ARCHIVED How Did You Acquire Celiac?
Rikki Tikki replied to tasha's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The symptoms started shortly after surgery. Went on for 10 years, went to the doctor who told me I had a positive test for celiac but it was so rare he didn't think I had it, I believed him and didn't even look it up. Then I got really sick for several years before I finally went back to the doctor. Positive blood and biopsy. It pretty much has sucked... -
Hey B I think most of us have been there. It took about 3 years for me to feel better and put on some weight. The doctors do just say gluten free and you will feel better but it's not that simple. It takes a lot of time and many of have continuing problems. It does hurt. Keep talking and we will see each other through the ups and downs.XOXO

Thanks Merika, you can't imagine the guilt that I have been carrying around about me giving it to her, I din't know I had it at the time, anyway it meant a lot to read what you wrote. I actually got tears in my eyes! thanks again. (

ARCHIVED Hip Pain?
Rikki Tikki replied to princessfuzzball's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hello Princess: If I were you I would have the x-ray on your hips and then have the docotr do a bone density test. It is so important that you listen to your body and push your doctor to keep testing until they figure out what is wrong. I think many of us have learned the hard way that the medical profession is far to willing to say it's all in your head... -
ARCHIVED How Come It Took So Long To Diagnose Me?
Rikki Tikki replied to CeliacMe's topic in Doctors
I ahve to agree with you Celia, there is nothing like the smell of fresh baked bread. I believe that more people are diagnosed now because of the processed food. Celiac itself I believe was first diagnosed in the 1800.'s, correct me if I am wrong. Anyway, it pretty much sucks but there are many worse things we could have. This time of year is the hardest... -
I agree, I think nursing is great. Maybe I nursed too long, she was 20 months old when she stopped. Her diet other than that didn't differ from the other 2. If I remember correctly, I didn't introduce any other food to her until she was 6 months old, that was the school of thought at the time. She was diagnosed with celiac at 15. I have it, but the other...

I just wanted some feedback on this and to see what other people's thoughts are. I had 3 children and nursed one. She is the only one that has ended up with celiac. I have read that nursing appears to protect babies from celiac. What is everyone's thoughts on this? At the time I didn't know I had celiac and of course there is no way to know if the...

ARCHIVED Follow-up Upper Endoscopy
Rikki Tikki replied to carriecraig's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Lori: Don't get frustrated. It took me about 3 years to really feel good again, and for about 2 1/2 years of that I didn't cheat. It was after the doctor put me on steriods for something else that I really noticed an improvement. I don't know if there is a connection or not. Don't give up or give in, I am here to tell you it will get better! -
I taped it, and am watching it now, sure enough thats what Allison said!

ARCHIVED Halfway To Diagnosis
Rikki Tikki replied to WGibs's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This is just my two cents worth. They couldn't pay me enough to eat gluten for a couple of weeks so they could run another blood test. It does take some time to heal, it took me about 2 years but I had celiac disease for at least 10. Good luck and welcome -
I just emailed Oprah and asked her to do a show about celiac disease. I remember Kaiti tried last year, maybe we will have better luck this time

Speaking of Outback, does anyone know what they put on the outside of their potato's? I have tried butter and garlic salt but I don't get the same result.
-
I had a great meal twice at the Outback. Also had the brownie and it was so good I have craved more since. Go out and enjoy, just make sure they know gluten-free. Have fun!

ARCHIVED How Come It Took So Long To Diagnose Me?
Rikki Tikki replied to CeliacMe's topic in Doctors
I think that the medical community doesn't know a lot about celiac. I hope this changes as more people receive a diagnosis. For me I had been to the doctor 10 years before and he had run some blood tests, said it showed a disease but that it was so rare he ddn't think I had it. I should of pursued it but totally believed in the medical profession, I did... -

ARCHIVED Newbie To This Site
Rikki Tikki replied to toxemicfrog's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Frog: Welcome to the boards. You will find a lot of support and information here. I wanted to add that you need to check your medications to be sure they are gluten free. Also, it took me about three years to really feel well. After the doctor put me on steriods for a chest inflamation it seemed the symptoms of celiac slowed way down. I noticed... -

ARCHIVED Had Bloodwork Done.....
Rikki Tikki replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Refractory sprue is basically celiac sprue that does not respond to the elimination of gluten in your diet. It's kind of like you never heal from the celiac regardless of the fact that you are gluten free. Hope that makes sense. -
ARCHIVED Waiting For Celiac Disease Blood Test Results
Rikki Tikki replied to Connielynn38's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Connie: I just wanted to tell you that I know how totally frustrating this can be and overwhelming. I can say now about 3 years after diagnosis that I am finally feeling better. It will happen for you too. I would have your daughter tested. I just found out my mom has it and one daughter has tested positive but refuses to follow the diet. She's bigger... -
ARCHIVED Had Bloodwork Done.....
Rikki Tikki replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Karen: Are you feeling any better. I was just reading that a large percentage of epople with celiac do not respond well to the diet. I know my body is just now getting better after being diagnosed about 3 years ago. I have read you on here for quite some time so I know you have had quite a struggle. Keep up the good work and I will keep you in my prayers... -
ARCHIVED Digestive Advantage
Rikki Tikki replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Kathy: What is it supposed to do? I was reading about a pill they are developing that is supposed to make us able to eat regular food. But I imagine it will be by prescription and I would be kind of afraid to try it. I am more worried about the long term effects to our bodies. -
ARCHIVED If You Could Eat Whatever You Wanted And
Rikki Tikki replied to rmmadden's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There would be so many things. I would start out with a big fat dount, then move on to fish and chips with french bread, fried chicken, pasta, pizza and a hamburger, those would just be my entrees, then I would eat stuffed pork chops with coated french fries and top that off with oreo's, choclate cake and cheescake! dream on I guess. -
