ARCHIVED Moving To France, Very Gluten Sensitive - Help!
Carebear replied to Carebear's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks so much for all the great responses! I haven't been on iherb.com, but it looks fantastic and will likely be a lifesaver. BelleVie, thank you for the reminder that anyone who doesn't take the time to understand truly isn't worth the trouble. It will be a tough adjustment with multiple likely slip ups in the beginning, but I think it will be a truly...- 13 replies

ARCHIVED Newbie Adjusting The Changes In Socializing
Carebear replied to Wheatie NOT's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A friendly warning - when I was at the one month mark, I could handle all kinds of CC and gluten traces. As my diet became cleaner, however, I became much more sensitive. Please be careful! -
ARCHIVED Did Anyone See Friday's Ellen Show?
Carebear replied to WinterSong's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree, that is sad!!! I feel truly blessed to have a husband who has a digestive disease as well. He totally gets it, as do any friends who were around when I was diagnosed (I was sooooo sick, and very very pale and thin). Both my husband and I see media in this vein, and it's so disappointing. Ignorant people sure can be jerks! I've had ex boyfriends... -
ARCHIVED Moving To France, Very Gluten Sensitive - Help!
Carebear posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hello! I am moving to Grenoble, France for work. From what I hear, many French don't believe in celiac and gluten intolerance! I'm very nervous, and am considering bailing on the job! I am very sensitive to cross contamination (my house is entirely gluten free and I don't eat out, or many packaged gluten free foods). I feel pretty good about feeding...- 13 replies

Hi all, I'm having the hardest time playing with my rabbit without getting sick! He's a really sweet animal and I've had him 5 years and really, really don't want to part with him. Whenever I take him out a lot and spend a lot fo time with him (which he requires - he's needy!), I get cc symptoms. This has been going on for a year and a half now since...

ARCHIVED Endurance Issues And Exercise Intolerance
Carebear replied to Jen-1984's topic in Sports and Fitness
I definitely had problems like this when I was first diagnosed and when glutened now - even if it was only a small amount. It was AWFUL! I mountaineer, so I went from 20+ mile and crazy elevation gain hiking/climbing trips to barely being able to move around my apartment. Do you have edema? Bad edema days make me feel weighty and sluggish (and I am weighty... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Experience This?
Carebear replied to rebeccanicole88's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Are you sure they were hives? Did they show up immediately or fairly soon after? It definitely sounds like an allergy, but I've had problems where i touch gluten and get a dry itch rash ~2 hours later. ick. I really hope you figure it out! -
ARCHIVED Cealiac For Two Years And I Still Have Trouble With It
Carebear replied to AlexandarZ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Some of us are more sensitive than the 10 or 20 ppm limit they put on gluten free foods. I have only a small handful (literally small, maybe 3-5?) processed products I can tolerate. It's also possible that you have other intolerances. Have you tried giving up dairy? soy? fructose? -
ARCHIVED Cross-Contamination
Carebear replied to eleanorj's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I know for me there was a "grace period", where cutting out gluten as an ingredient in anything but still using the same pots and pans (though thoroughly cleaned) was totally ok for me, and definitely helped me get a handle on things without an added pressing stress. After a while gluten-free, my sensitivity and my reaction got stronger, so I definitely... -

Hmmm I'd say that lines up pretty well with my experiences with those gluten-free beers! Thanks for sharing! -
ARCHIVED Help going gluten free
Carebear replied to girlonamission's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My staples: rice, meat, fish, eggs, nuts, canned winter squash, leafy greens, mushrooms, and a few other vegetables. That's about it, but there is a lot of variety just in those categories. There's also fruit, which I dont eat because I have a combo of oral allergy syndrome and am still fructose intolerant as part of the healing process from celiac. Do... -
ARCHIVED Cross Reactive Foods
Carebear replied to Emilem's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've had a lot of similar problems. I'm 9 months gluten free now, and cannot eat most grains (or at least in any reasonable quantity). I too have ended up on a pretty much paleo diet, and that has helped a bunch! Since getting things under control that way, I've been able to see some of the non-paleo items that I can still eat - for example sorghum and... -
ARCHIVED Fructose Malabsorption
Carebear replied to jessthirtytwo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have to chime in - 6 months gluten free, and I'm also so bloated all of a sudden!! I figured out it's fructose, but I can't seem to handle any carbs either. Paleo works great, but it's difficult to maintain while traveling and on backpacking trips. How long did this annoying bloaty phase last for you more healed folks? Nice to know I'm not alone, but... -
I agree, face mask and goggles! Wear as much clothing as possible, eat indoors (or even in your car!), change clothes often, wear a hat or a bandana. Rain shell? that should brush off easy... Good luck!!! Ooo, how about eating food you dont have to touch, like putting your face in the bag you packed it in or something. Or gloves to eat.

I go to Costco, and it saves my boyfriend and I a ton of money! They have really good quality fish and meat in bulk, as well as fruits and vegetables. I'm a super sensitive celiac, so I don't eat any processed foods other than olive oil and salt, but I know the processed things are a lot cheaper too. Rice and beans are another good item to get in bulk...

ARCHIVED Update
Carebear replied to banjos's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm glad you posted! It kills me when people notice gluten is bothering them and continue to eat it because they're "not diagnosed". I feel like so many people fall into this category, some of my family members included! -
ARCHIVED Safe Rice For Oat Intolerant Celiacs?
Carebear replied to Carebear's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh thanks Mateto! That's a brilliant idea! I'll head there this week. As for Lundberg, I dont believe it isn't oat cc'd. They use oats as their cover crop so there would likely be lots of cc (there's a video about it on the lundberg website). It gets me, dh and all! I know other super sensitives have had problems with it. gar! -
ARCHIVED Slowest Reaction Times?
Carebear replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I get some symptoms immediately, and that begins the cascade. The digestive stuff usually takes 2-3 days to show up. I do find that the longer I go without glutening myself, the longer it takes for the symptoms to show up. If it's traces, by the time I figure it out it's a reaction within 2 hours! I also find that certain foods bother me for a few weeks... -
ARCHIVED Safe Rice For Oat Intolerant Celiacs?
Carebear posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Do any of you super sensitives that react to oats and oat cc (i.e. - lundberg rice products) have a safe rice brand I could try? It's mucho important for some upcoming traveling. Thanks a bunch! -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Edema (In So Much Discomfort!)
Carebear replied to Emilem's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I absolutely get edema, EVERY single time I'm glutened. It's awful - in fact, I just got cc'd and I have it right now. It can take 10 days to 3 weeks after a gluten exposure for it to go away. I literally gain 8-12lbs (I've weighed) in 12ish hours. But it goes away completely. I have a separate set of clothing for when I get glutened (not kidding, I... -
ARCHIVED Seasonal Allergies Better?!?!?
Carebear replied to BabsV's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Mine may have gotten worse... but then again I think I may have gotten glutened. Anyone else get completely slammed with seasonal allergies when they're glutened?? -
ARCHIVED Woodchuck Cider Soy And Dairy Free?
Carebear replied to Carebear's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I called and they told me that the natural flavors are "apple flavoring", and are gluten, dairy and soy free. It's my understanding that if the flavor is specified (like "apple" instead of "natural"), it doesn't contain any other ingredients. I sure hope the extraction method doesn't involve gluten... anyone know? -
I've heard you can wash them with soap, blanch them to remove the red hull, and then wash them again with some success. Personally, I wouldn't try it. My symptoms are pretty severe and long-lasting though. Better safe than sorry...

ARCHIVED Glutened At Outback By Wrong Dish, How Long For Symptoms To Arrive And Then To Stop?
Carebear replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've had a reaction 3 days after. Ugh. I'm so sorry it got you. It takes me about 10 days to feel normal, and 2.5-3 weeks to be regular, but I think my case is a bit extreme. My best friend is fine after 2-3 days. Feel better! I recommend lots of herbal tea and rest. hug!
