ARCHIVED Gluten-free Breads, Bagels, Pizza, Spaghetti
Claire replied to FairySprinkle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh you lucky people! You can eat gluten-free bread . Whole Food does make good bread. Others too so I hear. I cannot eat yeast - so there goes all the breads - except - I just found Kinnickinick yeast free Tapioca and yeast free rice breads. It is not too good cold but heated slightly it improves. However it makes very good toast - toasting it frozen... -
Today I had an appt. with a GI specialist (new to this area - formerly with NIH). I was uneasy because my GP had written what I considered a prejudicial referral. I did as I always do when going to a new doctor - I wrote up a case history - not too long but thorough. I filled out the required office forms and then included my history. He sat down and...

Buyer Beware! Celiac is a genetic disorder. There is no cure for a genetic disorder. Someday there may be a valid and safe intervention but at this time the gluten free diet is the one and only way to go. Claire

Hi again - I think they probably would but I would still suggest some reading on the threads here to get a feel for your subject so you can put together an appropriate survey - one that isn't too log=ng and perhapss asks provocative questions - the thing that will make your project stand out. Don't forget - there is humor even in disease - and this one has... -
ARCHIVED Lactose Intolerant Question
Claire replied to ebrbetty's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Betty - Perhaps you are expecting too much too soon. It took years for your body to get so messed up. It will take time to heal. Symptoms will not disappear right away. Food intolerance - especially dairy - may be at fault. Most celiacs have some - even many - food intolerances. These can make you every bit as miserable as the gluten reactions. ... -
Most insurance companies cover the scans once every two years. The reason for that is because none of the drugs being given produce measurebale results in the short term. I know a lady who is taking the most aggressive bone building program there is - regular injections plus meds. She is only being scanned once a year. There was no additional bone loss...

Hi Gant - Suggestions for you - first that you sit down, take a deep breath and write an outline of what you want to accomplish - what SPECIFIC things you want to know. Then use the search feature on this site to followup on the specifics - e.g. symptoms - tests - foods - doctors - specialists - about gluten - etc. Celiac is a complicated subject ... -
This entire site is very good. I have just used this excerpt for a teaser. Claire AUTOIMMUNITY Autoimmune diseases are strongly associated with wheat gluten -- Celiac Disease is just one of many such autoimmune diseases. Roughly 10%-30% of general autoimmune patients are also classic Celiacs. As much as a third of autoimmune patients have...

Claire replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
These sound like good ideas for children. Any ideas to help an adult losing weight rapidly? I am Gluten-free Casein-free and cannot eat soy in solid form, cannot eat most fruits except in very small quanitiy - no fruit juice except in very small quantity. I can't seem to find any food - that I can eat - that has any calories. I eat well and healthy... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Sensitivity - Celiac - Ataxia Etc.
Claire replied to Claire's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am casein free because of the similarity between the wheat protein gluten and the milk protein casein. I have an ataxia - gluten effects ataxia regardless of the cause of the ataxia. The immune system attacks body cells that resemble (at the molecular level) the ingested reactive food. Thus the immune system attacks the brain cells - which are similiar... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Sensitivity - Celiac - Ataxia Etc.
Claire replied to Claire's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi again - Note this paragraph: "Peptide fragments and amino acids cross the epithelial cell membranes by active transport. Inside the cell they are broken into amino acids that then enter the capillary. Gluten enteropathy is the inability to absorb gluten, a protein found in wheat." I have not heard the gluten enteropathy stated this way! The body... -

How fortunate you are! I know how disappointed I am every time I luck out - again. An answer is a blessing. Maybe I need a trip to NE - lived there for many years before coming to PA. So glad for you. Claire -
ARCHIVED Regular Grocery Store Alternatives
Claire replied to T. Willick's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I toast it frozen. Works real well - no breakage. I have to use the yeast free variety but it makes amazing toast. First yeast free bread I have ever found that was worth the time to unwrap it. Claire -
ARCHIVED Gluten Sensitivity - Celiac - Ataxia Etc.
Claire replied to Claire's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am so pleased when a post is helpful to someone. Thanks for telling me. Yes I do have ataxia. I have both gait and balance problems. The gait problems particularly have been worsening over the past three years. I cannot maintain a straight pursuit - rather veer off to the left and have to keep righting myself. I don't exactly go where I intend to go... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Sensitivity - Celiac - Ataxia Etc.
Claire posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You might check these out. Claire Gluten sensitivity is an important cause of apparently idiopathic ataxia and may be progressive. The ataxia is a result of immunological damage to the cerebellum, to the posterior columns of the spinal cord, and to peripheral nerves. We propose the term gluten ataxia to describe this disorder. ARCHIVED Just Saw My Dr
Claire replied to JLK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
UltraClear makes several highly recommended products. As for the Leaky Gut - you definitely do not have to have celiac disease to have this condition. I have had the LGS for many years. I do not have Celiac. I may or may nnot have gluten sensitivity - not tests results on that. With LGS you become increasingly more intolerant of food until almost everything... -
ARCHIVED Lactulose/mannitol Test For Leaky Gut
Claire replied to Scott Bonner's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had the test several years ago. I will be having a new test in a couple of weeks. Glutamine is said to be the best 'gut' healer. It worked for me but I am no longer allowed to take it so I will probably have problems again. Claire -

I am repeating myself here but will offer this suggestion again in case it was missed. I have mulitple food intolerances. When I went totally gluten-free last summer they bloomed like summer roses! I was really having trouble eating much of anything. I have recently started isolating foods - eating often but one type of food at one time and allowing...
