ARCHIVED Back Country Backpacking And Food
archaeo in FL replied to msrncpn's topic in Sports and Fitness
Adding to an old thread, I know, but wanted to share my favorites: instant mashed potatoes are my absolute favorite backpacking food. I even eat them for breakfast. I am partial to rehydrating meals that you make in a freezer bag - they don't require anything but hot water (and maybe a coozie to keep them warm), and then you just seal the bag and back it... -
ARCHIVED Post Workout Protein Shakes
archaeo in FL replied to Mr. Pep'r's topic in Sports and Fitness
I use the Vega Sport during weightlifting and crossfit-style workouts, because it dissolves well in water (I use more water than called for). I use PlantFusion after in a smoothie; I only ever buy the unflavored version of that because I mix it with fruit, but the flavors may be a good option. PlantFusion is the easiest on my stomach that I've found.- 5 replies

ARCHIVED Fitness And Celiac Question
archaeo in FL replied to aidan-802's topic in Sports and Fitness
Hello Aidan, To build muscle, you really have to eat a lot of protein. It can be difficult to eat enough! Some folks recommend 1 g per pound of bodyweight (particularly if you want to build muscle), and you shouldn't get less than 1 g per pound of lean mass (your body weight minus body fat), particularly if you're lifting. I'm doing a fitness challenge... -
ARCHIVED This Itchy Skin Has Got To Stop!
archaeo in FL replied to tonalynn's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm going to echo Nikki2777 on this - I have been trying to find out why I have elevated liver enzymes, and in the process of researching it found that itchy skin is often associated with liver problems. Please go see a doctor and explain, and request liver enzyme "liver function" tests. -
I would always bring a back-up, even if it's a collection of fresh fruit, nut bars, chips (the catered meal would be indulgent, so why not be a little indulgent too?!), whatever you can manage depending on how you're traveling. I had a great experience recently at a wedding that I expected not to be able to eat anything at - I'd prepped a whole meal and was...

ARCHIVED Best Way To Train For Half Marathon?
archaeo in FL replied to archaeo in FL's topic in Sports and Fitness
Hi Jebby, Thanks for the response! For some reason I didn't get a notification that you'd responded. I'm not on Daily Mile right now, but I do use RunKeeper. Do you only use Daily MIle? I've never looked at it. I got through a 14-mile run about a month ago, with a friend, on a route he'd run as a half-marathon race (not sure why it sound up being... -
ARCHIVED Anybody Else Have Endometriosis And/or Interstitial Cystitis As Well?
archaeo in FL replied to livelifelarge24's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had a doctor tell me I had IC based on the potassium test - catheter, water, potassium, comparison of pain - but every step hurt like hell which, to me, is no clear diagnosis (if even water hurts there's something else going on, like the dang catheter scraping up my insides!). He then scoped me (without hydrodistension) and didn't see any damage or inflammation... -
ARCHIVED Workouts Causing Irregular Bleeding?
archaeo in FL replied to cambrozi's topic in Sports and Fitness
Hi cambrozi, I'd also suggest asking your OB/GYN whether you might have endometriosis. It's incredibly common, and often (but not always) causes bad cramps. I've had irregular bleeding most of my life, and started taking birth control when I was 15 because my cramps were so bad. I'm currently getting lots of cramps and some bleeding after working out... -
I have a really sensitive stomach too, and I almost can't work out other than first thing in the morning. Before a long run on the weekend, I'll have a spoon of peanut butter, and that's plenty for me (7-10 mile runs), though sometimes I don't eat at all before a long run (and never before a first-thing-in-the-morning short run). If I am going to work...

ARCHIVED Best Way To Train For Half Marathon?
archaeo in FL replied to archaeo in FL's topic in Sports and Fitness
Nearly there - time to do a 12 mile run this weekend and the half marathon (not a race, just the distance) the next. I usually run alone, but have a friend running the half-marathon distance with me. Just in time, too, as the heat has arrived here in Florida. Taking it slow (stretched a 12-week training program to about 16 weeks), trying to keep mileage... -
ARCHIVED Tummy Ache After Quinoa - Other Non-Grain Subs?
archaeo in FL replied to archaeo in FL's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
SensitiveMe and JNBunnie1, thanks for the response! I have a taste issue with buckwheat - it tastes like plastic to me. I've heard other people say some people think it tastes soapy, but I think maybe my palate is funny (I also don't like cilantro, which some people think tastes like soap, but just triggers my gag reflex - yuck!). I've hard the untoasted... -
ARCHIVED Tummy Ache After Quinoa - Other Non-Grain Subs?
archaeo in FL posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
After a little searching online, I'm finding that I'm not alone in loving quinoa but not how it makes me feel. I know it is a safe grain, and my reactions aren't like my Celiac reactions (Celiac involves alternating d and c, severe fatigue, brain fog; after quinoa, it's stomach and upper GI pain, pretty acid feeling, and I almost never get an acid stomach... -
ARCHIVED Quinoa Oh No-a Should Have Said Whoa To That Quinoa
archaeo in FL replied to chasbari's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm late to this discussion, but have been noticing that I'm having bad stomach reactions to quinoa. Bad acid, reflux, stomach aches. To clarify, I do not think this is Celiac related, but it's frustrating that such a healthy grain substitute is now off the table too! It has been my go-to for packing lunches with fresh veggies and healthy fats (avocados,... -
ARCHIVED Best Way To Train For Half Marathon?
archaeo in FL replied to archaeo in FL's topic in Sports and Fitness
At a coworker's suggestion, I tried run-walking in earnest this weekend (normally I only walk when I feel I need to). He walks a bit after every mile, and uses this method to complete triathlons, including Iron Mans, which surprised me. I felt like I was just going too slow, and I didn't feel like it was helping me recover. I tried to walk pretty short... -
ARCHIVED Gu, Beans - What's Your During-Exercise Go-To?
archaeo in FL posted a topic in Sports and Fitness
Training for the half is going pretty well. I manage two runs during the week (2-3 miles in length without the warmup/cooldown, shorter is usually a quick interval workout), and one long run on the weekends. I've done two 5-mile runs and am looking forward to some cooler weather for my first try at a 6-mile this weekend! So... after how long of a workout... -
ARCHIVED Endoscope Done Today
archaeo in FL replied to hokyma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
To echo others here, my doc told me it all looked normal as I came to afterwards, and told me to continue to eat a normal diet. Two weeks later, a nurse called and told me that I have Celiac disease and sent a poor-quality photocopy of a short pamphlet about how to eat gluten-free. When I asked if I should schedule a follow-up exam, I was told that the doctor... -
ARCHIVED Best Way To Train For Half Marathon?
archaeo in FL replied to archaeo in FL's topic in Sports and Fitness
Made it 5 miles yesterday - beautiful day, very low hills, and my time actually improved (I guess my pace improved, really)! I'm averaging about a 10 minute mile, which is pretty speedy from where I was, but I'm getting up to much better than that on some sections and during intervals. Did 3 miles today, though, and was slow! I guess I should have taken... -
ARCHIVED Best Way To Train For Half Marathon?
archaeo in FL replied to archaeo in FL's topic in Sports and Fitness
Oh, I didn't know you had the option to bypass obstacles - that's a totally different story! Congrats on the weight loss and increased training - that's awesome. My parents are close to your age and I wish they were half as motivated as you! (My dad tested negative for Celiac, my mom is waiting until her annual blood test in March to do her test.) It... -
Kim, I feel your pain. My GYN explained to me that all women have looser stools if not D before and during their period because of the hormone fluctuation - for me, this also includes gas and bloating, no matter what I eat. Unfortunately, with a Mirena (for likely endo), my cycles are not regular and can last longer than usual, and I think that's partially...

ARCHIVED Best Way To Train For Half Marathon?
archaeo in FL replied to archaeo in FL's topic in Sports and Fitness
Thanks, everyone! I'm a couple of weeks in so far, averaging two weekday runs of about 3 miles (or 2.5 when I do interval training, alternating a faster-than-usual pace with a walking recovery) with a little extra for warmup (walking) and cooldown (walking and jogging), and I've done a couple of 4-milers on the weekends. That's a long distance for me, but... -
After about 6 months gluten-free (post-Celiac diagnosis), my antibody levels are nearly normal (very fast - <4 is normal, I was at 7 a few weeks ago, down from around 150 in June - hooray!), and I'm going to be able to stop supplementing Iron and reducing B12. Still taking lots of other (doctor-specified) supplements. I'm finally able to exercise for...

ARCHIVED Vodkas
archaeo in FL replied to AmyVC's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As Peter said, all distilled liquor is supposed to be gluten-free - but I've had people quickly jump on me to tell me about their reactions, so I guess super-sensitive Celiacs need to be careful. I really like Tito's - it's made in Texas, and is now being marketed as gluten-free (which makes me mad, given that all liquor is supposed to be - but maybe even... -
ARCHIVED Would Volunteering At An Animal Shelter Be Possible?
archaeo in FL replied to abby03's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
abby03, I can't think of a reason why you should not volunteer. Yes, you should wash your hands (or anything else little doggie and kitty mouths touch), especially before you eat. And I wouldn't let animals lick me on the face (especially near my mouth) no matter how cute or loving - in case you haven't noticed, their mouths touch quite a few other things... -
ARCHIVED Discussion About Liquor
archaeo in FL posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
A discussion of liquor has popped up on our local gluten-free Facebook page - someone asserted that bourbon is not gluten-free, and I responded that, as far as I knew, all liquors (as long as they have nothing added to them), because they are distilled, are gluten-free, no matter what they are made from. In fact, there is a great and detailed article here... -
ARCHIVED Distended Belly While gluten-free
archaeo in FL replied to ShannonA's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It sounds like you may have fructose malabsorption - talk to your GI or primary about a test for that (it should be simple, and non-invasive). If that's the problem (or part of it), there are a lot of things you can do - eat different fruits (different ones have different levels of fructose), prepare for it (if I know I'm going to eat an apple, I also know...
