Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

  1. Hi, I was diagnosed through bloodwork. Scored a 40, though the range is 0-19, so, somehow they determined that I had a 99% chance of having celiac disease. I got the test b/c 1) my mother had been diagnosed 3 years earlier with a positive biopsy and 2) my symptoms were beginning to get bad - I noticed them about 2 yrs prior to testing, I think they flared...
  2. Sounds great. I emailed that person mentioned early as leading the Cobb Co. group, so hopefully I will hear back. What time is the meeting? Again, I appreciate the info.
  3. Is she really wanting a fig newton or would a breakfast bar do? Glutino (sp?) makes great gluten-free breakfast bars, and I would recommend the blueberry in particular (though they also have apple and chocolate). I found these at Whole Foods, but you could try finding them online. Hope this helps.
  4. Just found this thread. I am in Marietta, soon to be in Midtown, so this support group would be perfect for me. Thanks for the info!!
  5. I hate doctors.......enough said. All a bunch of idiots. I come from a biological science background and understand how difficult it is - too many variables. Forget the "It isn't rocket science" saying and replace that with biological science. People are not the same - everyone's body is different as well as their environment. For doctors to make gross...
  6. Check out a couple of the other discussions - some people have mentioned losing weight. I have lost about 5lbs and was already a "normal" weight......Maybe it is just the limitations of food and the fact that you may be eating less carbs.
  7. Thanks again for all of the replies. The information is helpful. Just wish I knew the best way to deal with and help this person in my family. All is made even more difficult by the fact that I am out of state.
  8. Can you describe this pain some more? I have never heard of either condition, but, recently, I noticed once in a while it hurts to take deep breaths. The pain will last for a few days and go away. I had a doctor listen to my chest and heart and they found nothing wrong and suggested just that - an inflammation in my chest wall (not sure what they were...
  9. I haven't yet seen much improvement in mine. I have been gluten-free since November, with several mistakes since (even one just about two weeks ago), and these mistakes may be why.....I really don't know. I wish you and your child the best and hope your little girl starts to see improvements soon.
  10. I have had that problem, and with all my recent glutenings and apparent corn allergy, I am still suffering. Maybe there is hope out there for me if things have changed for you.......
  11. I live out of state, away from this person, so I have always wondered what she does when she claims to she him or what others may do if she thinks she sees/hears him in public - how does she act? She also refuses to speak to someone as she is entirely convinced that the whole thing is real. I don't know what to do.....pretend along with her or tell her...
  12. The only thing that I'm wondering about now is that we bought the steaks at a Wal-mart supercenter and I noticed someone here mentioned that they do something funky with their meat. Would this be true with steaks?? Ugh. I really hate the thought of worrying about steaks too! Hi, I am the one who reacted to Walmart steaks. I bought a steak, ate it...
  13. Honesty and family....suprising they dont' mix b/c these are the people that you are supposed to be closest too, right? I appreciate all of the thoughtful replies. I wish there was more I could do for this family member. What is interesting is that her issues on being followed by this imaginary person fluctuate. I can go months without hearing about...
  14. I have plenty of family memebers that should be tested, but don't consider themselves as candidates or are in denial b/c they fear the change in their eating habits. It really gets to me at times, but I guess that is what family members are supposed to do - get to you
  15. I have psoriasis on my knees, elbows, and toe nails.....when it gets on the nails, its gross, kind of looks like fungus, but I had a clipping sent off to a lab 2x to be sure. The itchness will flare up once in a while, but most of the time it just looks like paler, slightly bumpy spots on my elbows and knees. Almost forgot, I get it on my scalp too, and...
  16. Thanks for the info, everyone. I have to be careful what I say b/c family members of mine may be joining the forum shortly (been talking it up b/c I enjoy it, but that may have been a mistake where family is concerned). Anyway, the other person with celiac disease in my family is paranoid and believes she is being followed by this person that doesn't exist...

    ARCHIVED Skin Care

Do what works for you, but I agree...I throw out things with gluten in them. Just not worth it for me after I found my shampoo was giving me headaches (not sure how it got in my system, thought I was being careful). I know Proactiv's products are gluten-free (you might want to check their makeup). Someone recently posted a list under another topic of Estee...
  18. If you ever want to go off on the medical community - I am a great person to talk to. I could go on for hours about the ignorance in general and how most people don't believe that food can affect others so drastically. Let me tell you, if a doctor has said it, I've heard it. And I have never heard of spanish heritage having a prevalence of celiac disease...
  19. I have to admit - I am a bit upset with my husband at times. He has started getting used to the limits on kissing (after 7+ months), but sometimes I think that if he went gluten-free, this problem and others could be avoided - such as contamination through using the same pots/pans if they weren't washed properly, whatever. And he isn't always 100% supportive...
  20. Does anyone have a celiac in their family with mental illness? I have read that schizophrenia may be associated. Anyone experienced this? Curious b.c we may be dealing with this situation in our family..... Thanks for any insight.
  21. Not sure about marshmellows, but I know that all m and m's are gluten-free except for the kind with the rice krispies in them (forgot the specific name of that variety).
  22. I went to a work dinner with my husband and had called the caterer beforehand to check on the food (they said it was ok, but got sick anyway, so much for work-related dinners). When they brought dessert out, the server brought me a fruit plate (no cake for me, obviously). This woman at the table, in a loud/obnoxious voice said that she wanted pineapple...
  23. I have celiac and so does my mother (her diagnosis via biopsy spurred my desire to get tested). The two of us are a normal weight. However, most studies show that having only one blood relative (first order - parent or full sib), you have a 4-10% chance of developing celiac disease.....not very high to me. I have always wondered if my dad's side has it...
  24. So, do allergists deal with IgG intolerances at all (meaning, do they test for these)? And for an IgG test, I am assuming that I would still need to be eating the bothersome food(s)? - Think they would need to wheel me in on a bed if I ate milk or eggs prior to going in........I get so sick, I can hardly stand. I wish there were a few tests out there that...
  25. Sorry you to hear that Nioxin helped and you have to (or plan to) give it up. I think it has helped people b/c it contains something that breaks done a hormone found on the scalp that causes hair loss....sorry I don't know much more than that, but maybe doctors can offer you a topical solution of this agent??? Also, I think Nioxin is vitamin fortified as...
