  1. The texture of gluten-free baked goods take a bit of getting used to. I like it now but when I take gluten-free baking to people's houses, my goodies don't disappear nearly as fast as my old "glutinous" baking did. I doesn't help that I've cut the sugar a bunch too. LOL The main thing I miss is convenience for my children. I can happily order a salad...
  2. I am sorry that you feel so poorly, but welcome to the board. If you think it could be a celiac, you should request celiac disease blood tests and possibly an endoscopic biopsy. The bloo tests are: TTG IgA and TTG IgG total serum IgA EMA IgA DGP IgA and DGP IgG AGA IgA and AGA IgG (these are older and less reliable tests) You must be eating...
  3. LOL Woohoo isn't the usual response to a positive DGP test! LOL I know what you mean though. it is nice to have answers after all that time... and if you have to have an illness, celiac isn't the worst - at least we, the patients, have full control over how we treat the disease.
  4. Ditto the others. He's wrong. I am almost positive I was aceliac my whole life even though as a child I was extremely tall. we're talking 98th percentile. By age 12 I was 5'8" and 135 lbs and a healthy looking size 7... who happened to get a stomach ache at almost every meal.
  5. I don't know if there is a good time...I would suggest the evening because then the immediate symptoms can be experienced at home or while sleeping. I'm afraid if you are consuming gluten every day, there will be no getting around the lingering symptoms... eventually you'll be having symptoms on most days. Hang in there.
  6. Welcome to the board. Mono (EBV) is strongly suspected to kickstart autoimmune disorders, or to take them up a notch. I don't know why but there's something about those herpes related viruses (like chicken pox, mono, etc) that seem to do a number on people with autoimmune problems. I know that after having mono, my AI problems really started to express...
  7. A lot of the medical community is not up to date on celiac testing. You are correct in that the DGP IgA test is very specific to celiac and very sensitive - meaning you have celiac. Other tests, like the (anti-gliadin) AGA IgA, are often mixed up with the newer (deaminated gliadian) DGP IgA tests, and were not nearly as reliable. DGP testing, and EMA testing...

Hashi's is much more common with women than it is in men, but celiac disease seems to have a more even distribution amoungst the sexes... and celiac disease seems to have the ability to kick start other autoimmune disorders (like Hashi's). It seems to me that I have heard of more men having both, or just celiac, than just hashimoto's.... but that is just...
  9. Ditto what KarenG said, a gene test just menas you could get celiac disease, and not that you have it. The blood tests can tell you if you have celiac disease or not. Those are: TTG IgA and TTG IgG total serum IgA EMA IgA DGP IgA and DGP IgG AGA IgG and AGA IgA (older tests) I have read (can not remember where) that sufferers of dh will often...
  10. Welcome to the board. Your symptoms sound a LOT like celiac or non celiac gluten intolerance (NCGI). I think you are on the right track. I hope you are feeling better soon.
  11. NCGI or celiac sometimes presents silently or neurologically. For instance, I was shocked that my migraines were largely caused by gluten... I'd had no idea!
  12. Yes, your kids should be tested. Toddlers can have a false negative result though so if a child has symptoms, you might want to consider the gluten-free diet for them. Also, if your kids do test negative, they should be retested every few years if they are still eating gluten. Celiac disease can express itself at any time so if they are negative now, they...
  13. Thyroid problems are really common in celiacs (as compared to the regular population). I have hypothyroidism, and am up to 125mcg of synthroid, but my TPO antibodies were still within the normal range. Autoimmune attacks come and go - they don't stay steady. In my own situation, I think my TPO Ab was low because my immune system wasn't as active... or my...
  14. TTG tests usually indicate celiac disease but they can indicate other problems too. I'm not sure if the ttg IgA tests are the same as the ttg IgG tests, but I do know that a positive ttg IgA can also indicate Hashimoto's thyroiditis, autoimmune liver disease, and I think Crohn's as well as some other problems like infections. That being said though, when...
  15. Welcome to the board. My kids are super picky (embarassingly so) so it took a while to find some good substitutes. I have a chicken nugget recipe that the kids love: coat cut-up chicken in milk (I use coconut) and coat with: 1.5 c tapioca starch/flour 0.5 c brown rice flour or a gluten-free baking mix 0.5 tsp baking powder 3 tsp seasoning salt...
  16. The DGP IgG is a pretty specific test for celiac disease, which means if you have a positive test then celiac disease is most likely the cause of it. There are more blood tests you could request if you want to be (more) sure of your diagnosis. Here is some iOpen Original Shared Link. Those low nutrients are often linked to celiac. they would also point...

Welcome to the board, Wahls. You'll find there are quite a few of of us around here with hypothyroidism and celiac, so there will be many around here to commiserate with. Are you fine with accepting that you need to stay off gluten for life? I just ask because you haven't been of gluten for very long, and it sounds like you've had a few "glutenings" ...
  18. Hang in there. I'm 9 months in and have recently made a doozy of a mistake. It happens.... I think as long as we learn from our mistakes we'll be okay.
  19. Welcome to the club... I think someone around here was handing out "secret decoder rings". I'm sorry you hit withdrawl. Hopefully you are most of the way through it and will become human agin soon. It's a nasty time. L-Glutamine is a good supplement to encourage healing of muscles (ie, small intestine). I used it in the past when I was weight...
  20. (Hugs) Oh no. I don't know much about diabetes but I do know that eliminating as many starches as possible is usually helpful. That would be all flours (except maybe coconut or almond), stachy vegetables (most root/tubers) and beans, peas and corn consumption should be greatly reduced. Cutting back on very sugary fruits is often helpful too; ie. pick...
  21. (hugs) to you, you busy mom. With a B12 that low, are you supplementing with B12? A sublingual B12 would be best: methylcolbuman (spelling?) is a really good one. Take a couple a day. Eating quality meats helps too (as far as I know). PA is not uncommon amoung celiacs (as I'm sure you already know ). I hope you find answers soon.
  22. I've had that before, but had been because of slow bowels, things had time to sit and get compacted together and (ahem) a few days worth would come out at once. It wasn't that unusual for me. As I understand it (not at all sure I'm right) the lighter the bm, usually the less time it has spent inside of you. I think stools are often darker the longer they...
  23. Welcome to the board. I've heard that enerolab tends to have a very high positive rate on its tests... many people take those rsults with a grain of salt since I don't think they are medically recognized as accurate. The only way you'll know for sure is if your try eliminating them I guess. How many things did they test you against? I wonder because...
  24. If you think a biopsy is needed, I too would push for the endoscopy as soon as possible. Retesting the blood tests seems pretty useless - my doctor likes to do retest too and he ALWAYS accepts the normal test and discards the abnormal test... which has been to my health's detriment because it delayed treatment in a separate disorder for years. Speaking...
  25. Prickleypear and Bartfull said everything I was going to add. I would wait on your test and see what it says, then look into other food intolerances and thyroid testing. When you do get your lab results, request hard copies so you can do some of your own research on those results. I did not do that back in my early 20's when I started getting fatigue...
