  1. I travel way more than I would like to for work. I usually drive, which helps - and I can be gone for as long as a week at a time. I bought myself some nice glass tupperwares with locking lids, and I make a quinoa dish (mix quinoa with different veggies, whatever looks good, sometimes some olives, maybe some lemon juice and avocado) that can be eaten...
  2. thanks, user853 - i tried some of their small packets, but unfortunately maybe some of the flavors i picked were bad, but the sweetness was overwhelming. maybe if i didn't mix them with fruit, but they must have an awful lot of stevia! one drink i couldn't even drink it was so sweet - i tried to freeze it, and eat like a frozen treat, but still too sweet...
  3. Environmental allergens cause your body to produce excessive amounts of mucous (which causes rhinitis, or a runny nose, and other problems). I would get tested for allergies. I was on allergy shots for three years and they have helped TREMENDOUSLY. I used to carry around a tissue all the time for a runny nose, now only when I'm sick or if the allergens...
  4. The problem was the lack of a microwave - I didn't mind sharing the oven, but didn't want to run the oven for an extra half hour (frozen meals take a long time in the oven, much longer than a frozen pizza) and cost my friend that energy for a small meal.
  5. I hope I can look forward to this soon - I'm 32 and am tired. Been gluten-free for about four months, and still have a lot of vitamin deficiencies (maybe part of why I'm tired, I guess). I really want to get back to working out, but have a hard time starting out as slow as I need to - I want to jump back into where I was. Looking forward to recovering like...
  6. I do feel a little better now than I did several months ago, but I still pretty much just want to sleep. I need to cut back on the caffeine, I think (most days I just have a strong cup of black British tea first thing), and just let myself sleep a little later. I'm probably only getting an average of 7 hours a night, so I definitely need to work on that....
  7. The problem is I think some people just have poor habits or manners. Or, to give some credit, maybe their dishwashers at home are great and they're able to leave food caked on and have everything come out sparkling clean. There may come a point when an email or flyer is appropriate - and it could be written in a way that highlights the issues of hygiene...
  8. Oh, that's really good to know. We're supposed to get a Trader Joe's soon! The hemp protein powder that one of our local health food stores has has something in it I don't want - I don't remember what, though. I'm excited about TJ's, but I hope they don't take too much business away from our local ones. I've read varying reviews about how gluten-free...
  9. Thanks for the responses! It was interesting for me to notice the shift. Of course, I still have my bad moments - last night, very hungry and tired in the grocery store, looking for a quick and easy dinner to take to a friend's house (he was having pasta). Grabbed a "regular" pizza for my husband, and went to grab a gluten-free Amy's meal for me - and...
  10. Good to know! I definitely saw some posts about specific brands and even specific flavors being gluten-free and not, but I'll just always check with manufacturers to be sure. Lots of them are just stapled shut anyway, of course!
  11. Hello again Tennisman, I know this is no fun, and I'm so sorry you're having to go through it! Hydrodistension is when they fill your bladder with water to see how much it can hold. It is also easier to see the little "sores" that are typical of IC when the bladder is distended, so it's used as part of the diagnosis for IC. IC bladders tend not to hold as...
  12. In writing a response to someone's question, I realized that I was talking about preparing non-gluten-free foods as "special" (instead of gluten-free foods as "special"). I do most of the cooking in our house, which is just my husband and I (well, and our dog, but I don't cook his food!). I used to think of the gluten-free food I'd buy as the special...
  13. Does anyone have suggestions for a gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free protein supplement? I would prefer a powder to add to smoothies (unflavored). I've tried Jarrow rice and Plant fusion, but the former gets gooey and the latter has too much sugar/sugar replacement. I've tried some small packets of the RAW protein powders, but a lot of them have wheat...
  14. Hi tennisman, I've had Cystoscopy, with no anaesthetic. (I did not have hydrodistension - if you're getting hydro, from what I've read, you'll need general anaesthetic.) I am a woman, so our experiences might be different, but I'd be happy to answer any questions. Is this to look for bladder damage related to IC?
  15. Panda123, these are all great suggestions. I don't know if I noticeably react, either, but I have noticed an improvement in my bowels. I'm looking forward to not having to take a ton of supplements. My suggestion is to order some books, particularly "Real Life with Celiac Disease" and read up. That book, in particular, is good because the chapters are...
  16. Our kitchen is disgusting. I wish we had a dishwasher. People just leave their coffee cups and plates for... a magic kitchen fairy? I keep my food in the fridge and sometimes microwave my lunch (with the tupperware lid on, but loosened) but otherwise stay away. I'm tempted to start using one of those nice new soft-sided insulated bags if that'd keep my lunch...
  17. Karinp, I think once you start doing research (especially as an RN) you'll see lots of other reasons why not to cheat. As others mentioned, it's hard enough to keep gluten out of your diet even being really vigilant about it (things I never imagined to be iffy: imitation crab meat, tea bags!), nevermind the issue of CC, which is a big one. I also don...
  18. Karinp, I'm glad your doctor was so fast with the response - that's great! (I had to wait two weeks for my biopsy results!) I think mourning is totally appropriate for many people. This will be a big change. I had a few "meltdowns" at first, and still when I'm traveling get frustrated trying to find food (so I always pack lots of snacks now). But the...
  19. Shauna, Thank you for your post. I think Dr. Oz (and his guests, and their ignorance and poor choice of words) have obviously hit a nerve, but I think he was trying, however unsuccessfully, to encourage people (1) not to choose a gluten-free diet to think it's going to help them lose weight (thanks to a lot of other misinformation out there) and (2) to...
  20. Karinp, my GI told me that my intestines looked totally normal after my procedure and made a follow-up three month appointment. They mailed a copy of the initial results, which showed inflammation. Two weeks later her nurse called and said the biopsied showed Celiac, and to start a gluten-free diet. They sent a very not-helpful three-page photocopied...
  21. Rosetapper23 and ravenwoodglass, that sounds awful - I'm glad you've identified the problem and can remove it successfully! I think it's important, though, that people who don't have to exclude any specific vitamin or nutrient or mineral not do so. In an effort to eat whole foods and generally healthfully, if we shop only or primarily at local farmer's...
  22. Peppa_minto, I don't know. I do remember having GI issues when I took it, but I think they warn about that even for "normal" folks. I didn't know I had Celiac then, so I wasn't researching my meds. Elmiron was not good for me, though - I had the side effects. I also am not sure whether I have IC, so I didn't appreciate taking it! (It didn't help me, but since...
  23. I had one urologist's nurse tell me that I have IC. The urologist didn't know whether I did or not (despite scoping my bladder), and tried me on overacting bladder meds, and Elmiron. Neither worked (my main symptom is just the feeling of having to go - whether I do or not), and he recommended an Interstim implant. I'm 32, and want nothing to do with such...
  24. thewiseguy, Juliebove's tool looks like it may be helpful to you - I'd try to look at what you consume over several weeks, though. The reason many of us take so many vitamins and supplements isn't because we are missing something from eating gluten-free, necessarily, it's because we aren't absorbing the nutrients from what we do eat. That said, a...
  25. I don't do dairy, but smoothie places and yogurt places are everywhere. I guess the potential for cc might be high, but seems it might be high in most food court-type places. I think most smoothie places - unless they're really busy - would be happy to wash out a blender really well for you. Then you could ask about the ingredients and could likely get something...
