ARCHIVED Basic Question Needing Basic Answer
swittenauer replied to lorka150's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I guess everyone is different. My husband lost about 25 or so pounds before he was diagnosed. It took him about 2 months before it was back for the most part. Being totally gluten free is the key. -
ARCHIVED Foods
swittenauer replied to KIM22's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My husband eats the Kraft pudding cups & has no problem with them. We don't eat anything unless we verify with the company that it is gluten free. It's better to just not take a chance. -
Here is another symptom that I didn't realize was associated with celiac. It seems as though my husband is one of those "lucky" people who gets all the symptoms. He is itchy a lot. We try different lotions & such but to no avail. Hopefully when we hit the 6 month mark gluten free that some of these symptoms will subside.

My husband has gone long enough without bread because we could never find a brand he really liked. I thought I would purchase a bread maker but I have no idea which type to get or what options to look for. Anyone have any advice or know of some good brands to look for?

That link to the celiac association was really informative. Thanks for posting that. -
ARCHIVED Eye Swelling And Crusting--help!
swittenauer replied to Threebrainedbeing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow, we just thought it was allergies that made my husbands eyes get puffy & crusty. I never remember reading anywhere about it being a symptom associated with celiac. Does anyone have a link they can send me to any more info on this? -
ARCHIVED Aching Bones
swittenauer replied to swittenauer's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, my husband says he is still achy. Not everyday but often enough. Too complicate things he has broken his leg. So he really hurts now. Doesn't this disease just have the worst symptoms ever? -
Well, the rapid heartbeat continues almost on a nightly basis. He says it feels like it is flip flopping around or beating really fast. I guess you just learn to live with it & know that it is just associated with celiac & hopefully with time it might lessen.

I guess I will try to not take it personally & retreat to another room. My only problem is how to tell if he is actually upset or its the gluten talking. I'm just glad that these instances are few & far between. It could be worse but we try very hard to watch what he eats.
-
I understand what you are all saying but my husband will get angry & tell me that basically everything I have done that day has gotten him mad. By the time, I think it may be the gluten then I have already been insulted so much that all I want to do is explain to him or make him understand what he is doing but at that point he is usually too far gone...

ARCHIVED Lays Barbq Stax-really Gf?
swittenauer replied to sonjaf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My husband loves those & hasn't gotten sick eating them. It is our go to snack. -
So does anyone have a hard time knowing that you are getting angry because you have been gluttened. For the most part, my husband seems to be able to control it but last night, after having slipped up & testing our daughters gluten filled soup, he totally lost it. He got very frustrated & down right angry. He seemed to realize why midstream but...

ARCHIVED Alcohol
swittenauer replied to Mahee34's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I buy my husband the B & J wine based coolers. Here in KY, you can only get malt based in the grocery stores since you can't buy wine in grocery stores. We have to go to an actual liquor store. They have 5 or 6 flavors I think. He really likes them. -
My husband has a horrible time falling asleep & then when he finally gets to sleep he is up again. He has major insomnia. I read somewhere, I thought here, that it was a symptom of celiac.
-
Thanks for the info kvogt! I'm just surprised I haven't run across any more people on here from KY.

ARCHIVED Is It Really Gf?
swittenauer replied to mart's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My husband eats Lay Stax like they are going out of style & the only problem he gets is swelling & that is because nobody needs to sit down & eat a whole tube of chips in one sitting. Ha! -
ARCHIVED Microwave Popcorn
swittenauer replied to swittenauer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I never ate a lot of popcorn before my husband was diagnosed & it became one of his favorite snacks. Now I find myself taking a bag of it for lunch. I'm hooked. -
I totally agree. Everytime he has a new symptom appear it is strangely comforting to know that he is not alone.
-
Well, he met with the nutritionist but I think since we have done so much research ourselves, we didn't really learn much new information. However, the anger is totally not an issue now. He has been doing very well with his eating gluten free & only an occasional slip up but I guess it is all a learning process.

ARCHIVED Help With Dinner
swittenauer replied to swittenauer's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Those were all great ideas for dinner. However, not only does my husband have Celiac & is allergic to shellfish & chocolate but he is a picky eater also. Ha! Not a good combination. He doesn't like carrots, peas, mushrooms, etc. We are working around it all though & doing pretty good. -
ARCHIVED Microwave Popcorn
swittenauer replied to swittenauer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, still no response from Cousing Willie's. I guess it is safe to assume that the answer would be that it is full of gluten. Who knows? Anyway, we are sticking with Act II. The Movie Style Butter popcorn is awesome & totally addictive. -
He has not had his thyroid tested but I have heard that it could be a cause before when doing research but then I also heard it had something to do with celiac. Hopefully, it will subside but if not then we will have him tested.
