  1. Thinking of you and your little one!
  2. Thanks! That was what I was looking for!
  3. I have a 5 year old who I believe has sleep apnea and who is about to be confirmed as Celiac. No doctor has believed me that she has sleep apnea (but I should know--I figured out on day 5 of her life that she had Apnea of Prematurity--holding her breath 45% of her sleep time--all the nurses in the hospital missed that for the 4 days she was there!!!). ...
  4. My DH and I are debating how best to "sanitize" the kitchen of gluten. We're trying to understand the science behind what destroys gluten. Here is all I've learned/found so far: gluten is not water soluble, gliadin is alcohol-soluble and glutenin is soluble in acids/alkalis. From wikipedia: Gluten is the composite of a gliadin and a glutelin, which...
  5. Thinking of you all!
  6. I vote Gluten Free Flour Garden too! Good luck!
  7. Just a really LAME vent that I'm going to miss my beloved toaster!!! It fits perfectly in our tiny kitchen and I can't find the same model!!! Ahhh...if that's all...we're in good shape! Thinking of everyone out there who has to purge, scrub, and go gluten free!!!
  8. Congratulations! I'm so glad to hear it went OK today! we should all watch out for sugar ...first I have to tackle the gluten thing! And congratulations on your successful celebration!
  9. Our cousins who have Celiac went to Zion National Park last summer and said that the National Park concessions had many gluten free options! They are a very conscientious family! Out of curiosity I started to look on the Zion site. There is a restaurant menu for the more fancy restaurant. On the bottom of the menu it says gluten-free options available...
  10. Hi there, Here's the quick version: After positive celiac disease diagnosis: - Test thyroid function (tsh levels) - Blood tests for nutritional deficiencies: B12, D, "macro" minerals including calcium, sodium, potassium and trace nutrients including iron, ferritin, zinc and copper - Adults: do a bone density test At one year mark and annually...
  11. We too are grocery stores, cooler, lots of picnics! We even take our camp stove with us! A picnic blanket or two helps a lot! We often stop at playgrounds and reststops. I find the kids get lots of exercise going up and down grocery store aisles The girls are lobbying for us to buy a freezer which plugs into the power point so we can have ice cream...
  12. Found an excellent guide in Spanish!!! Open Original Shared Link
  13. Hi there! What is the best gluten-free cookbook for kids with lots of great pictures in it? My girls LOVE to cook and I want to celebrate going gluten-free by giving them a great cookbook that we can make EVERYTHING from! Thanks!
  14. Dr. Gregory Harmon at UCLA 310-825-1597 (he was at UCSD and opened a Celiac Center at UCLA recently). Good luck!
  15. It's nice to be celebrated! You will handle it well, I'm sure! Since you'll have an audience, you can always use it for the springboard of "1 in 133 of us have celiac disease" and pass out the CDF "Am I the one" brochures! Most of all, congrats on your upcoming celebration!
  16. Hi KB--I found a great article in the current LIVING WITHOUT magazine (April/May 2012)!!! Page 19 has a great set of paragraphs on "What types of tests do I need once diagnosed and How often do I need follow-up tests and appointments?" I'm hoping you can get your hands on it before seeing the nutritionist on Friday! If not, I'll try to write a synopsis...
  17. Thanks! Dishwasher filter! Hadn't thought of that!!! Thank you!
  18. Hi Carol! Thinking of you! I'm so glad that the doctors will do the endoscopy asap, if needed so you only need to make that one trip. I'm so so sorry about how horrible gluten attacks your son's body. I'm wondering if he really needs to gluten load--it seems his body has such a significant response to gluten that even a small amount might be enough...
  19. I was just on Maui and had the treat of going to Hawaiian Moons health food store (I think that's what it was called). Tons of gluten-free products, same prices as mainland Whole Foods for the most part. Incidentally, my DH came across this good review of Celiac and Princeville on Kauaui: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60626-d1023257-r...
  20. You all are wonderful! Thank you!
  21. Thanks! And here's another crazy-maker: the kitchen counter!!! I think I need to re-grout it. Seriously, our house if from the 1950's and we have the original tile still...I love it...but watching all the crumbs get stuck in the crevices today was a bit nerve-wracking! Might be time for a glass of red wine!
  22. Hi there, Has anyone found information on Celiac in Spanish? We have an amazing babysitter whose first language is Spanish. I never know how much detail she understands in English, so I want to make sure I provide her with guidelines for keeping the kids safe in her language. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  23. I thankfully haven't put the knife in the knife block after using it, but who knows if a babysitter, friend, or HUSBAND may have???!!! This is the kind of thing that is crazy-making
  24. Thank you! I appreciate your input and experience very much! How do you deal with people coming to your house--family, playdates, etc. Do you allow people to bring food into your home? Thanks!
