baking, ask the parents to pick up some Bob's Red Mill All Purpose Flour. It has been the best thing to replace regular flour that I've tried. Then you can bake again! As for eating, I would suggest finishing your meals right before getting theirs ready. Then you can eat safely and still tend to the kiddos while they're eating. -
ARCHIVED My Challenging 5 Year Old
xjrosie replied to Nads4kids's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It has occurred to me that my daughter might have been Celiac from birth. From day one, she was emotional, hard to reason with, impossible to deal with. Highly intelligent, but near failing because she refused to do homework. I couldn't wake her up in the morning without a fight. Getting dressed, brushing teeth/hair, taking showers - a constant fight. I would... -
ARCHIVED 1 Year In And Numbers Aren't Where They Should Be
xjrosie replied to Gluten Free Girls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would go with checking at school. It's probably easier for the 13 y.o. to comply because older kids don't normally have parents send snacks to school for birthday parties and such. If you haven't done so already, go to her school and talk to the principal and also any teachers your daughter has. They all need to be aware of her situation. Also, make... -
ARCHIVED Celiacs...(?) Gluten Sensitivity... Custodyand Visitation
xjrosie replied to celiac custody battle's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
First, document EVERYTHING. Take pictures, make a log, recordings...anything to keep records of her symptoms. Gather all the doctor's files you have in regard to her positive blood tests. Yes, take pictures of her poop. Date everything. Then, contact the free legal office in your area. If they won't help, start contacting every family lawyer to plead for... -
ARCHIVED Gluten And Tapioca Intolerant
xjrosie replied to LLAA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Schar makes a really good white bread. Gluten- and tapioca-free. Check out their website for where to buy it. -
I was hoping to take my kids somewhere new and decided to give Don Pablo's a try. I couldn't get on the internet because of the power outage and I couldn't cook, so I winged it. When we got there, I asked firsthand if they had gluten-free options, to which they replied that they did. So we waited for our table and when we were seated they handed us the...

ARCHIVED Flour And Starch Storage
xjrosie replied to bincongo's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If you do a lot of baking, it's unlikely that any of your flours and starches need anything special other than an airtight container. -
ARCHIVED Any Connection To Celiac And Urinary Urgency?
xjrosie replied to concernedmamma's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It is also a sign for diabetes and with having already been diagnosed with Celiac Disease, you should have your kid tested. Although, I'm sure by now you would know. -
ARCHIVED Height Gain Seems To Have Slowed Down

ARCHIVED Glutened At School
xjrosie replied to dilettantesteph's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I hate to say this, but even with a 504 plan and the schools wiping the desks/tables down, your kids will still get glutened. I say this because I do have a 504 plan in place and my daughter gets glutened at least once a week. Thankfully she doesn't get sick, but her sugar drops dramatically so it's still a problem. Have you seen how the tables are wiped... -
ARCHIVED Sharing A Hospital Gluten-Free Experience
xjrosie replied to T.H.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This stuff scares me. It has also prompted me to consider changing my major, from computers to Dietitian. I was thinking of becoming Head Lunch Lady at a school because that is also a place that needs some major education. None of my kids can eat at school because they have no idea about gluten or cross contamination. I know a school is not some place... -
I just pretend that they're all Celiac sufferers too, but not smart enough to stay away from the snacks. I imagine how they're going to suffer later in the bathroom. Then I chuckle and move on. May not totally help, but if you can distract your mind from the actual eating of snacks, maybe it will get you through. Good luck. I personally have a hallway...

ARCHIVED Had A Chef Ask Me
xjrosie replied to JoyfulGF's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I would give anything for my daughters to be able to eat whatever, whenever, again. So much planning and preparation have to go in to everything we do. My youngest feels like a freak compared to the little girls who can scarf snacks anytime. -
We eat out about twice a month. It's only been since December that I had my kids' diagnoses though. We have actually been out more frequently than twice a month as of now, but now that I'm learning more creative things to cook, we are going back to our regular thing. We've eaten at Buffalo Wild Wings, BD's Mongolian Barbeque (they will cook yours in a...

ARCHIVED Super Picky Eater Who Eats Almost Nothing But Gluten
xjrosie replied to Minette's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think if I were in your situation, I would take all the things out of the house that she can't have. Replace them with what she can have. If she protests, put your foot down and say, "This is what we have. You can choose from these things." She may be stubborn at first, but eventually she should open up to new ideas. Also, my daughter who was naturally... -
ARCHIVED Medical Alert Bracelets
xjrosie replied to brandey128's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree. I have two daughters with Celiac and each of them have another autoimmune disease that they have to take medication for. I do not want them ingesting gluten whatsoever because it interferes with the absorption of their prescribed medications. For a diabetic, it prevents the absorption of carbs, which is needed if you're injecting insulin to break... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Vs Gluten Intolerance
xjrosie replied to rachelh4207's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Keep in mind that kids are kids and things happen that won't always be related to gluten. Constipation happens a lot when you're dehydrated or even low on fluid in your body. It could be something she ate (too much cheese or something). Up her water intake a few ounces a day and see what it does. Honestly, I think that if the constipation were a result... -
ARCHIVED Quick & Easy Breakfast Ideas For Kids
xjrosie replied to nchalona's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Something new at our house for kids on the go: Schar white bread roll toasted, with chocolate/hazelnut spread (NOT Nutella) and Marshmallow Fluff. I don't care so much about the nutrients in breakfast. It's more important that I get them to eat something. I pack excellent lunches and make great dinners, so that about covers it. Anyone know of a way... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Pain Medications
xjrosie posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I found that the Meijer brand of medications are largely gluten-free. They have a list on their website under "Healthy Living" which will list all items they carry in their stores (store brand and national brand) that are gluten-free. Upon searching the list for the Ibuprofin I carry with me all the time, I found that their list of medications is quite extensive... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Rotisserie Chicken
xjrosie replied to MaryJones2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I worked in the deli at Kroger. You should be able to eat any of the rotisserie chickens there. They don't put any other flavorings on other than the barbeque sauce and lemon pepper, and I believe both of those are gluten free. To be on the safe side, ask the deli workers, they'll help you out. -
Absolutely gorgeous (my kids, that is)!! But, in all honestly, I may be biased. As for the holiday feast - I would have to start cooking four days in advance!!
