ARCHIVED Gluten Test/challenge--Do I Make My Kid Start Over?
nvsmom replied to MomProf's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I completely agree with Kareng. Your kids and you should get tested for celiac disease. Celiac is an autoimmune disorder just like hashi's. If you look around the board at people's signatures, you'll see that Hashi's is quite prevalent - I've even heard as high as 1 in 10 celiacs have it. I have Hashi's, another autoimmune disease, and my arthritic... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Test/challenge--Do I Make My Kid Start Over?
nvsmom replied to MomProf's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree that it is a good idea to go back on gluten for a while and then test for celiac disease. Normally, a gluten challenge is the name of a period of time prior to celiac disease testing when the patient eats the equivalent of about 1-2 slices of bread for 8-12 weeks. Your son has only been gluten-free for 18 days so he may not need to resume eating... -
Hemorrhoids are not unusual among celiacs and it can cause quite a bit of bleeding. Could that be it? They often accompany diarrhea or constipation and the bleeding can ast days or weeks.

Welcome to the board, Biel45. I hope you feel better.

ARCHIVED Should I Get Tested Or Not?
nvsmom replied to monkeysam's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board. Your symptoms could very well be celiac disease, or non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). To determine if it is celiac disease, you would need more blood tests (with a gluten challenge of 1-2 slices of bread per day for 8-12 weeks prior to testing) or an endoscopy biopsy with a month long gluten challenge. There are genetic tests... -

ARCHIVED Confused With Diagnosis

Oh yes! We have a few board members with no obvious symptoms of celiac disease at all. -
ARCHIVED Pizza Hut Offering Certified gluten-free Pizza!
nvsmom replied to kareng's topic in Publications & Publicity
Chuck E Cheese has a cheese gluten-free pizza that I would trust, but I don't think I'd want to actually eat it. LOL It is another one of those deals where it comes in the box, frozen, and they cook it in the box it came in. It is nice that the kids can eat pizza with their friends but it is expensive for a frozen pizza. I'm not sure I'd want to try it... -
ARCHIVED Question About Blood Test
nvsmom replied to beadgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Often if you increase your gluten intake, doctors will accept a shorter challenge, but not everybody could handle that much gluten for so long. -
ARCHIVED Pizza Hut Offering Certified gluten-free Pizza!
nvsmom replied to kareng's topic in Publications & Publicity
Huh. Great if it pans out but I would be nervous about it. How many pizza place employee follow the food prep guidelines now, nevermind the pickiness that a safe pizza would require. Would be nice though... -
ARCHIVED Unusual Question
nvsmom replied to Brit1612's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Could your bleeding be related to hypothyroidism (which is more common among celiacs)? I did not realize my periods were so heavy until my thyroid was treated a few years ago. My periods used to be 7-10 days and the first 5 were heavy enough that if you did not get up in the night to take care of things, I had a mess on my hands. Since having my thyroid... -
ARCHIVED Feel Like There Is No Answer
nvsmom replied to Brit1612's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's about it. The EMA igG is a good idea since he already has a positive tTG IgG. Retesting the tTG IGG is an idea, but he must trust the result was correct so he didn't bother reordering that one. The only tests not run are the AGA IgA and AGA IgG but to be honest, I would skip those. The DGP tests were created to replace the AGA tests because... -
ARCHIVED Untreated Gluten Sensitivity Long Term Effects?
nvsmom replied to alcie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From what I understand, the current thinking is that food sensitivities, when not treated, create inflammation which over time can lead to other health complications such as heart disease, cancers, or simply pain like arthritis. It sounds like it could be a cause of future health problems, but it is sort of like smoking - not everyone gets lung cancer. ... -
Probably. Possibly... I saw this post where they were discussing how if once you are in the military you find out that you have celiac disease, they will accommodate you but if you know you have it coming in they say no thanks. https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/69335-celiac-in-the-military/ If it is important to you, you could look into it further...

ARCHIVED Test Results, High Igg
nvsmom replied to alcie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
No. Not at all. A positive test for celiac disease almost always indicates celiac disease. The specificity of these tests for celiac disease (the percentage of positive tests caused by celiac disease) are quite high; usually around 95%. On the other hand, the sensitivity of the tests (how often these tests will be positive even if all the patients have... -
I just received this response (I edited out the name again): Good Afternoon, any diagnosis of celiac disease generally results in a category of unfit. As often times we cannot accommodate specific dietary needs when deployed overseas or on taskings. I am not, however, in the position to tell potential applicants that they will or will not be medically...

ARCHIVED Literally Unable To Gluten Challenge
nvsmom replied to MycasMommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree that it is a really good idea to test your kids before going gluten-free, and retesting every few years if they are eating gluten. Hope you continue to fee better. -
ARCHIVED "mild" Celiac?
nvsmom replied to kaytuh's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't like to call it "mild celiac" myself. Celiac is celiac, some of us just have mild symptoms... for now. My symptoms were not extreme when I was younger either. I had stomachaches and some joint pain in my teens but things slowly became more serious in my 20's and beyond. I developed more AI diseases, some fatigue, and the beginnings of migraines... -
Good luck with it! If you think of it, perhaps ask if the reserves are treated a bit differently.... or if there is any difference in policy for NCO versus commissioned - I'm curious too. I hope you get good news.

ARCHIVED Feel Like There Is No Answer
nvsmom replied to Brit1612's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would ask for it (EMA IgG) anyways. There are some kids who are positive in it, and I've seen a couple of kids who had positive EMA IgA but a negative tTG IgA although it is unusual. It is probably best to cover all of your bases just in case. The blood tests I was positive in were the tTG IgA and EMA IgA. After being gluten-free for about 8 months... -
I wrote to a recruiter after you brought this up (my kids also have some interest in the forces). I wrote: If one has celiac disease, are they restricted from joining the force? Can a gluten (wheat, barley, rye, etc) intolerance be accommodated? Thank you. I have so far received this reply: Good day, Thank you for your interest...
-
You'd have to get in touch with a recruiter about that. Open Original Shared Link From what I have heard, if you are in the Canadian military and discover you have celiac disease, they accommodate you, but getting in with a diagnosis of celiac disease may be another matter. I sent an inquiry to a local recruiter; I have a son who has expressed interest...

I'm in Alberta. Part of the reason I skipped the endoscopy was because the wait to see the GI specialist was a minimum of 9 months to a year. Stupidly long wait, right? I wasn't about to try gluten (for a one month period) again just to confirm the blood work. Gotta love our health care system. If the wait 9 is months to see the GI, and you...

ARCHIVED Feel Like There Is No Answer
nvsmom replied to Brit1612's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you get the EMA test run you'll need to request the EMA IgG rather than the EMA IgA due to the IgA deficiency. It's not used as commonly as the IgA version so it may not be available. The endomysial antibodies test (EMA) tends to become positive as the disease progresses; it indicates more advanced disease, as a general rule. -
ARCHIVED Help With My Test Results Please.
nvsmom replied to nettinpete's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
EMA IgA is the anti endomysial antiboies immunoglobulin A test. It is very similar to the tTG IgA test but it tends to appear later as the disease progresses. It is often negative in early celiac disease or in very young children. The EMA IgA is very specific to celiac disease though, so if you get a positive test, it is as close to a sure thing as a diagnosis...
