ARCHIVED Latex Allergy
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, I think I might go with a bracelet just because I'm going off to college and I would hate to have something go wrong when I'm away from my parents/anyone who could advocate for me. My symptoms aren't life threatening, I don't think, but I'd hate to have it develop into something worse. As I'm gluten-intolerant, I don't think I need that on a medic... -
So I've noticed my skin reacts to band-aids etc. We thought it was adhesive, but I tried latex free bandages (that still had adhesive) and no reaction. I've had problems with rubber gloves and other latex-containing products in the past. I know it's not related to gluten in any way, but is it a good idea to wear a medic alert bracelet when dealing with...

ARCHIVED Birthday Cake?
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to Sage122's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Cherrybrook Kitchen makes a pretty good cake mix that can be made easily dairy-free. They also make a frosting mix (don't buy the pre-made stuff, just the mix) that can be made dairy free (all products are inherently dairy free, but you add the milk you want - rice milk, almond milk, etc. ). The frosting requires butter/margarine, which you could make dairy... -
ARCHIVED Are My Results 100% Negative?
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to wendy74's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Or you could be gluten intolerant. That would make your blood tests negative too. It's possible for one person to be celiac and one to be gluten sensitive in one family, though I admit your chances of celiac are higher. -
ARCHIVED Recipe Suggestions?
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've asked about a Crock Pot, and my RA is finding out for me. I don't think Foreman grills are allowed period because they have an open burner. I might be allowed to bring one and store it. -
ARCHIVED Recipe Suggestions?
GlutenFreeAustinite posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm starting my freshman year in just over three weeks, and I am gonna need MAJOR help in the cooking department. I'm either going to be cooking all my own food, or most of my own food, and my only regularly accessible kitchen is the one the entire dorm shares. I have to supply my own utensils, which isn't a problem, but I was wondering if anyone had any... -
If you've never done one, be aware of how your body can react. I've juice fasted as part of church fundraisers several times and done horribly. I get a bad headache from all the sugar, jitters, nausea, extreme crankiness -- in other words, I don't react well, and will probably not be able to fast again. My sister, also prone to headaches, gets nasty ones...

ARCHIVED What Else Can Cause Celiac Damage To Villi?
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GottaSki's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Could it be refractory sprue, the type that is non-responsive to being gluten-free? -
I didn't have MRSA, but I did have a very persistent staph infection on my face a few years ago. The test was negative for MRSA, but it was really hard to get rid of. I was also at boarding school in the middle of rural Wisconsin, so I have no idea what tests were done, or if they really were negative. I've also had recurrent yeast infections since I hit...

ARCHIVED Outrageous Things I Have Said And Done!
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know the envelopes don't have gluten, but they always make me feel a bit queasy if I lick too many. That and they just taste nasty. -
ARCHIVED Now Dairy Free As Well?
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to lynxigirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was dairy free for quite a while when I first went gluten-free back in 2010. I was able to tolerate things like butter and heavy whipping cream, but actual milk/cheese/ice cream/other dairy gave me huge problems. I gradually was able to add it back in after being strictly gluten free, so maybe you can too. Just take it easy...it's really common for those... -
ARCHIVED I'm Feeling Lonely Because Of Celiac
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to DS29790bb's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm 18 and Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerant, and I'm in the process of trying to work with my college about mandatory meal plans for freshmen. They can't properly accommodate so it's looking like I will most likely have an exemption, which is what I wanted, but it's a bit depressing too as it means I can't really eat with my friends in the dining hall. It sucks... -
ARCHIVED Is Celiac Disease Always Inherited From Birth On?
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to Dugudugu's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From the limited knowledge I have, yes it can. It may "exist" in you from birth, but symptoms and/or damage can be triggered by something that happens in your life (stress, other medical problems, pregnancy, etc.) -
ARCHIVED Recurrent Yeast (Tmi, Sorry)
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm definitely gonna check on corn then! I think I'm corn free at this point anyway but it'll take time. Thanks! www.wholeapproach.com is the one I'm using for candida. -
ARCHIVED Recurrent Yeast (Tmi, Sorry)
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That is a good point. I'm in the process of cutting out corn (I have a terrible craving for it, which I know is a symptom of intolerance) and fruits/grains. My plan is to do a really intense diet and then add things back in to test whether they are problematic. -
ARCHIVED Recurrent Yeast (Tmi, Sorry)
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Oh goodness! That sounds awful. The terconazole seems to be helping, but I don't think it will help the white coating on my tongue that looks suspiciously like candida. -
ARCHIVED Recurrent Yeast (Tmi, Sorry)
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks Kim! I got my glucose tested and that's apparently normal so I think I"m okay there. I'm switching over to unscented Ivory (I had some cheap stuff in my shower) and I'll try supplements next. I'm planning to start the diet tomorrow and I'll be seeing a naturopath before I leave for school in four weeks. -
ARCHIVED Recurrent Yeast (Tmi, Sorry)
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Oh, Mitzi, your story doesn't give me hope for terconazole's success! o.O But I too am starting the strict Candida diet tomorrow...eliminating fruits, grains, sweets (they were mostly gone anyway), etc. Hmmmm, Gluten-Free.....I have a strong suspicion about corn, I crave it like you wouldn't believe, which makes me think I have some sort of intolerance... -
ARCHIVED Recurrent Yeast (Tmi, Sorry)
GlutenFreeAustinite posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've had chronic yeast infections since I was thirteen. Every month before my period, I'd get one, and apparently my mom was the same at my age. My doctor gave me Diflucan to take once a week for 6 months, and for a while, it worked. Over the last couple of weeks, I noticed my typical yeast symptoms and went back to my doctor. She cultured it (owwww... -
ARCHIVED Excessive Thirst
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yeah, I'm absolutely terrified that it's diabetes. Lots of people in my family have type 2, no type 1 that I know of, but I'll hopefully hear soon. I've had recurrent yeast infections (despite Diflucan/fluconazole), slow healing infections, etc. My symptoms match, I just hope it's not. -
ARCHIVED Excessive Thirst
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, I saw my doctor today, and she ordered blood and urine tests. So I'm waiting on the results of those, hopefully tomorrow (sticker on the urine cup said STAT in giant letters so I'm thinking they want those done quickly). I can't seem to stay full or drink enough water; hopefully I'll get answers soon. And if it's a potassium deficiency, I definitely... -
ARCHIVED Excessive Thirst
GlutenFreeAustinite posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hey everyone, I just went gluten-free again after a three month gluten challenge--dx'ed non-celiac gluten intolerant. I'm currently taking doxycycline, clindamycin topical gel, and prednisone (just finished that nasty little steroid today). Starting yesterday, I've been extremely thirsty. I can't get enough water, and even when my stomach feels... -
ARCHIVED Corn Avoidance
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to Razzle Dazzle Brazell's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I don't know anyone with a corn intolerance, but I know lots of people use glass or aluminum containers, both of which would be perfectly safe....though I'm not sure how much corn there really is in plastic. -
ARCHIVED Getting Out Of A Meal Plan At College
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yes, I called the disability office this morning and they were MUCH more helpful than the director of food services, thank heavens. I'm now waiting to hear back from my doctor and schedule an appointment so I can get the documentation. I'm going to have my GP do it as opposed to my GI doctor because she knows more of my history. My GI doctor is sending... -
ARCHIVED Getting Out Of A Meal Plan At College
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I spoke with dining services and I'm not sure how I feel. They cited their gluten free cooler, and I've been there. It literally had one loaf of bread and some pizza crusts. They said the guy who does the pizzas could make me one, but it would be prepared in the same area as regular pizzas. I'd eat mainly rice and boiled vegetables...I don't trust anything...
