ARCHIVED Tested Today!
SMDBill replied to SMDBill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Follow up information. I got my blood test results and bone density results. Every single test was normal. Every vitamin and nutrient level, thyroid, liver enzymes, proteins...everything they tested my blood for was normal except triglycerides were high normal (which is WAY better than it used to be!). The bone density test was normal. So...all I have left... -
ARCHIVED Still Have Chronic Fatigue - Please Help
SMDBill replied to Gfresh404's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't know the answer to the fatigue part, but I feel your pain. I'm only 2 months in and this past weekend was difficult to get through for fatigue. I had so much I wanted to accomplish, but I prioritized them just to get the most important first before I ran out of steam. It's frustrating, but you can't give up. Have you tried to boost levels of water... -
ARCHIVED Waking Up With Dry, Sticky Lips
SMDBill replied to adambryant's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Dehydration and frequent urination sounds like a caffeine issue if it's not something more serious. Before I gave up coffee and tea (that was all I drank daily for most of my life) I had both of those issues. I now drink one cup of coffee each morning and water, milk or OJ (mostly water) otherwise. I no longer urinate as often (probably about 3x longer between... -
ARCHIVED Wow! This Article Scares Me About Gfd... Anyone Else!
SMDBill replied to a84c72's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think what the author failed to capture is that the GFD is not the only prescription for celiac disease. Yes, it is the one prescription every single celiac must follow, but it fails to take into account the vitamin and mineral supplements and shots/intravenous treatments. I have yet to hear from anyone who was not told by their gastroenterologist that... -
ARCHIVED After A Dairy Exposure, How Long Does It Take To Recover?
SMDBill replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm severely lactose intolerant and for me it's 22 hours. That's the amount of time from ingestion of dairy to its not so fun exit. Once it's gone my system is quickly back to normal and I hope yours is as well. For me it's not at all like being glutened. That's a long recovery process, which for me was 2-3 weeks. -
ARCHIVED Symptoms, Symptoms, Symptoms! Help!
SMDBill replied to sagrill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You do sound like you got glutened. I have had daily headaches like you, as well as the migraines. I had DH on my feet but the gastro didn't get to see them because I went gluten-free before going to him. I had eczema a bit on my head and my elbows were in horrible shape...sharp, rough skin. I was opposite in that I had D all the time, not C. But the rest... -
ARCHIVED I Love Bread.
SMDBill replied to rubes's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That agony you felt after the beer sounds a lot like what some of us feel after ingestion of gluten. It's horrible and it's effects do not go away quickly. If celiac is what you have, the healing process is not immediate. You may feel better very soon, but the internal work takes a lot of time. I think your feelings are normal. I'm only a couple months... -
ARCHIVED Advice Starting Gluten Free Diet.
SMDBill replied to adambryant's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It doesn't sound like overraction at all. I'm lactose intolerant (very!) and a glass of milk can cause nightmares, cramping, heavy D, etc. The gas is quite normal if you are indeed lactose intolerant. If you're not lactose intolerant I wouldn't think it would cause the changes if you happen to be celiac. One way to know for sure is to get some strong lactase... -
ARCHIVED Issues With Caffiene Since Going Gluten Free?
SMDBill replied to AandGsmomma's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I only drank caffeinated drinks before going gluten-free. Coffee all morning and then sweet tea all day, followed by coffee in the evening after dinner, then tea until bedtime. When I went gluten-free I also eliminated coffee and tea. I was strictly drinking water, Lactaid milk and OJ. After 2 weeks or so I reintroduced caffeine, but I only allow myself one... -
To be honest, I'm a couple months into being gluten-free as a result of celiac and it is rather consuming. I think about it more than is probably healthy, but it is getting better. I don't talk about it all the time like I did at first, mostly when I found new information that was important, but I still think about it a great deal. Hopefully as you adapt...

ARCHIVED I Could Punch Myself Right Now!
SMDBill replied to AshBil's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was at Olive Garden the other night with my daughter to celebrate the end of their soccer season. I wasn't sure if they even had a gluten free menu, but I'm not a fan of their regular food so I chose to just have a soda. I didn't even touch a breadstick or crumbs, but at the end the waitress brought me my bill for the sodas and handed us mints. I avoided... -
ARCHIVED I Feel Like I Am Going To Die....:(
SMDBill replied to a84c72's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Harsh reality is you have a debilitating disease if left untreated and you are allowing it to win. The simple answer is it's just food. Period. Eat the right stuff and feel better or continue on that path to worse health, possibly cancerous later. And it does NOT have to be expensive. I eat fruit, nuts and some candy (M&M's for a small snack) every day... -
My Notes On Ordering Out Or Eat In Restaurants And Fast Food
SMDBill commented on amandasmommy2's blog entry in amandasmommy2's Blog
Joanie, I'm not sure it helps any, but there are a few restaurants that go through extensive certification processes to be able to serve gluten-free foods with high confidence in their safety. I'm not at all suggesting you should change your feelings or stop protecting your daughter in any way by exposing her, but I have found for myself that places... -
ARCHIVED Is Craving Food A Symptom Of Celiac Disease?
SMDBill replied to hubicka's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not sure it's so much of a symptom as it is a related issue due to the change in diet, as well as part of a condition of malabsorption. It's hard and sometimes I do crave sugary foods as well. If you went from a heavy gluten and sugary diet to a gluten-free diet without all the junk food, that may explain it. Or you could have an underlying issue with... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Here, 11 Months Since Going Gluten Free And Still Bitter?
SMDBill replied to Framefunnyfarm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow....just wow. I read through that entire post, word for word, and all I can feel is sympathy. To have gone through the agony that you did only to be in the boat you are in...yes, I would be bitter. Not bitter because YOU know, but bitter because THEY did not. And bitter because you had to soul search, research and plead with everyone to find what some... -
ARCHIVED Tested Today!
SMDBill replied to SMDBill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks GFinDC! I told him about the history of thyroid issues. My mom was diagnosed with Grave's Disease and she had a goiter that was very large. It eventually went back down without surgery, but her treatment for thyroid issues lasted 5 years. I do not know the extent of the others' issues in my family other than their diagnosis, but your suspicions may... -
ARCHIVED Could This Rash Be From A Glutening? (Photo)
SMDBill replied to LundqvistSaves's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'd say if the Benadryl didn't help they sure aren't hives. Plus they don't last that long normally. Hopefully someone will come along with a bit better insight into what it could be. -
ARCHIVED Possible Celiac Symptoms?
SMDBill replied to Taleswrapper's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You certainly could be, but I am not saying that based on your symptoms since I didn't experience those. However, if your son has it it's likely one of his parents passed it to him if he's your natural child and not adopted. My gastro mentioned several different times when people had bizarre symptoms, one of them being liver enzymes that were off as the only... -
That's like the argument that 'surely a little bit won't hurt you once in a while'. Ugggggg.

ARCHIVED Need Advice About Conflicting Test Results Please...
SMDBill replied to BellaBella's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I can't really answer many of your questions, but I will try to based only on my situation...hopefully it helps. I gave my gastro all my symptoms and 6 pages of how I felt prior and all the changes I felt once I was gluten-free. He was certain without testing me I had celiac and that caused all my issues. However, during the endoscopy he found I have erosive... -
ARCHIVED I Didn't Eat Gluten For 2 Days Before Test - Is That A Problem?
SMDBill replied to QP1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have to agree with GottaSki. There is a lot of work that must be done to thoroughly test for celiac and to run one blood test is questionable at best. I just had all my work done on Tuesday and I was gluten-free for 2 months. I do not have the results back yet, but there was visible damage that helped them know better where to biopsy. My doctor had me... -
ARCHIVED Could This Rash Be From A Glutening? (Photo)
SMDBill replied to LundqvistSaves's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I haven't had skin problems like that from gluten, but I have had similar skin reactions for other reasons. As a teenager I used to get embarrassing hives. They broke out on my side, my upper arms, neck and lips. My lip would swell as if I'd been hit in it. It usually pointed back to stress or excitement, but now that my doctor suspects I may have been celiac... -
ARCHIVED Symtoms Of Celiac Disease?
SMDBill replied to adambryant's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'd go so far as to suggest a different gastroenterologist. If you have immediate family with celiac and, knowing that fact, they chose not to do a complete celiac panel with endoscopy after hearing your symptoms, something is amiss with the doctor. It's difficult enough for some people to get a physician to consider celiac as their diagnosis, but in your... -
ARCHIVED How Did You Come To Realize You Had A Dairy Issue?
SMDBill replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I've had it my entire life, but I know when I consume milk or ice cream that there will be a lot of payback in the form of diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating and internal hemorrhoids. Sometimes even a bit of oily stool. It's rough, it hurts and it's never worth it. I switched to Lactaid milk and I take a dietary enzyme (lactase) - 2 pills of 9,000 units... -
ARCHIVED Has Been A While But Amazing Update........
SMDBill replied to roxieb73's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What a remarkable recovery and congratulations are in order!!! It's awesome to hear about others who face it and overcome the challenges, then get to enjoy a normal life again. I hope so many others here also get the same results from their life adjustments to celiac.
