ARCHIVED I"ve About Had Enough Of This !
archaeo in FL replied to ncdave's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sure thing! I actually never knew people could have a problem with iodine - and I don't know how they figure that out, except through what must be an excrutiatingly difficult exclusion diet! But it is added to salt for a reason. I had the opportunity to learn a little about cretinism in school, and that's where I learned that iodine is essential (fun history... -

I'm with mushroom, you should go ahead and get tested, just let your doctor know everything you're taking. I find it easiest to just bring the bottles in with me - even the big ones - so I don't forget anything (because when I don't, I do forget something, and then my doc gets upset that I'm not taking it - and then I get home and think "doh!"). I'm presently... -
ARCHIVED Well, The Food Court Is Torture....
archaeo in FL replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It would be, but it's not entirely clear that it's not just trying to make up for what Cathy said (and says): Open Original Shared Link It does appear that folks are treated relatively well as employees whatever their stance on the issue, or their own religious beliefs or sexuality, which is good, and is better than can be said for a lot of places... -

I agree. Homosexuality is not an illness to be cured, is not a sin to be repented. I try to vote with my dollars every day. -
ARCHIVED Health/beauty Products
archaeo in FL replied to FruitEnthusiast's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know that there are a lot of posts on here to the contrary, and that doctors are sometimes wrong, but every scientific source I've read indicates that gluten must be ingested for it to cause a problem. So items applied to the lips may cause a reaction, but nearly any other healthy and beauty item should be safe. If anyone has a medical source stating... -
ARCHIVED I"ve About Had Enough Of This !
archaeo in FL replied to ncdave's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
ncdave, do please visit a doctor to review any vitamin deficiencies, but please also note that iodine is added to salt for a reason - it is essential for the human body to process thyroid hormones. Not getting enough iodine can cause a long list of really problematic health issues including cretinism and goiter (and many less extreme problems). I'm not sure... -
ARCHIVED Do You Get A Flu Shot?
archaeo in FL replied to luvs2eat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
luvs2eat, ultimately the decision will be up to you. I encourage you to research the science behind vaccines - no amount of any vitamin or herb or supplement is going to vaccinate you or keep you from getting ill if you contract a virus that your immune system can't fight on its own. I never got flu shots before, but I recently started a job that requires... -
ARCHIVED How To Get People To Understand...
archaeo in FL replied to LexiBrowni's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lexi, I agree with Kareng that it will be helpful for us in replying if we know if you have Celiac, are gluten-intolerant, and whether you are self-diagnosed or have had blood tests and/or endoscopy? If you are self-diagnosed, your parents may be in denial or may not want to deal with it, or simply may not be taking it seriously. It's hard for me to imagine... -
ARCHIVED When Was Your Celiac Triggered?
archaeo in FL replied to Victoria6102's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It looks like I'm the exception, but other than recurrent ear infections as a kid, and later recurrent sinus infections (stopped after allergy shots) and recurrent UTIs (stopped when I started drinking more water and less other stuff) I've almost always felt pretty good. (I know that's not exactly normal, but there are a lot of things about our modern life... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms With Period.
archaeo in FL replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I got the Mirena IUD recently, hoping it'll help with some bladder issues (may have endometriosis on the bladder, but not confirmed), and also hoping it'll make my periods go away. I've only had it for a couple of months, and so far my gastro symptoms and cramps have been worse, but I haven't had much of a period - and not for long or at the same time at... -

Wanted to add to the list: East End Eatery Ate there this weekend, had their gluten-free blueberry waffle (ask for it specifically - they don't have it on the menu) and one of the owners came out to talk to me, asked first if I was comfortable talking about why I was avoiding gluten (I'm happy to!) and then talked with me about the fact that they often... -

ARCHIVED 1 Year Post-Diagnosis/ Lab Results :-(
archaeo in FL replied to veruca's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
hello veruca, i'm just starting my journey down this path but i just finished reading a book that was helpful (celiac disease: a hidden epidemic) and have a stack of others to get through... but it was interesting to learn that, depending on how long you've had active celiac, and just generally on your body's composition, you may take longer to heal.... -
ARCHIVED Endometriosis And Bladder Issues
archaeo in FL replied to Nicole Ren's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
IrishHeart and others, how long after you went gluten-free did the urinary urgency or frequency go away? I have had a feeling of needing to pee nearly all the time, sometimes worse after I void (and I am voiding nearly completely, that's been checked) and definitely worse after a BM. I have only been gluten-free for two weeks... but am hoping to see some... -
I was diagnosed with Celiac about two weeks ago and have been gluten-free since then (as far as I know, anyway!). I used to get a lot of bladder infections in high school and college, but after "cleaning up" my diet (more veg, more water - less soda and alcohol) and consistently urinating after intercourse I didn't have as many problems. Then out of nowhere...

ARCHIVED Places To Eat/get Food In Gainesville, Fl
archaeo in FL replied to laurelfla's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Also, to add a few options to gluten-free dining in Gainesville: Sarkara Sweets Downtown, near Maude's. They have gluten-free cupcakes (made and kept separate from all the others). A little dry and crumbly, but eaten with a fork and a cup of coffee, delicious. The Jones Have to admit I haven't been here since learning I have Celiac, but I've only... -
ARCHIVED Places To Eat/get Food In Gainesville, Fl
archaeo in FL replied to laurelfla's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Quick update on the millet and flax pizza at Satchel's - had it yesterday for the first time. The pizza itself was delicious - and not as thin as I anticipated. It wasn't bready-gooey, of course, without the gluten (and my dining companions got the deep dish! I was a little jealous of that), but the taste was nice. I did try their non-dairy non-soy "cheese... -
ARCHIVED Just Started Gluten Free
archaeo in FL replied to Ellen1977's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ellen1977, I'm about two weeks in, too, diagnosed about two weeks ago. I had bad pain in my right side last week - thought it might go away if I went for a run, but it just made the run that much harder, and sort of turned into a "side stitch" that wound up spreading across my whole upper abdomen. It passed, and it wasn't recognizable as gas but I think maybe... -
ARCHIVED Day 41, Symptoms Worsening
archaeo in FL replied to Raywuwei's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hello Raywuwei, I am new here, just diagnosed a couple of weeks ago, but can't see my doctor until August - so I'm just doing the best I can until then. Very little guidance on the "diet" from them so far. Before I recognized increasing and severe fatigue (from which my GP found anemia, B, D, C, and calcium deficiencies, and was smart enough to do... -
ARCHIVED Publix
archaeo in FL replied to FMcGee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
FMcGee, I'm relatively new to Gainesville, and newly diagnosed. I try to stay away from Archer Road unless absolutely necessary, but every once in a while maybe I'll make it over to that Publix to see if their gluten-free section is still as good as it was when you posted this (besides, my partner would like to get some of that local beer near there!). Thanks... -
ARCHIVED Places To Eat/get Food In Gainesville, Fl
archaeo in FL replied to laurelfla's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I love Satchel's - can't wait for it to reopen! (I'll miss the deep-dish at Leonardo's at Millhopper, though - recently diagnosed.) I also LOVE Karma Cream. Haven't been since I got my diagnosis, and I still am feeling very timid about asking lots of questions on ingredients, but at least I know that at this place they'll actually be able to tell me what... -
ARCHIVED Any Celiacs From Gainesville, Florida?

ARCHIVED Post Endoscopy, Awaiting Results And Confused
archaeo in FL replied to archaeo in FL's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks again, everyone. I heard back from my GI's nurse last week, the biopsies came back positive for celiac. After a couple of attempts, I have been gluten-free for about a week, and I've seen some positive changes, but some surprising not-so-good ones too, which I assume will resolve themselves. I am still awaiting the results of the extensive blood tests... -
ARCHIVED Post Endoscopy, Awaiting Results And Confused
archaeo in FL replied to archaeo in FL's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks, everyone! I really appreciate the responses! I'm hoping the tests come back soon, and are definitive. I've already had friends saying things like "ok, but if you eat a cookie it's not going to kill you, right?" I think in some way they're just trying to understand but it'll be so much easier to explain to people if I have a full-blown "problem... -
ARCHIVED Post Endoscopy, Awaiting Results And Confused
archaeo in FL posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello all, I am new and am awaiting biopsy results from my upper endoscopy, done yesterday. My GI sent me back for more bloodwork (I had only had TTG IgA before, scored over 100 with anything over 8 said to be positive on reference sheet; this morning I had a huge list of things she wanted checked, and left quite a few vials of blood at the lab!). The...
